Once Upon A SCKLM 2016

image

Once Upon A SCKLM 2016

Fancy Title

Well, yes, I like to start Standard Chartered Kuala Lumpur 2016 story with such title because SCKLM has always been full of dramas and unexpected twists and turns. As Race Director Rainer likes to remind us, when you have 35,000 Runners, you will invariably have 35,000 opinions on all minute aspects of KL Prima Donna Marathon. Actually, the record participants so far, as of 2014 was 32,000. Last year’s 35,000 does not count because We All DNS!! This year, the target will be a new record of 35,000, and Rainer believes Dataran Merdeka can accommodate upto 40,000 Runners. There will be 1,600 volunteers employed during Race Day, and 500 volunteers will be assigned for REPC. I’d you want to be a volunteer, keep an eye out for announcements at Dirigo Events website around June 2016.

How Was The Date of 7th August 2016 Selected?

According to Rainer, they had to consult all the sponsors & partners, and make sure President Obama will not be visiting Malaysia that weekend. “We got the written blessings of all the parties involved, thankfully!” declared Rainer. The most important factor affecting the success of SCKLM 2016, will not be President Obama nor the Sports Ministry or any other big shots! The SCKLM 2016 will hinge on the mercy of our unpredictable weather patterns. As I write this, we are experiencing an out-of-the-blue heatwave. Nobody including the best weathermen can predict what will happen on 7th August. My tip is to buy insurance against event cancellation as part of the registration option. Unfortunately, after 8 glorious years, MSIG has pulled-out of SCKLM, so I am no longer sure if or how Runners can buy any insurance officially with special discounts. Maybe Dirigo can clear this insurance matter in due time.

Full Runners

By default, the Full Marathoners will always have the best deals because they train the hardest and they run the furthest. So, to make-up for last year’s disappointment, 2015 Full Marathoners will be given the privilege to register for the first 1,000 slots to be opened tomorrow (around midday). There is a total of 7,000 slots for FM, 9,000 for HM, and 5,000 for 10km and 5km distances, etc. If my information is correct, the other 2015 registered Runners will be given first rights to register from 22-March to 19-April. Thereafter, the registration will be opened for the general public. So, you could say that this gradual opening of registration in waves could help prevent system overload.

Before You Register

This year marks a big turning point for the Full Marathon because there will be a check point system situated before and after the DUKE & AKLEH Highway rams to stop Runners who do not meet the prescribed cut-off time, but finish cut-off time has increased to 7 hours. So, my advise for FM newbies is to RESPECT THE DISTANCE. If you have any doubt about meeting those predetermined check point times, then downgrade yourself to 21km or 10km, because there is no worse feeling than being dragged on the sweeper bus after 30km with NOTHING TO SHOW for all you efforts in the end. I did suggest to Dirigo to drop-off the sweeper bus passengers about 1km from the finishing line in order to let the slow Runners experience how it feels to cross the line. Most of the other bloggers argued against such idea because you have earn the medal & Finisher Tee. If I was Race Director, I would give every FM Finishers Medal, as only you know yourself what you had to go through to get to the end. After all, the cost of the Medals have already been paid for. Heck, but I ain’t no expert.

More Kiddies

This year, apart from the 3 month training clinics, there will be 4 new training sessions for the Kids. How cute will that be, watching those little happy running feet in action. Giving children proper professional running guidance, and to expose them to running skills early should be applauded. Despite our Running Bodies who failed to include Full Marathon, 10km & Triathlon in the SEA Games which we are hosting. Atleast, we did not give Inline Skating 12 gold medals as a SEA Games event like what Indonesia did!

More Pasta, MORE RUN

Another exciting NEW FEATURES being introduced this year will be the FUN FELLOWSHIP 7KM Run which will be held on Saturday ,race eve,, together with KL Car Free Day. You can also purchase tickets to the PASTA PARTY which will be held on the same Saturday. Book early because the seats are limited to 700 pax only.

