The Clock Crunch

Which Muscles? This simple routine will effectively work your Core Muscles (Abdomen, Back & Glutes) which will boost your sports performance.

How To? Just follow these simple steps:-

i/ Sit upright in the centre of the ball (see photo 1).

ii/ Keep your knees at right angle & plant your feet firmly to the ground.

iii/ Stretch both arms fully above head with palms press lightly together.

iv/ Lean back slightly until you feel your abs tightened.

v/ Move your arms and upper body in one piece around in clockwise motion like the hands on a clock (see photo 2).

image

vi/ Exhale evenly as you go one round & back to the start position.

vii/ As you bring your hands and upper body around and forward, engage fully your core muscles for stability. Half way, your hands should be pointing down in front, as you lean forward from the waist.

viii/ Keep your movements continuous and smooth throughout. Always engage your abs from start to finish.

image

ix/ Complete 5-10 repetitions per set, and aim for 3 sets.

x/ It may take you a couple of tries to find your balance and to master the technique.

xi/ The Clock Crunch will fire-up both your core and stabilising muscles in no time.

Remember, Later Means Never!

Until the next time, work hard and play harder 🙂

Exclusive Behind The Scenes Sneak Preview Of Warrior Trail 2016

IMG_20160127_105909Exclusive Behind The Scenes Sneak Preview Of Warrior Trail 2016

Mind Over Matter

We all like to think that we are the Masters Of Our Universe, but in reality, our inherent human failings can let us down if we keep making the wrong choices in life. A wise man once said, “Life is Simple, but People make Life Complicated”. How true! Nevertheless, what determines success is not what we say, but invariably, we are judged by what we DO. In particular, how we handle the  challenges that we face on a daily basis, big or small, is a good judge of our strength of character. Furthermore, if we are to believe in Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution, we would know that in the Animal Kingdom, it is the strong which will outlive the weak. Fortunately, for Human Sapiens, we can survive and thrive because the strongest among us will protect the weaklings, and even the weaklings can be triumph over Life’s adversaries by using their brain power to make-up for their physical limitations. So, Life can be harsh, but it is always fair.

IMG_20160127_113812Brains And Brawn

I like Obstacle Races such as the Warrior Trail, which will be held for the very first time in Malaysia at Eco Venture Resort Semenyih on 30-31/January 2016, because these races challenges us both mentally, as well as physically. After having experienced Viper Challenge, Spartan Race and Commando Elite Challenge, I can confidently say that brute strength alone will not be enough to overcome these type of tough challenges. The participants will need to work smart in order to figure out the best way to complete the myriad of different obstacles without falling-over face-first into the many mud pits. Moreover, there will be a few challenges whereby the participant’s ability to work well as a team will be the difference between failure and success.

IMG_20160127_113935What Is Your Motivation To Succeed

Apart from the attributes of Strength and Courage, I find that having the right motivation helps me greatly in powering through the obstacle course. My source of motivation varies widely depending on my current mood and the types of challenges. For this coming Warrior Trail, my motivation will be those people who would like to see nothing better than watch another human being fail or fall, but up front, they pretend to be sincere and concerned about others well-being. Normally, my motivation is more positive in nature, but this weekend, I will be battling each obstacle as though I am kicking the asses of those two-faced assassins.. I will let you know afterwards through my blog if my experiment works or not. In the end, there is no right or wrong motivation, as long as you find something that you feel strongly enough to spur you on when the going gets tough.

IMG_20160127_120126Meet Mr. Nick James

This week, I was fortunate enough to meet-up with the founder of Warrior Trail, Mr, Nick James who started the Warrior Trail series in Cheng Mai, Thailand in January 2015. Nick is a Welshman who works as a full-time Athletic Director in Cheng Rai, Northern Thailand. He has been hooked on Obstacle Races ever since, he successfully completing Tough Guys challenge in 2000. It was a life-changing event for Nick because the training for Tough Guys made him the fittest he had ever felt in his whole life. However, soon after, Nick was tragically diagnosed with cancer, and he had to undergo 6-months of chemotherapy. Looking back on those dark days. Nick confided, “Funnily, having completed Tough Guys, it gave me the belief to battle this disease and to fight for my life”.

