Twitterthon 2016 – Malaysia’s First Social Media Run!

Twitterthon 2016 – Malaysia’s First Social Media Run!

Social Media Geeks

Following the success of Twitterthon in 2015, the folks at Malaysia Social Media Chambers (MSMC) are organising the second edition of their 5km Fun Run at Lake Gardens KL on 15th May 2016.

Wait a minute! Do you know who is Malaysia Social Media Chambers (MSMC)? They are a “Non-Profit Organisation dedicated to advancing and advocating the discipline of credible social media “. With so much cybercrime, hate & filth floating around on the internet, it is good to know that there are organisations like MSMC who represent what is good about the Internet.

Rewind Back To Twitterthon 2015: Mr Teo Cang Peng of MSMC explained, “In previous year, Twitterthon attracted almost 2k runners. The event highlights were our interactive stations by different companies like Petronas, Maybank, Utusan and many more. They have different kinds of interesting activities where the runners can enjoy and take selfie in order get their additional goodies after that. Feedback was good, it’s a new idea and different from the usual fun run or obstacles run.”

image

This year, Twitterthon will have 9 checkpoints along the 5km route which means more FUN ACTIVITIES and MORE PRIZES!

All you need is a fully-charged smartphone, a Twitter, FB or Instagram account, and you can join in all the fun and games lined-up on the day.

If you do not have any Social Media account, you do not need to fret because you are still welcome to join us for the fun run, festivities and help us promote a healthier community.

All Participants will be entitled to Twitterthon cool T-shirt and snazzy Medal to mark this special occasion.

* Happy Runner’s Preview *

RUN. SNAP. SHARE. REPEAT.

In 2011, I started taking ‘selfie’ photos at running events as a way to record my Running adventures. Back then, none of my friends were taking selfies and smart phone technology was still at its infancy. In fact, my hand phone did not have internet connection.

Today, taking post race selfies with Medals have become a popular practice among runners. For me, it has become part of my Running ritual and with the help of social media, I can now share instantly my Running Selfies with my friends. Along the way, I am humbled by some runners who told me that I had inspired them to start running – wow! So, I never underestimate the Power of the Internet ever since.

YIng And Yang

Social Media and Running compliment each other very well. Social Media Platforms, especially FB, provide Runners with a convenient way to connect with one another, participate in discussion forums, and organise training sessions together. Thinking about it, we are so immersed in social media that sometimes, we do not even realise on how dependant we have become on the internet phenomena in our daily lives. Learning how to tap into the Power of the Internet to enhance our lives economically and socially is the key to a successful future in this Digital Age.

JOIN ME and 2,000 happy campers at Twitterthon 2016 for a good time outdoors at the enchanting surroundings of Lake Gardens. Together, we will celebrate our friendship and our good health with a little help from Information Technology.

Super Heroes Race (SHR) 2016 – Up In The Air

Super Heroes Race (SHR) 2016 – Up In The Air

image

What A Difference A Year Makes

Last year’s inaugural Super Heroes Race in Bukit Jalil was a big hit among the 1,500 participants. Apart from the fact that the finishers medals had to be distributed during the race kit collection due to copyright infringement threats, the race went smoothly without a hitch. In particular, the 10KM route was nice, the traffic was well marshalled, and the post-race party was very enjoyable: There were lots of free ice-cream, snacks and drinks on offer, as well as various Kiddies entertainment such as giant balloons and a bouncy castle to keep the children happily occupied. The adults were kept entertained by two young and lively emcees, playing games and music, were gayly giving away prizes to the podium finishers and lucky draw winners. The atmosphere was filled with so much laughter and merriment that no one was in a hurry to go home.

image

Fast forward to SHR 2016

This year’s second Super Heroes Race is a totally different matter, and it is becoming a regrettable fiasco from the start, and here are some of the major cock-ups so far :-

1) Venue was changed from Putrajaya to MATIC, Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur. It seems that when title sponsor came on board that they insisted on shifting the venue to their KL centre without any regard to the paying customers who had signed-up in order to run in Putrajaya!