THE COMEBACK MARATHON

After the massive disappointment of SCKLM 2015 non-starter, SCKLM will bounce back stronger, bigger and better weather permitting because of ONE REASON. The reason is the fact Dirigo Events always strive to give the participating runners the best possible experience every year. Human nature tends to make people lazy after they have experienced success, and I have seen a few running events which started well in the beginning,, but the lack of motivation to improve has led a potentially great event dropped down in quality standard. With SCKLM Team, this will not happen because the gang is proud of the good work that they have built over the years,  and they never take for granted the support of the runners, the running community, their sponsors and partners, plus it is a national duty for SCKLM to upgrade themselves year-by-year.

The prize-money remains at a decent RM480,000, and alot of money will be raised by the kind-hearted Runners for charities again

Parting Shot

I wish all the parties involved in planning, assembling, and executing SCKLM 2016 every success because if it is not Them, then who can do it so efficiently. To my fellow Runners, my message is to be patient, and ask yourself HOW YOU WANT TO FINISH SCKLM 2016…

I know more or less how Rainer will react to my expressions because he is predictable, and for a massive undertaking such as SCKLM, you need stability, reliability and continuity to make the MAGIC HAPPEN!

Save Our Rainforest Race 2016 – Press Conference

image

Save Our Rainforest Race 2016 – Press Conference

Dwindling Rainforest

Did you know that there are only 3% of Primary Rainforest remaining in Malacca when there ought to be a minimum of 30% Primary Rainforest kept aside for each State? Perlis and Negeri Sembilan are already down to 11% and 16% respectively.

The greedy Tauke Balak (Timber Tycoon) are King of our precious Rainforest to do as what they pleased regardless of the serious environmental impact of their excessive logging.

Where are the Authorities?

Ironically, those who are authorised to serve The Rainforest and The People have been racking-in big bucks over the decades to protect the billion-dollar illegal logging.

Remember the huge landslide that occurred along the Karak Highway end 2015? Well, at that time, the Authorities denied publicly any logging going on over there which could be at fault. The truth was that one year before that tragic incident, PEKA already visited the logging site, and PEKA even submitted an official letter to the Authorities warning of the possible landslide. As always, every environmental plea falls on deaf ears. There is just too much money at stake to be worried about public safety. Right after the landslide, PEKA surveyed the same logging area, and they saw the same illegal activities which is going on next to the Bentong Forestry Department! It is amazing how these people can lie directly to the Public over an issue which affects our National Treasure. It makes me sick in the stomach when I see the video evidence of how much Rainforest were are losing to the Tauke Balak, and how open & care-free they can conduct such illegal activities.

Crying To Sleep

The Orang Asli are desperate because they rely 100% of their livelihood on the Rainforest. Tragically, illegal logging has polluted their drinking water and destroy their source of food and for jungle-based income source. Will they be just another indispensable casualty of war to be swept under the proverbial carpet. Gosh, it makes me sick to be a Malaysian when we can look-away and allow our harmless ethnic minority be persecuted like that.

Dying Breed

The job of Environmentalists is a high-risk one, and like Penal Judges who pass sentence against the underworld bosses, they have a target on their backs. Just last week, one of Honduras most famous environmentalists was assassinated for just doing her job. In the Amazon Jungle, the tribal villagers have been known to clash with loggers causing deaths.

Green Day

image

In Malaysia, we prefer to pursuit more peaceful measures such as spreading public awareness. On 26th March 2016, the PEKA Team will be staging her 4th Edition of Save Our Rainforest Run 2016 (SORR 2016) at the Port Dickson Forestry Department. The highlight is the replanting of 1,000 tree saplings by 2,000 participants, and spaced-out along the jungle trail will be various games designed to bring the participants closer to nature. The atmosphere will be fully charged as Teams of Two’s will be busy fully completing their given assignments in order to collect their finishers medal at the finish line. Food and refreshments will be served to the deserving Eco Warriors, as the Festivities continue after the race.

Men’s Health Women’s Health Night Run 2016

Men’s Health Women’s Health Night Run 2016

Size Matters

Boy, I told you that Year 2016 is going to be the BEST RUNNING YEAR EVER! Here is one reason why – Men’s Health Women’s Health (MHWH) Night Run is back with a BANG! and together with NEW TITLE SPONSOR AIA Vitality, they have created Malaysia’s largest night run series! The starry night run will take place in 3 Liveliest Cities in Malaysia, namely, Penang Island on 2nd April 2016, Putrajaya on 30th July 2016, and finishing up in Johor on 7th January 2017, and a total of 33,000 runners are expected to participate and challenge themselves over a 5km, 12km or 21km course in these 3 cities.