Fast forward to today, Nick and his crew were busy setting-up the course for Malaysia’s first-ever Warrior Trail 2016. Despite Nick’s hectic schedule, I felt privileged that he took time off his busy schedule to show and explain to me the concept and intricacies of what makes Warrior Trail popular from the get go. As he pointed-out, we are the first true trail-based obstacle race around which means that he will make full use of the natural settings and obstacles that is available in this resort and its surrounding areas, in addition to the 20-over custom-made obstacles set-up throughout the 10km route. Nick is adamant in making his muddy event tough enough so that the participants will have fun, and at the same time, there is the feel-good factor of being able to survive such a grueling challenge.

IMG_20160127_114231Pushed To The Limits

As Nick walked me through the beginning of the course, I noticed that there was a river crossing challenge about 1km from the start line, and I said, “It looks like the contestants will get wet early on”. Nick replied half-jokingly, “Yes, we like to give hard challenges right away.” Looking at the other early obstacles, I was resigned to the hard fact that we were all going to get very wet and muddy early on in the race tomorrow. This course was designed by Nick to force the challengers out of their comfort zone and make them feel dirty, tired, battered and bruised. Why do people pay to torture themselves like this, I began to wonder. Could it be that our natural survival instincts force us to explore the boundaries of possibilities in search of enlightenment and inner wellbeing? Or are we just looking for an excuse to release our stress by jumping into a pool of mud? Sometimes, like now, I never know in the beginning exactly why I want to compete in certain races. However, from experience, I have learnt not to question my instincts and go with the flow. So, following my gut-feelings again this time, I believe that the Warrior Trail will provide me the answers to the questions about which I do not yet know. Stay tuned and find-out all about my Warrior Trail experience soon.

Running Combination Of Good Cop, Bad Cop

Running Combination Of Good Cop, Bad Cop

Topic: Running Clinic No.4 – Malaysia Women Marathon 2016

MBPJ Stadium at Kelana Jaya

On 9th January, MWM held their fourth clinic on speed training under the watchful eye of Race Director, Karen Loh, and lead by Running Coaches Darren and Karsten with the assistance of Most Wanted Pacers. In all 30 over runners were literally put through their hot paces.

“After each run, you should be bent-over forward with your hands on your knees and gasping for air,” shouted drill-sergeant Darren who was playing the “bad cop” opposite the soft-spoken German Karsten who was playing the “good cop”.

The group consisted of mostly women who were aiming to improve their running times and speed, and some will be running their full marathon and half marathon at MWM 2016 on 6th March.

The participants were divided-into several groups of varying pace, and the groups ran 400m laps 8-times with a two-minute break between each lap.

There were also warm-up and cool-down drills conducted before and after the sessions respectively. Surprisingly, even by 7:30am, the air was already too hot and humid. There were sports drinks made available for the runners. I could not imagine what it would be like come race day with a 6.5 hours cut-off times which means that the slower runners will be grilled if the weather remains dry. Keeping fully hydrated and taking necessary precaution against the sun-rays is a must for all FM runners. Malaysian runners have to be partially insane to run in our tropical heat. On the plus side, the greater the challenge (from extreme heat or cold), the greater will be the satisfaction and the feeling of self-accomplishment afterwards.

See the participants sweating it out at my photo Album!

The next running clinic will be a Fartlek session which will not be held at IKEA, but it is planned to be at the same MBPJ Stadium, Kelana Jaya on 31st January 2016. After that the last and 6th running clinic will cover Time Trials, and it will give the participants an indication of how they have progressed since the first time trial conducted at the first running clinic. Please visit the MWM FB page for the latest information on the MWM running clinics and other planned activities.

Ladies, if you have not yet registered, there is good news because the early bird rates have been extended to 31st January 2016. Hope on to Malaysia Women Marathon official website to register and for more event details.

Running Couple’s Epic Weekend of 5th & 6th December 2015

12304263_1127302900622168_1938956455482997365_oRunning Couple’s Epic Weekend of 5th & 6th December 2015

Running Night And Day

Given a choice, most runners that I know would prefer to run in the morning rather than in the evening for the following reasons:-

  1. An exhilarating morning run is a great way to jumpstart your metabolism and keep you alert all day.
  2. The peace and  tranquility of an early run gives you an opportunity to plan-out how to make full use of the day ahead.
  3. There is nothing more inspiring than watching the first ray of sunlight at daybreak in order to remind us just how lucky we are to be alive.

On the other hand, some runners like running at night because their skins are sensitive to the sun, or because their free-time for running is only available in the evenings.

Personally, I love to run anytime, and recently, I had the rare opportunity to partake in two separate running events which respectively highlighted the best of day and night running together with my wife, Maryati.