2) The big bomb was announced by Tix Tac (NM Galaxy registration portal) Race Director Ariff Sidek that due to other major event happening in KL on the same day as the race day, 24-April 2016, it was necessary to change the event to 22-May 2016 TENTATIVELY! And what’s more, this announcement was made only 3 days before the initial Race date. Well, this announcement was met with an instant avalanche of condemnation from the participants who vented their anger and frustrations at the poor handling of the situation on the Tix Tax FB page. Why are the participants screaming blue murder? Are they entitled for a refund? How will Race Director handle this, potentially fatal self-inflicted wound? What does all this tell us about the state of Race Organisation & Management? What are the possible effects of this malaise on other Runners, Event Organisers, and on the general running community in the future? Read on to find-out the answers and more insights.

3) The notification for the postponement of the race date was only posted on Facebook. Surely, something as important as this news should have been notified to all the participants by email as well as by SMS too!

4) There were confusions about the postal charges included in the registration fees even though the participants may not have required delivery services.

5) Almost everyone was complaining about the lack of communication and insufficient news updates by the TixTac registration portal. In this case, no news is bad news. A good organiser must be easy to contact, and they will keep their participants constantly updated on any news or behind-the-scenes preparations to assure the runners that everything is going according to plan. The bad organiser never acknowledges receipt of your email, they are slow to reply, and they like to keep you in the dark of the latest developments, or they have nothing to report!

6) The date of the REPC was “quietly” changed to only 2 days instead of the original 3 days, and the timing was also quietly changed to 11am~6pm instead of the more convenient 10am~8pm.

Working Experience Counts

What I have noticed about running events is that mistakes and mishaps are natural phenomena of any event because you cannot totally control the crowd, the crew, the traffic, and you cannot predict human behaviour and not least, our fickle weather. However, some failures are excusable and some are not. Only a truly experienced organiser will know if a risk is worth taking or not. When new & inexperienced Organisers see the huge numbers of runners joining certain events, they are asking themselves, “That looks easy enough, why can’t I organise one like that?” Fatally, perhaps due to being persuaded by the thought of being able to make big bucks, the newcomers fail to realise that it took many years of hard work in the field to gain the necessary experience, and building important relationships with Sponsors, Suppliers and related Government Bodies and Local Municipalities over the years before one is qualified to organise a big event on a big high profile stage. It is best that new players either spend the initial years gaining experience with smaller events and/or engaged with a team of real experts who know exactly what needs to be done to achieve success.

Organising an event with up to 1,500 runners in Bukit Jalil (as in the case of SHR 2015) can be handled by a group of passionate part-timers. However, when you talk about 5,000 Runners (with 5,000 different opinions) in the heart of busy KL, that is a totally different ball game where the risks and rewards are extremely high, and when you play with the Big Boys in their backyard, you can expect for some rough times as NM Galaxy is finding all about it now.

To Change Or Not To Change

Changing event venue is only excusable if there is a suspected bomb threat, and not if a VIP wants to use the same venue for another event. Postponing an event because of unforeseen natural disaster is excusable, but postponing because the organiser failed to realise that the stretch of Jalan Ampang in front of the MATIC race venue is closed every 1st & 3rd Sundays of every month, from 7am to 9am for the well-known KL Car Free Morning, is certainly not excusable.

More Than Money

When an organiser start changing Race Venues and Event Dates, the cost to the participants is not only in monetary terms, but more importantly, the organiser has wasted the time of the participants which nobody on this planet can replace lost time unless they happened to own a time machine. Of course, not to mention the stress and irritation of having to go out of your way to accommodate all these changes about which you were not forewarned when you purchased the admission ticket.

Gloomy Weather Predicted

I was at the first day of Race Kit Collection at MATIC in Jalan Ampang. I won’t say how I felt about the attitude and behaviour of the Race Director, but I can tell you that the volunteers were feeling really embarrassed about the whole unwanted situation, and I can see the utter disappointment in the eyes of the Runners. It seemed that they looked really let down, and there were no smiles and laughter to be heard anywhere in the vicinity. They needed to be consoled. Someone should have been there to put a comforting arm around their shoulder and say,” I am really sorry for our mistake, and as a token of our appreciation for your great support, we would like to give you this small token for a free Subway Sandwich or a pair of Running socks,” or anything. Sadly, all that they received was another double slap in the face as they were told that no refunds will be entertained and that the new race date is not confirmed!