New Alliance

image

I had attended the MHWH Night Run 2016 officially launching on 7th January 2016 at the snazzy Level 33 – SkyBar, Traders Hotel, Kuala Lumpur which was headlined by Graham Paling, Group Chief Executive Officer of Mongoose Publishing Sdn Bhd and Thomas Wong, Chief Marketing Officer of AIA Bhd. Here is what they had to say :

– “The outstanding success of the Men’s Health Women’s Health Night Run in 2015, which sold out 7,500 spaces in just a few weeks, inspired us to expand the event and create Malaysia’s biggest run series,” explains Graham Paling, Group CEO of Mongoose Publishing Sdn Bhd, the publishers of Men’s Health and Women’s Health in Malaysia.
“To deliver this enhanced experience, we needed a partner who shared our ambition and  desire to present an event that reaches more Malaysians, so they too could enjoy the experience of running with Men’s Health and Women’s Health. We could ask for no better partner than AIA, and we are proud to announce that this series will be called the Men’s Health Women’s Health Night Run by AIA Vitality.”
“It is a great pleasure to work with a wonderful brand like AIA which shares our brand values of helping Malaysians improve their lives and making themselves healthier in every sense of the word.”
– AIA Bhd.’s Chief Marketing Officer, Thomas Wong says, “We are proud to be the official title sponsor of the Men’s Health Women’s Health Night Run by AIA Vitality. The race provides a platform to celebrate vitality as a wellness goal, because being healthy is not just about looking good, it is about feeling good as well. By joining the Men’s Health Women’s Health Night Run by AIA Vitality, every individual can be empowered to feel better, healthier and ready to take on 2016 with a more positive mindset.”

Bagging Rights

image

Indeed, if the intention of both Mongoose Publishing & AIA Vitality is to create a big splash in the running scene, then they have certainly succeeded that by expanding MHWH Night Run to cover 3 cities over a period of one year. If my memory serves me right, I did run in MHWH Night Run in 2012, and I know that this event has always been the talk-of-the-town for their awesome jam-packed goodies bag: In fact, the GOODIE BAG for the Penang series is valued at more than RM500. Personally, the contents of the Goodie Bag will never influence my decision to register for any Race. To me, the race organiser’s passion and experience to put-on an enjoyable event is the KEY to a successful event. Glad to say, the Men’s Health Women’s Health Team have the ‘right stuff’ to pull-off a Running extravaganza in order to bring-out the best in Malaysian Runners.

Trifecta Medal

In MHWH 2012, I recalled that the Medals were limited because right after crossing the finish line, some distressed Runners came up to me and asked, “Where did you get that medal?” Fortunately, this time round, a unique trifecta medal will be given to ALL FINISHERS because no matter how fast or slow we run, the distance is the same, and we can all say afterwards that we have successfully completed the challenge. The Trifecta Medals are specially designed to fit together like a jigsaw puzzle to form one unique, big medal for those Runners who manage to complete all 3 events in Penang, Putrajaya and Johor.

Colourful Tees

Normal people collect stamps or fridge magnets, Runners love to collect event Tees by default. Normally, the cheaper T-shirts received from running events are worn at home. While, the quality dri-fit Tee giveaways are worn proudly all over town as a testimony to our hard efforts. In my personal collection, I have 100’s of dri-fit Tees, symbolising my past running achievements. For MHWH Night Run 2016, there are 3 different coloured and good quality fast-drying T-shirts of Orange, Blue and Red to represent the individual variety of Penang, Putrajaya and Johor Run respectively.

Year-long Commitment

image

I gladly welcome MHWH & AIA Vitality’s first time effort to initiate a running event big enough to include our running friends in the North and South of Peninsular Malaysia. After all, there are already too many running events around the Klang Valley nowadays, making it troublesome and costly for the outstation runners to join each time.