12322820_10206312653028583_7315855658637210555_oBack-To-Back 10km Run Challenge

Maryati and I boldly accepted the invitations to join 3 separate events over one weekend. The plan for us was to run 10km in the ICE Watch Light Up The Night Run in Shah Alam on a Saturday night, and 12 hours later, we would run another 10km on that following Sunday morning at the Amnig Warrior Run in One City, USJ. Our last event on Sunday afternoon was called “Slide The City”, and its drawcard was a 1,ooo ft water slide staged at Precinct 7 in Putrajaya. On paper, Maryati and I were looking forward to this weekend, but in practice, we wondered if we could physically and logistically pull-off this triple feat. I guess, there is a first time for everything, right?!

12238357_1127305347288590_9078667770803079437_o-2Saturday Night Runners

The inaugural Light Up The Night Run 2015 was organised by The Marathon Company and their Title Sponsor was the trendy ICE Watch retailer who is owned by the famous high-street Habib Jewelry. On event night, 3,000 participants gathered at the start/finish point of the Plaza Shah Alam parking lot, turning it into a carnival-like atmosphere with music blaring and runners socialising before the race. The advantage of having this event at a shopping mall was that we did not have to go far for food and drinks after the run. Although, we started our night run, sharp at 8pm from the centre of Shah Alam town, most of the route took us along the quieter and well-lit housing areas. There were safety road marshals stationed at each intersection to direct road traffic and to ensure that the runners followed the right course. The night was very humid, and the sweaty runners could quench their thirst at two water stations along the way. Since this was a fun run, we were given a generous 3 hours to complete 10km. Maryati and I finished in the middle of the pack, and when we crossed the finish line, we were dripping with sweat from head-to-toe. Although, the shopping mall operating hours were extended to midnight, right after we gobbled down some energy-replenishing bananas, we did not hang around there long because we had to head home immediately for an early night in preparation for our next 10km.

12108030_1737892899778189_2222261854606671521_n.jpgSunday Morning Warriors

After a good night’s rest and having drank lots of water, we woke-up feeling surprisingly fresh and eager to face our next 10km run. The Warrior Run is in its second year, and it is sponsored by Amnig, a local manufacturer and online retailer of sportswear. Like last night’s run, it was held at a shopping mall, One City in USJ. There were ample parking space available, and I was glad that there was a warm-up exercise routine conducted before the run, so that I could shake-off any muscle stiffness and soreness from the previous night. 12309925_10153400986208822_35033716790132417_oAt 7:30am, a total of 900 runners were flagged for the 10km and 5km categories respectively. Being a Sunday morning, there were hardly any vehicles on the roads, and the morning coolness and clear sky made us feel very comfortable. Furthermore, the roads were wide and there were hardly any hills to trouble us. At the finish area, each runner was given the customary medal, bananas, buns and isotonic drinks. Since the shopping mall was not yet opened, there were lots of space for us to put our feet up, unwind and enjoy our snacks.

HERE are  more AMNIG Warrior Run 2015 photos.

IMG_20151206_171530Two Down And One To Go

Having ran 20km in two days, I was expecting to feel some tiredness. However, on the contrary, Maryati and I were feeling rejuvenated and overjoyed. Could it be that we had underestimated our level of fitness? Perhaps, our tiredness had numbed the pain? As it turned-out, not over-exerting ourselves during each run, as well as saving enough energy until the end of our tasks proved to be the right decision. After all, we were not competing to beat other runners, but instead, our main goal was to complete the two runs as a running couple. Indeed, it was a real privilege for us to be part of two such well-organised and enjoyable running events, on any given day or night.

Slip And Slide

To cap-off an eventful weekend, our last activity was to water-slide down 1,000 feet at the inaugural “Slide The City” in Putrajaya which was hosted by my dynamic friend Delon. Delon is the founder and CEO of Monkey Theory who acquired the rights to stage Slide The City events in South East Asia. I was taken aback when I heard that 10,000 people had bought tickets to his two-day event. How exciting can sliding down a waterslide be for grown-ups like me? I was soon able to find-out the answer for myself.