Disappoint The Kids!

I pity the parents who had to break the bad news of the race postponement to their children who must have been looking forward to wearing their Superhero costumes.

I pity the mother who had to sew the capes for her family’s costumes.

I pity the father who had to go to the DIY shop to buy the materials to make the costumes.

image

Mary (Left) & Sebastian (Middle)

I met two friendly middle-aged couple, Sebastian & Mary from KL, who had just collected their bibs. Sebastian told me he is planning to dress-up as Superman as he proudly pointed to the big “S” emblem printed on his T-shirt. Mary had not decided yet on her superhero costume. I thought she would make a great Louis Lane.

Sebastian commented, “I feel more sorry for the outstation Runners, coming from afar like Singapore, Johor and Penang. They have more to lose from the race postponement than us.”

Mary added, “Postponing the race last minute is unfair because the organiser had time since November 2015 to plan for it”.

image

Nick (L) carrying a big load

I also met Nick who had his hands full collecting 20 bibs for his family, his sister’s family and for his friends. Nick said, “My family are only doing the 3km for the children’s enjoyment. I am not sure if I can make the race in May because I will be traveling a lot that month”.

Do The Right Thing

As far as I can see, NM Galaxy and TixTac has two choices. One choice will mean taking a financial loss in the short term, but keeping their self-respect and dignity. The other way will mean a lost in their reputation as an event organiser from which they may never recover, and no one will ever trust them again.

In all seriousness, for the sake of the whole running community, I hope that NM Galaxy and TixTac issue an unequivocal public apology right away to the participants, and man-up by accepting full responsibility for all the failures and for putting the participants through undue hardship and stress. Moreover, the organiser should give back full refund immediately to any participants who officially request for it.

Unfortunately, I really doubt if this organiser is big enough to offer a refund because when I met Race Director Arrif, he was still blaming the Authorities for the race postponement – I rest my case..

image

Deserving Common Courtesy

For your information, I have sent a copy of this posting directly to the Co-Founders of NM Galaxy and TixTac at the same time that I posted it because I know them personally, and they are genuine guys who are trying their best to give Runners the best experience, and they deserve the courtesy of hearing about my harsh criticisms first hand.

Jeti Seafood Restaurant

The Jeti Seafood Restaurant

image

Food Blogger?

If you have read my blog before, you will notice that I specialise in sharing tales of my sporting adventures. Nevertheless, from time to time, like now for instance, I will blog about my other favourite past times such as Eating, Traveling & Movie-watching. This time, I would like to share my latest visit to one of my favourite seafood restaurant, Jeti, at the classic fishing village of Pasir Penampang in Kuala Selangor.

image

Of Bygone Days

For the uninitiated, Pasir Penampang is set along a wide river estuary, and it is a 60 to 90 minutes drive from Kuala Lumpur depending if you take the faster GCE/LATAR HIGHWAY or the old Route 54 to Sekinchan and Teluk Intan.

image

The fishing village comprise of just one 500m metre long main street, and at the centre is a popular fresh fish market selling the local catch in abundance. There is a school at one end, and the jetties at the other. These days, I guess the local students from that school are more likely to end-up as office workers in Kuala Lumpur than following the labour-intensive trade of fishermen at the jetty-end of their forefathers. The 2-storey shop lots there remain mostly in their original state, giving new visitors a rare glimpse into another era before hi-tech depersonalised and controlled our lives.

image

Chill People

You can differentiate the locals from the visitors from the former’s practical clothing choice of unbranded T-shirts and short pants, and the locals are can be seen minding their own business and running errands on their little scooters or bicycles. Both this Village and its inhabitants are very laid back, and here, there is no real need to be rushing around like we do in towns and cities. On the other hand, the city-slick visitors and tourists who come here are dressed-up for an outing, and upon arrival, it takes them a few minutes to adjust themselves to the slow pace of village life. The visitors walk around with eyes wide-open in wonderment, before they invariably head to one of the dry-fish shops and seafood restaurants to buy and savour the local sea-based products and dishes.