Secondly, I give two-thumbs up to MHWH for looking beyond one single event, and for investing in the running community over a 12-month period. By doing so, it is easier for Runners to plan ahead their running schedule. This supports my belief that Running should be seen as a way of life to be SAVOURED, and where the journey matters more than the final destination.

Hop On

The closing date for the Penang Run is closing on 6th March. Register HERE – JOIN the Run,and STAY for Penang’s heavenly food! A 10% discount if you REGISTER for all 3 races NOW!

Happy Runner’s Top 10 Hot Picks (2016)

image-48Happy Runner’s Top 10 Hot Picks (2016)

BUMPER CROP

The Year 2016 will offer runners the most and best choices of running events in the history of Malaysia running calendar because so many new and existing event organisers are frantically introducing exciting new format, new additions and new venues to compete with and against each other in order to grab their share of a healthy and growing demand for running events. Nevertheless, with more choices, it can get very confusing for runners to plan their running schedule  because many event dates will clash with one another.

CHERRY-PICK

To help you cherry pick the best of the best events, I have listed down below my very own TOP 10 HOT PICKS for 2016, and there is something special for virtually every kind of runner. I will update this list periodically as more events are launched throughout 2016 season. In meantime, please note that my choices are based on my own background research and accumulated race experiences, and my personal opinion may differ from yours. In any case, I have compiled my top picks to reflect my training schedule and running preparation, and taken into consideration my work schedule and family commitments at that time.

  1. Comeback Full Marathon (42km) – NEW ADDITIONS: Malaysia’s highest-rated running event, Standard Chartered Kuala Lumpur (SCKLM) was dramatically canceled at the very last minute in October 2015 due to the untimely hazardous haze. This year, Malaysia’s darling running event, SCKLM 2016 is fixed on 7th August 2016, and to make-up for last year’s non-starter, we can expect them to bounce back strongly in time to celebrate their epic 8th anniversary. Unofficially, a little bird has told me of some very interesting NEW ATTRACTIONS, and the official announcements will be made beginning March 2016. So, you will have plenty of time to register for the Early Bird rates, and take part in their comprehensive Training Clinics. For more information, visit http://www.kl-marathon.com .
  2. img-20160220-wa0002.jpgHoliday Full Marathon (42km) – NEW EVENT: Set on the beautiful island of Langkawi where eagles soar above in the blue-sky; the ocean is crystal-clear; the sandy beaches are endless; and the friendly charm of the Kampung Life will touch you. Families, couple and avid runners who are looking to combine an idyllic holiday getaway with a picturesque marathon, then the De’Lima Langkawi Marathon on 23rd April 2016 is your BEST DESTINATION. For more information, visit http://www.pelotondecafe.com .
  3. Enduring Ultra Marathon (100km) – NEW 16oKm Distance: The Eranzi Malaysia Eco 100 on 14th – 15th May 2016 promises a grueling 100km route through the best nature trails in Bukit Mertajam. According to the organiser, Malaysia Ultra Runners Association (MURA), this second year will be even better than last year’s debut in terms of tougher challenges and even more scenic natural trails. For more information, visit http://endurancenature.com.my .
  4. M7N_0809Series Run (21km) – TRIPLE THE FUN: Catch The Men’s Health Women’s Health Night Run (MHWH Night Run) for the very first time in 3 different cities – April 2 2016 on Penang Island, July 30 2016 in Putrajaya and finishing up January 7 2017 in Johor. Buoyed by the success of MHWH 2015 at Putrajaya, the owners of MHWH, Mongoose Publications, has raised the stakes by adding a NEW 21km category, as well as added 2 NEW CITY VENUES to spread the joys of running from the North to the South. For more information, visit http://www.mens-health.com.my/nightrun/ .
  5. Virtual Run (150km) – RUN ANYWHERE & ANYTIME: I had so much fun running a target distance of 100km for the inaugural Virtual Run Monthly Challenge (Holiday series) in February 2016, I can recommend the next series in March 2016 (150km) – which will be organised by the same IH Events – to any runner, season or novice, who wants to add extra motivation and fun to their daily running schedule. You will be surprise how much harder you will run when there is a reward of a snazzy running T-shirt and cool medal at the end. For more information, visit https://www.facebook.com/ihevents.my/?fref=photo .
  6. Night Run (10km) – NEW EVENT: For night owls, be the first batch to run at night in the picturesque town of Kuala Kubu Baru on 19th March 2016. I added this event into my list because Night Running is getting more popular, and I wanted to run at night in a more rural setting for a change. For more information, visit https://www.runningevents.my/form/index/11/3bb1ade0d021c27dc818302d9718c5a8 .
  7. Trail Run (16km) – BACK TO NATURE: Semenyih Eco Trail Run on 14th August 2016 offers trail runners a delightful route through forests, plantations and river-crossings. Last year, I ran in their inaugural event, and I loved the fresh air, the natural green surroundings, as well as the testy hills. For more information, visit https://www.facebook.com/Semenyih-Eco-Trail-Run-1868377296721430/?fref=ts
  8. Costume Run (15km) – NEW DISTANCE: Dress-up as your favourite superhero or villain for the Super Heroes Run on 17th April 2016. Last year, I ran 10km in their inaugural event in Bukit Jalil, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching the happy families and children wearing costumes of comic superheroes; and there is plenty of entertainment for the kids after the fun run. For more information, visit http://run.tixtac.com/superheroes-race-2016/ .
  9. IMG_20160221_084858Obstacle Challenge (13km + 30 Obstacles) – CHALLENGE YOURSELF: If you like it rough and tough, then you should not miss the world famous Spartan Race KL (Super Series) on 20th March 2016 when 10,000 gutsy participants will be released on to the specially-built muddy obstacle course in waves to test their physical and mental toughness.. For more information, visit http://spartanrace.my .
  10. Support Outstation Run (21km) – VISIT KUANTAN: In May 2015, I took part in the first Annual Kuantan Half Marathon (AKHM) which was organised by the local lads at Monkey Theory and supported by Pahang Tourism. I included this relatively new AKHM 2016, scheduled in May 2016, in my list because I feel that it is important to support more local runs outside of Klang Valley, and even in a small way, support the local Kuantan economy which offers visitors splendid beaches and holiday resorts at a reasonable budget. For more information, visit https://www.facebook.com/thebigbananatree/?fref=ts .