IMG_20151206_164315At the registration booth, we were given a wrist tag, an inflatable donut-shaped tube, a water pistol and an event T-shirt. After we changed to our swimming costumes, and reloaded our water pistols, we queued-up for the slide of our lives. I noticed that there were many different kinds of inflatable tubes, and it was funny to see people carrying brightly-coloured inflatable crocodiles, lobsters and even an inflatable slice of pizza! We had a choice to slide solo or in a group. We opted for the former. When it was our turn, the volunteers explained, “You must run first, and then jump on to your inflatable tube.” That was easier said than done, because a couple of sliders would funnily bounce-off their tubes. It took some coordination and balance to get jump on your moving tube without falling over. Once, we were on our tubes, the slide was a fast and hair-raising ride as we laughed and screamed, spun and reached the pool at the bottom with a splash-down. After our first slide, Maryati & I concluded that this had to be one of the most fun things that we have done together, and we spend the next few hours sliding down as many times as we could, We experimented with different sliding techniques – sometime, we would sit on our tubes, and sometimes we would lay face-down and slide down. The easiest way was to hang tight to our dear lives and let gravity do the work. Looking at all the happy faces slipping and sliding, I can say that everyone was having a whale of a time. The Emcee, the speaker music and the food trucks helped create a water carnival atmosphere where everyone seemed so relaxed and happy. Also, it gave adults like me a rare chance to be a kid again without feeling guilty or judged. This was the perfect ending to our mad-cap weekend. And as we called it a day, I secretly wished to myself, “I wish every weekend could be like this!”

HERE are more Slide The City Photos.

Acknowledgements

Our sincere appreciation goes to the teams of The Marathon Company, AMNIG and Monkey Theory for their invitations, and for putting-on 3 splendid fun-filled events which leave us participants wanting more….see you again in 2016 hopefully!

Runner’s Choice

image-5Runner’s Choice

Run For Health

Running is one of the most effective ways to promote fitness and unity among our community at large because it is accessible to most people and it requires hardly any expenditure. In fact, perhaps due to the Public’s rising health concerns, more individuals and families are taking-up running as their preferred form of outdoor exercise. Consequently, Event Management companies are taking advantage of this unprecedented surge in the popularity of running to organise more running events for the public every weekend. In turn, thousands of runners are willing to fork-out RM30 to RM120 to run in one of these events in exchange for an event T-shirt, a medal and a goodie bag which has been paid for by the Event Sponsors.

Joy And Pain

When an event is organised extremely well, the runners will feel that their money has been well-spent and the personal satisfaction of completing a 10km Run or a 42km Full Marathon is practically priceless.

However, in reality, there is no such thing as the perfect running event, and there will invariably be a few unpleasant incidents caused by the runners and/or the organisers which can spoil the event for the rest of us. Let us take a look at some of the typical cases of Runners and Event Organisers behaving badly (refer to “8 Good Running Habits” and “8 Running Event Fails”, on purpose or not, in the hope that increasing the awareness of these problems can lead to finding sustainable solutions, and ultimately, make everyone’s running experience even more enjoyable.

IMG_20160109_075707Runners Role-Model

Runners play a significant role in determining whether an event is successful or not. Here are some of the ways a runner can contribute positively to any event:-

8 Good Running Habits

  1. Before registering for any event, be sure to conduct a thorough background check on the event organiser and read fully the terms and conditions of the event. For easy reference, I have listed below my recommended selection criteria, entitled “Guide To Running Smart”, which guide you to avoid registering for forgetful and lame duck events.
  2. Get a your doctor’s approval before taking part in a run, especially for new runners and runners with a medical condition.
  3. Be prepared and train adequately before taking-up any running challenges.
  4. Be considerate and courteous to other runners. Do not push and shove other runners. Do not spit while running with other runners nearby. Do not curse other runners or race volunteers. If you have to stop or walk, veer to the left of the road first.
  5. Read and follow the race DOs and DON’Ts carefully. If you have any doubt, seek clarification from the organisers.
  6. Be fair to the race organiser. If you have a problem regarding the event, do not cry and shout about it online without first seeking proper clarification. Explain to the race organiser clearly what is your problem or the nature of your complaint. Organisers are more likely to assist you if you speak to them patiently and in a calm manner. Then, try and resolve the issue amicably between the two of you before seeking any 3rd Party arbitration. Most of the time, your problem is only a small oversight or misunderstanding which can be resolved quickly without much fuss.
  7. Customer feedback is important to event companies because it can significantly help them to improve their products and services in the future. Therefore, as a customer, you should send a short note to the event organiser afterwards explaining what you like and dislike about their events.
  8. Leave no one behind. If you see another runner in obvious physical pain, ask them, “Can I help you?” or “Can I get you help?”. It is best for the whole running community when runners look-out for one another during a run, and as the saying goes – “If you want to run fast, run alone, but if you want to run far, run as a team”.

