New Event – De’LIMA Langkawi Marathon 2016
Where Eagles Dare
Being an avid runner, I am always looking for ways to combine my chosen running events with a holiday getaway. One of my favourite local running-cum-holiday destination is Penang Island where one can run in the Penang International Bridge Marathon every November and at the same time, indulge in epic “makanthon” sessions. This year, I have selected the inaugural De’LIMA Langkawi Marathon (DLLM) on 23rd April 2016 as my big running-holiday event. Admittedly, I have a soft spot for Langkawi Island: Apart from her magical landscape and pristine beaches, Langkawi will always hold a special place in my heart as it was the romantic location of my honeymoon in 2014.
Marathon In Paradise
Being a Duty Free Island, 2.5 million tourists visit Langkawi Island annually in order to buy cheap booze, cigarettes and perfumes; frolick on the endless beaches; visit the timeless UNESCO Geo Park; take boat trips to the 100 islands which make-up the Langkawi Archipelago; snorkel in crystal-clear ocean; enjoy a romantic sunset dinner on the beach; capture panoramic view 1,000ft high in a cable car; relax with a round of golf; defy gravity by paragliding; have breakfast on a patio overlooking breathtaking padi fields. The possibilities are endless, and one pleasure trip will not be enough to cover all of Langkawi’s highlights in one go.
With so much to offer, the De’LIMA Langkawi Marathon is the ideal new attraction to the Island’s long list of eco-tourism activities. Furthermore, Runners who visit Langkawi will be able to fully appreciate running along some of Malaysia’s most spectacular natural backdrops. One thing is for sure, runners and tourists will find the laidback villagers genuinely friendly and helpful which is part of the infectious charm of a traditional Kampung (rural) Malay lifestyle, especially in the State of Kedah.
More Than Running
I know what it is like to run a full marathon in concrete cities, but I want to feel what it is like to run while the salty sea air fills my nostrils. I want the sea breeze to blow soothingly as Eagles glide majestically in the blue sky. I want to feel the warm glow of the morning Sun. I want to run alongside deserted beaches and be distracted by the mesmerising waves. I want the kampung children to gleefully wave me along my way. Will my wish come true? On 23rd April 2016, I will embark on my De’LIMA Langkawi Marathon history-making journey from Aseania Resort & Spa Langkawi Island, Pantai Chenang with 3,000 other expected full and half-marathoners, and no matter what the outcome, I know that it will be a marathon experience like no other.