New Event – De’LIMA Langkawi Marathon 2016

image

New Event – De’LIMA Langkawi Marathon 2016

Where Eagles Dare

Being an avid runner, I am always looking for ways to combine my chosen running events with a holiday getaway. One of my favourite local running-cum-holiday destination is Penang Island where one can run in the Penang International Bridge Marathon every November and at the same time, indulge in epic “makanthon” sessions. This year, I have selected the inaugural De’LIMA Langkawi Marathon (DLLM) on 23rd April 2016 as my big running-holiday event. Admittedly, I have a soft spot for Langkawi Island: Apart from her magical landscape and pristine beaches, Langkawi will always hold a special place in my heart as it was the romantic location of my honeymoon in 2014.

Marathon In Paradise

Being a Duty Free Island, 2.5 million tourists visit Langkawi Island annually in order to buy cheap booze, cigarettes and perfumes; frolick on the endless beaches; visit the timeless UNESCO Geo Park; take boat trips to the 100 islands which make-up the Langkawi Archipelago; snorkel in crystal-clear ocean; enjoy a romantic sunset dinner on the beach; capture panoramic view 1,000ft high in a cable car; relax with a round of golf; defy gravity by paragliding; have breakfast on a patio overlooking breathtaking padi fields. The possibilities are endless, and one pleasure trip will not be enough to cover all of Langkawi’s highlights in one go.

With so much to offer, the De’LIMA Langkawi Marathon is the ideal new attraction to the Island’s long list of eco-tourism activities. Furthermore, Runners who visit Langkawi will be able to fully appreciate running along some of Malaysia’s most spectacular natural backdrops. One thing is for sure, runners and tourists will find the laidback villagers genuinely friendly and helpful which is part of the infectious charm of a traditional Kampung (rural) Malay lifestyle, especially in the State of Kedah.