IMG_20160110_0751298 Running Event Fails

Every year, there will invariably be some running events which will leave the participants feeling cheated afterwards for the following organisation failures:-

  1. The event organiser has suddenly closed shop and absconded with the registration fees without any notice and without a trace.
  2. The event organiser has canceled the event without any refund or any form of compensation to the registrants.
  3. The event organiser has changed the event date and/or venue for valid or invalid reasons.
  4. The event organiser has clearly neglected the safety of the runners and that of the general public.
  5. Poor management of event and poor communication skills which lead to discomfort, inconvenience, confusion and very long waiting queues for the participants.
  6. Organisers have over-promised and under-delivered. It is common business practice for event organisers to hype-up their events to attract people to register for their events. It is wrong, however, for any company to mislead their customers by making unconfirmed promises which they clearly have not fulfilled come event day.
  7. Organisers  are more concerned about the QUANTITY of total runners than the QUALITY of the event for the runners. It does appear that many new event organisers are more concerned about organising bigger events for bigger profits at the expense of improving the quality of their events for the runners. A viable event company knows how to balance the needs of the company to make profit with the needs and expectations of the runners.
  8. There is an obvious tendency for new event management companies to jump on the running craze bandwagon to make an easy buck. This is not a problem as long as event companies can meet the minimum safety and quality standards expected by the paying runners. However, I do have a problem when companies who call their events a “Run” when obviously most of the participants will be walking rather than running. Rather than make a mockery of running and genuine runners, I wish these concept events would replace the word “Run” with a more accurate description such as “Parade”, “Catwalk” or even “Selfiethon”. Unfortunately, in Malaysia, some people still call a 10km run, a marathon!

image-45Be A Smart Runner

With the rising cost of living, it is even more important today that runners select the right events which will give them the best value for their hard-earned dollar. Based on my many years participating in hundreds of running events, I have compiled a simple guideline to help you choose running events that are worthy of your time and money.. Please note that selecting the right event is not a perfect science and personal preference does play a key part in how each of us determine whether we like an event or not. Nevertheless, my 12 simple tips below will, hopefully, point you in the right direction:-

12 DOs Before Registering For Any Race

  1. KNOW YOUR ORGANISER – Do they have a good track record or are they a fly-by-night company?
  2. AVOID ORGANISERS who provide very sketchy race information. A good race organiser will provide a detailed description of their event offerings.
  3. STAY CLEAR of events which are promoted exclusively online without any legitimate operating address.
  4. IF IT’S TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, THEN ACT WITH EXTREME CAUTION. The costs and procedures of organising a public run are pretty standard. So, if the event owner offers an unbelievable deal, then practice due diligence.
  5. CON IS FOR CONFIDENCE. Sometimes, the crook is clever to gain runners confidence and trust, before disappearing with your money. Be more wary of any new players in town.
  6. CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME. Many events claim that “part of the proceeds will be donated to a worthwhile charity”. Call the donation recipient directly and find-out exactly how much and how will the donations be handled once collected.
  7. BACKGROUND CHECKS. Use the internet or get advice from regular runners if you have any doubts about any organiser or event BEFORE you register for it.
  8. EASY TO CONTACT. Deal with organisers who are easy to contact and who are helpful and transparent.
  9. CHECK EVENT TERMS and CONDITIONS. Always check your rights before making any complaint, and make sure that you have legal grounds before pursuing any serious complaints. Seek legal advice from a lawyer friend if possible.
  10. PROPER CHANNEL. If you have been conned, take all your evidences and lodge your complaints to the right authorities dealing with Consumer Rights which normally falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry Of Domestic Trade.
  11. DO NOT ALLOW your passion for running cloud your sensible judgement and THINK before you register for any event. Do not succumb to the irresistible allure of a cool event T-shirt and a shiny Medal. Rather, ask the organisers in detail how they plan to manage the event and how do they intend to deliver on their stipulated promises. A good event organiser will have a detailed organisation plan in place well in advance.
  12. DON’T RUSH INTO A DECISION. I have seen running mates blindly register for events as soon as the ticket doors are open because they get carried-away by the commercial hype surrounding certain events and because of the peer pressure from their running buddies. Be a smart shopper, and take a step back and ask yourself first, why do you want to participate in that particular run because no one else can run in your shoes. In short, when you use your head rather than your heart to decide on which races to join, you will increase your chances of picking the right one. If you are unsure, then look for other races, and remember that you are the customer in the driving seat, and it is up to the organiser to prove to you that their event is worthy of your selection. Ironically, whenever I miss-out to register for certain events, I usually find a better one comes along immediately, trust me.