Cheaper, Fresher And Better

image

There are several dried goods shop where you can pick-up good quality dried shrimps and anchovies, as well as prawn crackers at wholesale prices which make perfect gifts or ingredients for the visitors to take home.

If you want to beat the heat, there are plenty of fresh coconut water available to quench your thirst.

I noticed that the fresh fish sold in the market is as much as RM2 cheaper per kilogram than in KL. You can buy a styrofoam box for RM6 to keep your purchased seafood chilled for the journey back home.

If you love fruits, then, there are many friendly fruit sellers by the roadside and in front of the market offering mouth-watering local fruits such as rambutans, mangosteens, mangoes, watermelon and corn at seasonal prices.

Other shops available are traditional chinese coffee shops, barbers, hairdressers, karaoke, cyber cafe, sundry shops, and convenience stores.

The Main Attraction

image

The biggest attraction to Penampang Pasir is the fresh seafood, and there are many restaurants available alongside the river to cater for the hungry visitors. One of the most popular among local tourists is the Jeti Seafood Restaurant which is located at the end of main street by a small jetty. Most times, the restaurant is packed with patrons occupying the 30, or so, striking red-clothed tables. It is a favourite spot for family gatherings, for dinners with friends or colleagues, and for hosting overseas visitors.

image

image

For my wife and I, we always order our same favourite dishes every time – fried mee hoon with lala, fried crayfish with salted eggs, and a bowl of fishball and vegetable soup. With a side order of hot and cold Chinese tea, to wash it all down. The food not tastes good, but our bill comes-out to less than RM50 or a mere 18 Singapore Dollars. However, to me, the view of the river and mangrove swamp on the opposite embankment is priceless. I recommend you reach there before 12pm and 6pm for lunch and dinner respectively, in order to beat the big crowd. Early dinner is ideal because the weather is less hot, and you can catch the beautiful sunset over the river.

image

Boat Rides

image

image

After your meal, you can enjoy a boat ride to view eagles soaring above the mangrove sanctuary during the day, and at night, the boat ride will take you to view the magical fire-flies. Passengers board the boats next to the Jeti Seafood Restaurant. If I can remember correctly the boat ride lasts for 45 minutes, and it costs RM25 per person.

image

Local History And Eco-tourism

The District of Kuala Selangor plays a pivotal administrative centre for the region throughout history. There is a museum near the famous lighthouse at Bukit Melawati which displays many interesting historical artefacts and a good source of information for the public to enjoy. At the foot of the hill, there is the entrance to the mangrove sanctuary where visitors can rent-out chalets or go bird-watching. On my next trip, I hope to bring along my Casio FR-100 and capture photos of the sceneries of the lighthouse and it’s natural surroundings.

image

So far, from what I can see, the Kuala Selangor Municipality (Majlis Perbandaran Kuala Selangor) is doing well to preserve the local heritage, culture and communities which is bringing in much tourist dollars. However, the pressure of modernisation brought about by influential developers is always present and ready to destroy old historical buildings to make way for more profitable concrete high-rise commercial buildings. Already, I can see a new Giant Hypermarket and modern two-storey shop lots along the main trunk road, near the turn-off to the quaint fishing village. I hope Kuala Selangor local authorities and communities work hard to preserve their beautiful township and protect the environment for many generations to come.

The event saw Malaysians from all walks of life taking on the various categories of the inaugural race, as the fun lasted through the night in the Runners Village where there were celebrity DJs, live music and many of the country’s best food trucks.

Entertainment in the village began at 5.30pm and lasted until well past midnight with an array of food vendors at the “Time Out Penang Food Village”. Live music acts included Kien Lim and Penang singer/songwriter Daniel C who performed at the Somersby Sound Stage. Dangerdisko, and headline star Patricia K also dee-jayed until late so that runners returning from their exertions around the course could join the revellers.
The race route took runners through some of Penang’s most breath-taking sights under the night sky, eye-catching among which was the spectacular Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah bridge in the background. The scene proved popular among selfie fans as many were spotted taking photos to remember the night.