More Than Running

I know what it is like to run a full marathon in concrete cities, but I want to feel what it is like to run while the salty sea air fills my nostrils. I want the sea breeze to blow soothingly as Eagles glide majestically in the blue sky. I want to feel the warm glow of the morning Sun. I want to run alongside deserted beaches and be distracted by the mesmerising waves. I want the kampung children to gleefully wave me along my way. Will my wish come true? On 23rd April 2016, I will embark on my De’LIMA Langkawi Marathon history-making journey from Aseania Resort & Spa Langkawi Island, Pantai Chenang with 3,000 other expected full and half-marathoners, and no matter what the outcome, I know that it will be a marathon experience like no other.

Register NOW and take advantage of preferential rates at Aseania Resort & Spa Langkawi Island for De’LIMA Langkawi Marathon 2016 participants. For more event details, visit the official website, and for event updates, Like the official page.

Pink Ribbon Event

There is no nobler cause than supporting the betterment of the lives of women in our country. Since its inception in 2013, the principal objective of Malaysia Women Marathon (MWM) is to inspire every woman to run together and strengthen the bonds of sisterhood. As Race Director, Karen Loh  points out, “In the world, there are only 4 women-only marathons, and we can be proud that Malaysia is one of them, beside Osaka, Yokohama and Nagoya Women Marathon.”.

Running Against Injustice

Even in today’s modern, advanced and globalised world, the old-age problem of discrimination and violence against women still haunts us. What is the point of giving Women the right to vote if there are still Women subjected to sexual discrimination in the workplace, and physical abuse at home. In reality, there is no quick-fix solution to gender inequality. However, we can all make a difference today if we can learn to understand, appreciate and respect the important roles that Women play in our society as mothers, wives, workers, entrepreneurs and leaders.

Malaysia Women Marathon is making a difference by, firstly, giving Women the opportunity to build their self-esteem and self-confidence through the positive impact of running. Secondly, MWM is elevating the social status of women by giving them an exclusive platform to demonstrate that women are physically and mentally tough enough to take on any difficult challenge such as running a daunting full marathon.

Men Wanted Too

The Men are encouraged to give support to the Women as a pacer or as part of the cheering squad. After all, there will be many women runners there who will be anxious about running their first 10km, 21km or 42km on the 6th March 2016, and to them, the difference between success and failure could be having their loved ones running alongside them or their family waiting at the finish line, waiting to give them a big hug. Success is always sweeter when we have someone with whom we can share it.

Spirit Of Togetherness

image

What makes MWM outstanding is the special way in which the participants are encouraged to train together, support each other and finally, run together.

image

Being part of the MWM Family means training together at the scheduled running clinics;  inspiring each other during the many running-related workshops and discussion forums planned on 4th & 5th March 2016; and most importantly, it is about knowing that a friend is always with you every step of your running journey.

Just look at the inspirational guest-speakers lined up:-

Global Mission

There is more at stake here than just running to beat your best time. I am not exaggerating when I say that by participating in MWM 2016, you are courageously helping our society to eradicate gender discrimination and send a strong message of unity and hope for a better world under the tagline – “Run Sisters, Run”.

image

In closing, as a running couple, my wife and I are eagerly looking forward to run in our second MWM together, and to try-out the new full marathon route. The only question left is whether I should run in a skirt…

A Runner and A Gentleman

image

A Runner and A Gentleman

Runners play a significant role in determining whether an event is enjoyable or not. At the same time, being a customer does not give a runner the right to act like a monkey. We can all agree that no one likes to see offensive behaviour in sports. In Golf, there is an official etiquette which all golfers around the world must follow strictly. In commercial running events, there is no such official code of conduct, except occasionally, there is a race guidebook whose contents differ from one event to another. To help novice Runners get along with the experienced runners and make more friends, I have listed below some essential guidelines which can apply to all Runners and in any running event. Following my tips may not win you a popularity contest, but at least, you will not accidentally rain on someone else’s parade.

9 Good Running Habits

1. No Whining! Before registering for any event, be sure to conduct a thorough background check on the event organiser and read fully the terms and conditions of the event.

2. Your Health, Your Responsibility! Get a your doctor’s approval before taking part in a run, especially for new runners and runners with a medical condition.

3. No DNF! Be prepared and train adequately before going for any running challenge. It is sad to see a fellow Runner suffering from cramps and crying in pain.