IMG_20160110_084903Run With Integrity

The standard of our running events are relatively low compared to overseas countries because we are relatively new at it. However, given the fast-growing market for local running events, it is important for Malaysian event organisers to start on the right foot, and concentrate their efforts on staging a few quality events rather than offering many half-measured events. Indeed, to raise the quality of running events in Malaysia, everyone involved in the running community – the runners, the running groups, the sponsors, the vendors, the volunteers, the authorities, and the community – must play their part in order to safeguard Our Running Future from over-commercialisation, and always keep the romanticism and free-spirit of running alive.

KL New Year Run 2016

image-35KL New Year Run 2016

We Love KL

The majestic Dataran Merdeka will always hold a special place  in the hearts of all Malaysians.  Its historical significance and central location make it the most sought-after event venue in Kuala Lumpur. As a runner, I felt proud and significant that the Federal Ministry and DBKL, had picked to organise a running event at these hallowed grounds on 1st January 2016. Even the Federal Minister, Dato’ Seri Adnan woke-up early to welcome all the participants, Malaysians and non-Malaysians, to the very first KL New Year Run 2016 (KLNYR 2016) event which would take Runners along a 10km & 5km scenic of KL city centre. The slight drizzle did not bother us one bit because we were there to celebrate our twin love for Kuala Lumpur, and Running.

image-27Join Team Ultron

I was lucky enough to be selected as a Team Ultron Ambassador by the official apparel supplier, Ultron, together with 19 other runners. On New Year, we were given, to wear during the run, a customised bright yellow Ultron running Tee with a new slogan, “Every WINNER Was Once A Beginner”, printed boldly in the front. My understanding of the new slogan meanings are:-

1) Beginners should not be intimidated or embarrassed by their lack of running skills and experience because we all started the same way.

2) Runners should support one another.

3) Running is equal for all.

As the newly elected Team Ultron Ambassadors gathered for a short briefing by Ultron Captain, Sarjit, he declared enthusiastically, “You guys are lucky because today, you will be the first batch to be given Ultron’s newly designed 2016 ambassador running Tees with better quality material”. Starting from April 2015, Ultron has appointed more than 350 running ambassadors to run in over 20 running events year-to-date. Good news for those who missed-out earlier is that will continue to sponsor  NEW running ambassadors in 2016 through announcements on Ultron FB page.

image-25Add MORE Oil

To properly usher in this New Year Day, I decided to ride my ElliptiGO bicycle from Subang Jaya to the race venue, and thus, make it my first Ride (34km) & Run (10km) for 2016. Cycling to and from the KL race venue makes for great warm- up and cool-down sessions, and moreover, I can park my ElliptiGO right next to the Start Line like some bigshot – how cool is that!

image-29Exciting Kick-Start

Everyone seems to be more cheerful and more hopeful on New Year’s Day 2016 because when the clock struck Midnight, we can erase all our problems of the last 12 months. Thereafter, with a clean slate, we are resolved to do better in the New Year. Such renewed hopes give us a greater sense of purpose to start planning ahead. The inaugural KL New Year Run 2016 was a unique opportunity to give its participants a positive ‘running start’ to 2016.  Indeed, the collective spirits among the 2,000 crowd were elevated, in anticipation of an exciting year ahead.

As soon as the tower clock struck 7:30am, the eager 10km runners made their way along Jalan Raja Laut, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan Ampang and finally, to the familiar home stretch of Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. Being the first outing of the year, I was happy to run at a slow pace while engaging in idle chit-chat with fellow runners, and at other times, it felt like I was just floating above the streets, lost in my carefree thoughts.

As the finish line drew near, I kicked-up my heels and bombed to the finish line in order to successfully complete my first run of 2016 as a Team Ultron Ambassador. As in the case of many addicted runners, the sense of satisfaction of getting out of bed in the wee hours of the morning and jump-starting the day with a run never fails to lift my spirits and give me that extra boost of energy.

image-34Future Running Tradition

To mark this special occasion, all finishers were rewarded with an attractive medal, sling bag containing drinks and snacks, and a finisher certificate.  Then, everyone gathered in front of the stage for presentation of winners hampers and lucky draw prizes. Since it was a Friday Public Holiday, everyone was feeling particularly chirpy, and I wondered if KL New Year Run will return in 2017 because I could easily make this event my annual New Year Day Run. Well, it is probably too soon to make such commitments, but nevertheless, it is an option worth having for boring runners like me who typically spends every New Year Eve sitting quietly at home.