“This would not have been possible without the valued support of our title sponsor, AIA Vitality. AIA shares our vision and have been a great partner and ally in making our vision into reality. We look forward to working with them on the next legs of the Night Run Series in Putrajaya and Johor.”

Thomas Wong, Chief Marketing Officer of AIA Bhd, said, “As Malaysia’s leading life insurer, we want to play an active role in empowering Malaysians to take charge of their health. For a bit of fun, guests were invited to juice their own fruits by pedalling on static bikes, as well as challenge each other to games of zorb ball.

The food trucks and vendors at the Time Out Penang Food Village proved especially popular with runners, their families and Penang-based visitors who came down to join the party. While on the Somersby Sound Stage, there were performances by Kien Lim and Penang singer/songwriter Daniel C. After which, there was a headline DJ set from by one of Malaysia’s hottest female DJs, Patricia K, who is also one of the event ambassadors for the Men’s Health Women’s Health Night Run by AIA Vitality.
“Running events are about challenging yourself and pushing your limits, but we feel it is also important to have fun in the process. The turn out this year is very good and we are overwhelmed by the overall support given by the runners and guests. With the food and fantastic music we hope everyone had a great time!” said Sueann Chong, Editor of Women’s Health.

UP, UP AND AWAY!

UP, UP AND AWAY!

Movie Party

Recently, NM Galaxy hosted 40 lucky contestants to watch the latest movie blockbuster, “Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice”, at e-Curve Damansara. My wife and I tagged along for the popcorn. If you have not seen the movie, don’t fret because I will not reveal the ending here, but I will give later my two-cents worth of commentary for the sake of prosperity.

Who Are NM Galaxy?

Local Runners will know NM Galaxy as the event organiser for local races and fun runs such as Commando Elite Challenge series and the second installment of Super Heroes Race (SHR) to be held on 17th April 2016 in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Last year, under invitation, I ran 10km at the inaugural Super Heroes Race 2015 in Bukit Jalil, and I had a ball watching the hundreds of smiley kids, families and friends running together, while dressed up in their favourite comic heroes, as well as villains costumes. This year, SHR 2016 promises to deliver more fun and excitement, as Kuala Lumpur city will be the venue where a whopping 5,000 costume Runners are expected to strut their stuff along a 15km, 10km and 3km routes.

image

Men Of Steel & Heart

Normally, I do not post comments on movies, but this latest Hollywood Movie Blockbuster is so different in its plot that it is worthy of some explanation. Before watching the movie, I was puzzled by the disappointing movie reviews – some critics belittled the movie plot, while others slammed the movie producers for choosing the famous actor, Ben Afleck to play the role of Batman. On the contrary, after having watched this movie, I found the movie very intriguing and entertaining, but not in the usual, hero-kills-baddies-and-save the world way.

Broody Batman

image

To me, Ben Afleck’s pained character stole the show because he really made me feel his suffering and depression as a result of witnessing the double murders of his parents as a teenager. I could see the sadness and anger in the eyes of his Bruce Wayne character. It was acting at the highest level, and this something that I would never expect to say about a cartoon-based character. Yes, Afleck’s presence brought a touch of class and hard-hitting realism to an otherwise predictable fantasy movie. So, for those who are expecting a run-of-the-mill feel-good movie, I suggest you read the comic instead.

Real-Life Heroes

While watching the movie, it made me realise that you do not need super human powers to be a hero. In fact, it is dangerous to be the all-powerful Superman when there is nobody strong enough to point-out your mistakes. If you help an old lady cross the road, then you are as much of a hero as Superman.

Costume Run

I want to take this opportunity to thank NM Galaxy boss, Muazan Mohsin, and TIXTAC for taking the initiative to engage with the runners and for a fun movie night out. Special thanks to the courteous hostess, Sha, for hosting and shepherding the guests to our couple seats. Not forgetting to thank my wife, Maryati, for waking me up whenever I started nodding-off!

image

To the Super Heroes Runners, I wish you a most enjoyable outing on 17th April 2016 – All you guys are already Heroes in your own special way…TO THE BAT CAVE!