4. Be Civil! Be considerate and courteous to other runners. Do not push and shove other runners. Do not spit while running with other runners nearby. Do not curse other runners or race volunteers. If you have to stop or walk, veer to the left of the road first.

5. Be Aware! Read and follow the race DOs and DON’Ts carefully. If you have any doubt, seek clarification from the organisers.

6. No Tantrums! Be fair to the race organiser. If you have a problem regarding the event, do not cry and shout about it online without first seeking proper clarification. Explain to the race organiser clearly what is your problem or the nature of your complaint. Organisers are more likely to assist you if you speak to them patiently and in a calm manner. Then, try and resolve the issue amicably between the two of you before seeking any 3rd Party arbitration. Most of the time, your problem is only a small oversight or misunderstanding which can be resolved quickly without much fuss.

7. Be Heard! Customer feedback is important to event companies because it can significantly help them to improve their products and services in the future. Therefore, as a customer, you should send a short note to the event organiser afterwards explaining what you like and dislike about their events.

8. Help Others! Leave no one behind. If you see another runner in obvious physical pain, ask them, “Can I help you?” or “Can I get you help?”. It is best for the whole running community when runners look-out for one another during a run, and as the saying goes – “If you want to run fast, run alone, but if you want to run far, run as a team”.

9. Life & Death! Always make sure that you have written the correct emergency contact name and number on your running bib.

Virtual Run Got Real

image

Virtual Run Got Real

Spectacular Opening Act

What a start to 2016! I managed to survive 5 mixed bags of highlight events in the first month of January, and live to write about them all – KL New Year Run 10km, Compressport Trail Run 12km, MPI Generali Run 10km, Straco XC MTB Jamboree 46km, Warrior Trail 25 Obstacles + 10km.

image

All these events, except for MPI Generali, were first-time events; and I was impressed by how well all the 5 events were managed and I hope there will be a second edition soon so that more people have the opportunity to experience these unique & value-for-money sporting events in case they had missed the first one.

What Happens Next?!

How do I follow-up on such a awesome start to 2016, especially since February normally is a slow month in the running calendar? Then, my friend, Idayu of IH Events, gave me an unexpected solution, “Gus, why not register for the Virtual Run Monthly Challenge?”. A lightbulb flashed in my head, and I asked her, “ You mean, I can run without running?!”. To be honest, I was clueless to what all this hype surrounding Virtual Runs was about. Then, after hearing Idayu’s explanation, my next question was, “Where do I sign-up?”.

image

Futuristic Running

If you have not heard about Virtual Runs, let me share with you what it is about and how it can enhance your running game. Essentially, a Virtual Run allows a runner to remotely join in a running event from any location, and at any time or day which suit the Virtual Runner schedule. Confused? Let me clarify further. Let’s say, you want to join a particular running event, but unfortunately, the event day clashes with another important appointment which you had fixed earlier. If that running event organiser has a Virtual Run option, then you can still earn and receive the event T-shirt and finisher medal through the post, as long as you run a predetermined distance ANYWHERE over a given timeframe which is typically one month. The Virtual Run details such as registration fees, runner’s entitlements, required distance, running tracking methods, and timeframe will vary from event to event, and they are to be determined in advance by the organiser.

Extra Training Motivation

Once I registered for Virtual Run Monthly Challenge (VRMC) 100km Holiday Series, every time, I go for a run in February, I log my running data using Strava. Then, each time, I complete my run, whatever the distance, I send my Strava running activity information to the organiser IH Events by gmail or post it on their official VRMC 100km Holiday Series FB page. At the end, after verifying that I have hit my challenge target 100km, IH Event will post me my event T-shirt and medal. Of course,  Runners using GPS watches can send their running data to the organiser in the same way for official distance recording purposes. So far, being a Virtual Runner has transformed my lackluster training routines into fun and exciting episodes. Surprisingly, I had never expected that the draw of earning a Tee & Medal could have motivated me as much as it has done during training sessions. Maybe this was just the right tonic that I needed to uplift my spirits, keep me focused and subsequently, improve my training performances. I will reserve my final judgement until end of February. Meantime, I must remind myself not to spend too much time counting mileage, and instead, I should enjoy every step of my virgin virtual experience.