Special Shout-Out

A Big Thank You to Federal Ministry, DBKL, Traffic Police, Ultron, the Organising Crew & Volunteers for successfully hosting such a memorable event. I hope KL New Year Run return again so that even more runners can experience the Double Joy of Running peacefully on New Year’s Day in the Heart of KL.

Warrior Trail 2016 – New Event !!

image-24Warrior Trail 2016 – New Event !!

The First Of Its Kind

Joining any new running event never fails to give me an extra adrenalin rush because there is the excitement of being the first to do something that no one has actually done before in modern history. It takes a certain degree of courage on the part of any Race Director to introduce new and untested events because it is like sailing through uncharted waters without a life boat. Equally brave are the participants who register for first-time events because they have, essentially, offered themselves to be the guinea pigs in an experiment.  In the end, without the pioneering spirit of organisers and participants alike, the running scenario would not have so many different and thrilling new races as it does today. Personally, I go out of my way in search of new kinds of challenges, and recently, I was fortunate enough to be invited to join the inaugural Warrior Trail 2016 which is a 10km race or fun run (95% off-road) with 25 custom-built man-made obstacles and a few natural obstacles set in the beautiful surroundings of Semenyih Ecoventure Resort to be held on 30th January & 31st January 2016. As the Warrior Trail website promises, “You can expect to run along quality, hard packed trails, cross streams and lakes and even negotiate a 500m jungle river section”. In fact, I found their website to be very user-friendly and it gives a detailed description of all the main features of the race, the obstacles, the terrain, the venue location and facilities, etc. Nevertheless, my preparation for any obstacle challenge is quite simple – expect the unexpected! I predict that this kind of off-road obstacle challenges will be a great test of human strength and endurance, and there is still enough room for some wild and wet fun-times too!

Interview With Warrior Trail 2016 Race Organiser

Recently, I caught-up with Warrior Trail 2016 co-organiser, the bubbly Idayu Hamid, and I just had to question her about the upcoming Warrior Trail 2016 debut:-

  1. What is the objective of this event?
    A. The objective of the race is to bring a fun, but genuinely challenging obstacle course to Malaysia. We want the course itself to be an adventure and have chosen interesting and varied locations. We’ve designed the course and created a wave system to drastically reduce queuing on the course.
  2. Who & Why should people register?
    A. Anyone and everyone! Our previous races have featured runners from 12 to 70-year old. Come and try something different. Whilst we have many standard obstacle course elements such as walls and crawls, we’ve got new original obstacles to test your strength and agility.
  3. What are the Runners Entitlement which are included in the fees.
    A. Drifting finishers t, high quality medal, drawstring bag, vouchers.
  4. How many participants are you targeting?
    A. Up to 3000
  5. Do you have info, contact or special rates at lodgings nearby venue?
    A. Yes, see accommodation page on www.warriortrail.my
  6. Will there be food stalls & shower facilities available after finish line?
    A. Yes and yes. Be sure to bring some spare cash, towel and soap.

Commando Elite Challenge Urban Warfare (CECUW) 2015

11049449_1130769376942187_4192232493830172525_o-2Commando Elite Challenge Urban Warfare (CECUW) 2015

Military Training For Civilians

Obstacle Racing or Obstacle Challenge Events are becoming increasingly popular in Malaysia partly because gym-goers, fitness freaks, athletes, as well as the weekend warriors are looking for newer events which can test and challenge their overall physical strength. The other main reason why obstacle challenges are “hot ticket” items is that it is actually a lot of fun rolling around in mud, climbing walls and swinging across the monkey bars with your buddies.

A typical obstacle challenge is based on the hardcore Army Commando obstacle course which is part of the military training for recruits and soldiers in order to test their speed, agility and physical strength. To instil a spirit of teamwork and good camaraderie, in the civilian version, participants are encouraged to help-out each other to overcome certain challenges such as scaling the 8 feet wall and climbing in and out of the slippery mud pits.In fact, one of the highly endearing characteristic of obstacle running is to witness strangers helping each other complete the course, and no matter who you may be, a doctor, a lawyer, a housewife or from any walk of life, the course treats everyone equally and without prejudice.