Running In The Jungle

Running In The Jungle

Save Our Rainforest Run 2016 (SORR 2016)

Tomorrow, 2,000 participants will be running & walking 15km inside the forest reserve at Sungai Menyala in Port Dickson, and the best part is that we will be planting 1,000 tree saplings. Admittedly, the rate of trees being chopped-down far outweighs the numbers being replanted. However, in reality, it is a monumental task for Non-Governmental Organisations such as the SORR 2016 organiser, PEKA (Pertubuhan Pelindung Khazanah Alam Malaysia) to find more sponsors because the relevant Forestry Departments, themselves, are doing practically nothing to prevent powerful Timber Tycoons & Building Barons from destroying our precious Rainforest under the pretext of “development”. Nevertheless, every tree counts, and goodwill events such as SORR 2016 are invaluable to highlighting to the general public regarding the importance of PROTECTING,SAVING & PRESERVING our life-giving flora and fauna for future generations. So, if you are joining us tomorrow, give yourself a big pat on the back for supporting Mother Nature. There are many more ways that we can do our part to preserve our natural resources, and it is even becoming universally cool to save our planet from global-scale man-made destruction of our environment. Won’t it be great if we really walk the talk, and we take accountability for all of our own actions affecting the balance of nature.

Jungle Running Tips

I was requested by PEKA to share some of my key tips on what Save Our Rainforest Run participants can do to make their SORR 2016 experience, whether it is their first or fourth time, more enjoyable and memorable. My tips below are based on my own jungle running experiences and on my previous participation in SORR 2014: My recommendations are by no means exhaustive, and in case of any doubt, you should ultimately contact PEKA for any clarification.

10 Trail Tips

1. Drink, drink & drink some more. Given the current heatwave and the natural sauna-effect of the jungle, keeping yourself hydrated before, during and after our run is of paramount importance. Drinks lots of water the night before. You can bring along a small water bottle and sip periodically during the run. You can also top-up with water at the drink stations provided along the route. After the event, continue to drink water & isotonic drink to aid recovery.

2. Get all your gear ready, especially your bib number and event Tee, and rest well the night before the event.

image

Mr & Mrs Happy Runner

3. Wear proper hiking or running shoes as the trail will be uneven and sometimes wet.

4. This is not a race. So, run and/or walk briskly according to your level of fitness. If you are not used to exercising, then you should just walk briskly and take a short breaks if you are feeling tired. If you are feeling dizzy or unwell, then immediately notify one of the available medic Personal to assist you.

5. Plan to arrive at the venue at 6:00am or earlier, so that you have time to find a parking space, and enjoy the breakfast provided.

6. Do not leave any cash or valuables in your car or anywhere unattended. Bring a spare change of clothes and slippers in case the trail is muddy.

7. Do take part in the pre-run warm-up session in order to minimise the risk of muscle injuries or cramps later.

8. At flag-off, start slowly and do not push the other Runners. It is a 15km Trail, so there will be plenty of time and space to overtake the slower Runners later.

9. Always work as a team, and help each other complete the various given tasks as efficiently as possible. Never leave your partner behind. Do not veer off the marked course without notifying an official beforehand.

10. Do not litter or damage the surrounding environment. If possible, do pick-up any litter left behind by others.

We Are Environmentalists!

You do not have to be a hardcore tree-hugger to be an environmentalist. If you pick-up other people’s litter, then you are an environmentalist. If you wash your car using rain water, then you are an environmentalist too. Every little bit that we do for the environment counts. I hope that by participating in SORR 2016, we will appreciate Mother Nature more, and it will inspire us to do even more to save and protect our natural treasures.

Corporate Social Responsibility

PEKA has received fantastic support from the corporate sector. However, it takes a lot more resources to continuously educate and promote the Public on the importance of sustainable development without destroying our ecosystem. If you or your company want to find out more on how you can meaningfully help our environment, please contact Susee Ram (PEKA) at +60 16-201 0204.