Virtual vs Real Running

Certainly, Virtual Runs will NEVER replace the electric atmosphere of actual running events. However, Virtual Runs can be useful for Runners who cannot physically be present at certain events, as well as for Runners, like myself, who want to boost their training mileage by giving themselves extra incentives in the form of attractive T-shirts and medals. If you fancy a 100km or 50km Virtual Challenge in February, you have until 15th February 2016 to REGISTER !

Cross-Country (XC) Cycling And Running

fb_img_1453380817614.jpgCross-Country (XC) Cycling And Running at Paya Indah Wetland

Recently, my friends Becky Chua & Joie Chin of STRACO event company organised their first sports event consisting of XC Mountain Bike (MTB) Jamboree (46km) & Trail Run (10km) categories at the Paya Indah Wetland, situated 6km from Dengkil. Their inaugural event attracted 800 Mountain Bikers and 350 Trail Runners who were game to try-out a new and captivating venue. Becky Chua said, “We wanted to give both cyclists and runners a unique opportunity to ride and run at this lovely nature reserve, surrounded by unspoilt greenery and lakes”.

fb_img_1453381056503.jpgMy First MTB Outing

Previously, my imaginary fear of injury by crashing down some rocky hill or tumbling down a deep ravine had prevented me from joining any off-road mountain bike event. However, I made an exception in this case because I wanted to find-out first-hand what is the attraction of cycling off the beaten track, so to speak. Secondly, since I had never been to Paya Indah Wetland, this was a great opportunity to explore the area on a bicycle with the full support and supervision of course marshals and volunteers. Psyching myself up for my virgin ride, I reassured myself, “If I can handle cycling regularly on busy city roads, I should be able to overcome the fear of crashing my bike in the jungle too”.

fb_img_1453397320139.jpgColour Me Mud

As soon as day broke, we rolled-out on our epic 46km XC ride. Initially, I pedaled as hard as I could, and I overtook some riders by taking full advantage of my fresh legs. Just as I began to settle down to a steady and swift speed, we came across our first real challenge which was a 1km narrow stretch of intimidating muddy trails. My bike slipped and slided as I mustered all my riding skills not to fall-over or hit the rider in front. Occasionally, we had to dismount and push our bikes laboriously through ankle-deep mud. Huffing and puffing our way through this muddy section, it felt like we were moving in slow-motion. Lucky for me, my bike and I passed through this sludge without a hitch, but the gigantic effort required had took some of the wind out of my sails for several minutes.

fb_img_1453381086646.jpgWheels Keep On Spinning

In the stillness of the natural surroundings, we whizzed along pristine lakes and across green fields, palm estates and country lanes. During the long ride, it felt good to be totally surrounded by nature instead of concrete buildings, and it was rejuvenating change to be breathing in fresh instead of polluted air. The only sounds audible were the bike wheels spinning on the gravel, dried leaves and broken twigs. I was really tempted to take photographs of such scenic landscape, but instead, I kept cycling, keen to cover as much distance before my muscles tired-out.

Cramp My Style

Two kilometres from the finish line, I could feel a twinge of cramp along my inner thighs which I blamed on my lack of adequate training. Not wanting to worsen the situation, I slowed-down my speed to give my weary legs some time to recover. With only one kilometre to go, I could almost smell the finish line. There was just one more steep climb left between me and glory. To play safe, I decided to push my bike up the last hill. Then, as soon as I dismounted my bike, both my legs cramped-up and my knees locked-up, and I just laid beside the track in agony, feeling completely helpless and defeated. All that I wanted more than anything, at that point in time, was to make my excruciating pain disappear. Low and behold, my prayers were answered in the shape of a rider and a marshal who immediately massaged and treated my legs. Thanks to the help of these two good samaritans, I was able to continue and cycle happily back to the finish line and join the rest of the exhausted riders and runners, recovering from their respective grueling races.

I’ll Be Back

My first MTB ride was a steep learning curve, and I enjoyed every exciting moment of it. Apparently, cycling cross-country (XC) does not have to be dangerous to be fun. In fact, given the same opportunity, I would not hesitate to hop on my bicycle and head for the trails less traveled again.