Solo Night Mission

Lucky for me, I was invited by the CECUW 2015 race owner & organiser, NM Galaxy, to participate in the second edition of Commando Elite Challenge (CEC) on 12th December 2015 at Bukit Expo in UPM Serdang. The first CEC was held in January 2015 on a different obstacle course, and a total of 850 “recruits” had taken-up that challenge. This time round, 387 participants volunteered for the Night Mission on Saturday, and a further 611 participants took-up the Day Mission on the following Sunday.

Like a “real hero”, I chose the night mission because I wanted to experience how different it would be to navigate the 14 obstacle challenges in total darkness, and only relying on the beam of light from my headlamp to steer through the course. As the Emcee was briefing us on the race guidelines, it started drizzling which would add an extra challenge for the participants and the race crew to overcome. However, the wet weather did not dampen our collective high spirits because we all were expecting to get wet and dirty in any case.

Do It For Your Country

Right before flag-off, we stood at the start line singing “Negara Ku”, and it gave us all a rousing sense of pride and patriotism, and I wondered how it would be like to be a soldier being sent to a faraway foreign land to fight and die for my country. Thinking about the huge sacrifices that our Military Commandos make everyday to protect our Citizens and keep our Country safe had inspired me to want to do my very best to complete this obstacle challenge no matter how tough the situation. Sure enough, as soon as the horns blared, I ran as fast as I could across the dark and wet 6km course feeling like Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible.

Soldier Of Fortune

The trail surface was a mix of road and off-road, and it was quite even throughout which made for good traction. There were a few uphill climbs but I was determined not to let them slow me down too much. The variety of obstacles significantly tested our overall strength and fitness as we had to wade in chest-high water across a big pond, crawl under barb-wires (not real bard-wires), clamber up and down cargo netting, scale 8 feet walls, climb up a high-tower rope, carry heavy logs and water containers, swing across the monkey bars, jump over obstacles, traverse walls, skip across tyres, flip 200kg tyres, slide down a giant iced-water pit, etc. Anyone who could not successfully complete an obstacle was required to do 10 Burpees as a penalty. It rained harder and we marched on gallantly while covered from head to toe in mud and sweat. “Smile, remember that we paid for this”, I thought as I overtook a muscle-bound warrior near the finish line. One last jump over a campfire and under the finish arch to collect my finisher’s medal. Wait a minute! It is not over yet, because we were given an option to complete one extra Warrior Rest Challenge if we wanted another medal. For this bonus challenge, we had to rest our foreheads against the ground with hands behind our backs and with only our feet touching the ground for 20 seconds. After working so hard for 70 minutes  to get this far, how could I have backed-down now! So, I grit my teeth and summoned all the strength in my neck muscles to complete this final task.

Triumphant Warrior Returns

We took shelter at the covered finishing area where we were given drinks, ice-cream, bananas and buns to replace some of our loss-energy. I was feeling happy because I completed my mission in good time, and I gave it my all, and not-once, along the course, did I take my foot off the pedal even when I was out of breath and wanted to rest quite badly.

On hindsight, if I could do it all again, I would still pick the night over the day mission because the darkness added some sort of element of romanticism, adventure and mysticism to the challenge. As for the rain, I was actually looking for a legitimate excuse to bring-out my inner child and play in the rain again. A Win on both counts.

Victory For NM Galaxy

It takes a colossal effort to build and set-up all the obstacles from scratch, and for putting together a great event whereby the runner’s welfare was well taken care of by their friendly and helpful crew before, during and after the race, I must congratulate Muazan, Ariff, Fatin and all the crew of NM Galaxy for being perfect hosts and making CECUW 2015 such a fun, thrilling and challenging occasion for all the Rambo and Laura Tomb wannabes like me. Special thanks to all the participating sponsors, without which, it would be next to impossible to pull-off a successful Commando Elite Challenge Urban Warfare 2015 :- RHR Hotel (Official  Accommodation), 2XU, Kaz Prosport, Salonpas, Celebrity Fitness, Massimo by The Italian Baker (Official Refreshment), and Running Malaysia Magazine (Official Sports Magazine).

What Is Next?

Do not panic if you missed CEC 2015, because from what I heard, NM Galaxy are already making plans to have the next CEC around April or May 2016. Meantime, I recommend you visit their fresh online sports portal TixTac and stay updated with all the exciting sporting news and views! For event photos, check-out TixTac page.

Until we meet again, it is Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Roger & Out!