Cycle of Life, Death And Hope

Cycle of Life, Death And Hope

Tribute Ride

On a bright sunny day, 200 cyclists, wearing white tops gathered at 3K Sports Complex in Subang Jaya to pay our respects to the late Shamsul Aizat Bin Mohd. who was killed while cycling on the Kesas Highway on 24th December 2015. This Ride Of Honour was initiated and organised by avid cyclist,Dave Ern, together with legendary ex-National Cyclist Dato Shaharudin Jaffar to offer moral support and some financial assistance to the grieving family. When I first heard the news of Shamsul’s tragedy on social media, I felt deeply saddened, and although, I did not know who Shamsul was, I immediately signed-up to join this tribute ride because rather than feeling helpless and frustrated, this was an opportunity for concerned cyclists to express our emotions in a positive manner, and to stand united as cyclists against the perils of cycling on public roads.

image

Safety Campaign

It was the first time, Shamsul had ridden on the highway on that fateful day, and it was to be his last ride. It is very sad to see a family man who was cut-down in the prime of his life, leaving behind a grieving young family. Is there a consolation that Shamsul died doing what he loved? It was too sudden, and too shocking to comprehend such human tragedy. Yes, cycling on public roads can be dangerously fatal, but so is driving a car or riding a motorbike. Is there a way to improve the safety for cyclists, so that cycling fatalities can be reduced?

image

In the presence of Shamsul’s wife, children and sister, Kelana Jaya MP, Wong Chen promised, “At the next Parliamentary Sessions in June 2016, I can help you (cyclists) and our community to bring-up the issue of road safety for cyclists at the national level in Parliament. Tell me what are the specific public safety issues that you want me to raise, and I will endeavour to help in my capacity as a Member Of Parliament.” Needless to say, MP Chen received a rousing cheer from the participants for giving hope to us and the family of Shamsul for a safer cycling future.

Handy Highways

image

Every week, hundreds of cyclists utilise the motorcycle lanes along the Kesas Highway and the Guthrie Corridor Expressway as their training ground for the following reasons:

– it is relatively safer for cyclists to share the bike lanes with motorbikes rather than sharing public roads with cars.

– the road surfaces are in relatively good condition.

image

image

– the lanes offer miles and miles of uninterrupted cycling.

Officially, the cyclists are not allowed anywhere along the highways, but the respective Highway Concessionaires turn a blind eye and take no preventive or punitive actions against cyclists using their Highways. Perhaps, the time is right for these Highway owners to acknowledge the existence of so many cyclists, and start taking steps to implement certain cycling safety measures such as putting-up safety signages warning motorists of the present of cyclists; better upkeep of the motorcycle lanes in terms of proper lighting and installing bicycle-friendly road grills. These upgrading measures need not be expensive, and if they can save the lives of cyclists such as Shamsul, then surely, it would be worth all the effort.

Organic Lifestyle

image

In our haste to embrace modernisation, we have destroyed much of our life-giving Rainforests and we have polluted our rivers, oceans and even the air that we breath. To counter these unsustainable commercialisation, I believe that environmental-friendly activities such as organic farming, waste recycling, solar-power supply, eco-tourism and even, cycling should be promoted to save our planet from such man-made disasters. However, to combat these global-warming problems, we must all take the necessary actions locally. Thus, when we support a seemingly trivial pastime like cycling, we are in fact taking one big step in reducing our heavy reliance on limited fossil fuel. Take my brother, Faisal Hussein who recently invested in a foldable bike in order to commute to work using public transport. His subsequent savings on petrol, toll and parking fees in Kuala Lumpur will pay-off for the new bike within one year. Moreover, biking to work has helped Faisal become a fitter person.

Cry For Help

image

I was touched to see so many cyclists and non-cyclists, from community leaders to ordinary citizens, turn-out for this unprecedented tribute ride to support the family of Shamsul. On such an emotional occasion, it was fitting to see a teary sister of Shamsul unselfishly pleaded, “We are here today not only for Shamsul, but to campaign for better road safety to benefit all cyclists and our community.”
