PJ Half Marathon 2016

PJ Half Marathon 2016

image

Long Running History

The oldest half marathon in KL is coming on 21st August 2016 – bigger & better – and you can expect a good crowd of elite and regular runners to be present, as well as family and fun runners too.

I can recall my first PJHM in 2012 when I ran together with wifey for her maiden half marathon. At that time, we started our run from outside the Kelana Jaya stadium, and finished the race inside the stadium. The route was interesting as it entailed running on the Federal Highways motorbike lane and tunnels, crossing back over the Federal on the overhead bridge at Sungai Way, running back to Subang Airport, and making a U-turn in front the old domestic Subang Domestic Airport, before heading back to Kelana Jaya.

Old & New PJ

Since two years ago, PJHM has shifted its venue to LAMAN MBPJ PETALING JAYA
(INFRONT DEWAN SIVIC MBPJ).

The current route will pass along major roads such as Jalan Gasing, Jalan Templer, Jalan Universiti, and even part of North Pantai Expressway. Like never before, runners will be able to cover a sizeable and important areas of old and new Petaling Jaya in one go. Refer to the 21km route map below for clearer details.

image

In the old days, runners were only given Finisher Tees when they complete a full marathon within cut-off time. Today, all 21km runners who complete the course within 4 hours will be spoilt with an exclusive finisher Tee, on top of the attractive event Tee (refer to photos)!

UltraBOOST Uncaged by Adidas

Trademark adidas innovation updates for high performance

·         Re-engineered upper delivers Uncaged look without compromise

·         The perfect expression of adidas’ dedication to meeting today’s athletes needs

KUALA LUMPUR, 22 JUNE 2016 – The wait is over. adidas embraces the future of running with the introduction of UltraBOOST Uncaged, a shoe inspired by fans and perfected by the innovation experts of adidas Running. Featuring a new adidas Primeknit upper, an internal support system and unique tiered lacing system, UltraBOOST Uncaged is engineered for maximum performance.

Originally created as an evolution of the greatest running shoe ever, UltraBOOST Uncaged continues the performance legacy of its predecessor with each element designed to collectively deliver an unparalleled running experience. To transform the Uncaged look into a performance vehicle, adidas adapted an internal midfoot skeleton using technology developed for the world’s top track athletes, delivering highly technical support and comfort with a rebellious look. A re-engineered adidas Primeknit upper provides flexible breathability and natural movement through each stride to complement an adaptive knit collar. A new multi-tiered lacing system allows runners to personalize style and fit, while specially-designed flat laces offer enhanced comfort and stability.

Alongside its new innovations, UltraBOOST Uncaged also maintains its signature UltraBOOST features. A supportive heel counter showcases the iconic embossed UltraBOOST name and keeps the foot locked in place for additional stability; a full length BOOST midsole provides industry leading Energy Return and a Stretchweb Continental Rubber™ outsole flexes naturally for superior traction with every step.

In addition to providing running greatness, UltraBOOST Uncaged represents the commitment adidas has to its fans and athletes. After global trendsetters first modified UltraBOOST by cutting off its cage, adidas embraced the movement and invited partners to create their own stylized versions of the shoe. Following this collaborative approach and in line with its dedication to delivering only the best for the athlete, adidas created its latest running innovation – a sleek new silhouette with the performance benefits that separate UltraBOOST from every other running shoe.

“UltraBOOST Uncaged combines the performance and innovation standard of UltraBOOST with the unique flair of our passionately creative fan base,” says Ben Herath, Vice President of Design for adidas Running. “adidas is committed to making athletes better through innovation and UltraBOOST Uncaged is another prime example of that pledge being met with the input of runners from around the world.”

adidas UltraBOOST Uncaged will be available to pre order on adidas.com.my beginning June 22 and in adidas performance stores from June 29 at RRP RM750.

The A-List of Running Events by Happy Runner

The A-List of Running Events by Happy Runner

What Is This All About?

With so many new running events and new event organisers appearing in the running scene recently, selecting a running event can be a daunting task, even for a die-hard running fan like me. In fact, I even wrote an article about it in The Star newspaper in which I give some key pointers on how to cherry pick your races and avoid the lemmings – http://www.star2.com/travel/malaysia/2016/04/30/how-choose-a-run-and-avoid-getting-conned/.

Furthermore, there is even an online running group set-up to warn runners against dud and dubious running events. Indeed, sharing our good and bad running experiences on social media, when done right, is one of the best ways in which we, the paying customers, can unite and exercise our collective customer’s rights.

For my part, I will time-to-time update online my newly launched “A-List Of Running Events” in which I provide a list of races and fun runs that meet or exceed MY expectations. The running events that make it on my A-list will have to meet certain key criteria such as, but not necessarily limited to them:

Offer “Fair-Pricing” which means that they charge a fee to runners which accurately reflects the goods and services being offered.

Offer “Best Administrative Practices” which means that they must manage the giving of event information, the handling of public enquiries, the handling of registration & payments, and the organising of race kit collection in a professional and efficient manner.

Offer “Best Technical Practices” which means that the onsite activities before, during, and post-race, such as, but not necessarily limited to runner’s safely, medical & emergency services, flag-off timing, adequate manpower, adequate water & water stations, traffic & course control, prize-giving, post-race refreshments, are handled professionally and efficiently.

As you can see from above, I am not concerned with the brand, design and quality of event T-shirts and medals unless their quality is so poor that it contravenes the above “Fair-Pricing” clause.

I am not concerned about the politics of the events either, such as, if foreign runners are given a raw deal, as long as the event organiser declares clearly their event terms and conditions before hand. I will leave it to other bloggers to take-up this issue on their own blog if they wish to do so.

Before We Start…

If you have been following my blogs and postings, and if you trust my judgement, then I am happy and excited to introduce to you today, for the very first time, the very first inductee to my “A-List’”. Drumroll, please. Although this is a new event and a new company, after conducting my own background research and looking at the pedigree of the team involved, they have satisfied my conditions enough to recommend them to you. However, life is never that simple, so before I proceed, let me qualify my recommendation by stating the following important disclaimers :

All information provided is as true and accurate as what I could personally assess at the time of print.

Unless otherwise specifically stated, all the information provided here are of my own personal views, and it may not necessarily reflect the views of the event company mentioned or any other third party.

Please note that there is no such thing as a “perfect event”, and even the most experienced race organiser can screw things up. Plus, as individuals, we all have our own preferences, likes and dislikes, therefore, what works for me, may be unacceptable for you. So, I recommend that you review recommendations from multiple source, but the final decision will be your doing and no one else. Whenever I have had a bad race experience, I learn from it and move on unless, it’s a matter of life and death. Groaning and moaning for long periods about spilt milk is pointless, and frankly, it’s quite irritating too. If you have a problem, try looking for a practical solution instead.

Feel free to share with me your happy running experiences. However, if, for whatever reason, you have any serious personal bad event experience, please take-up your grievances to the relevant parties, and do not expect me to solve your problems for you. In short, don’t shoot the messenger.

Here, We Go!

I am always on the lookout for new running events with the promise of new experiences. So, after making a few phonecalls and discreet enquiries, I have decided to register my wife and I for the 11km running category of the first-ever NBOS Run & Ride 2016. The race information is given below. More importantly, the reasons why I chose this one is because:

The Race Director, Parimalathevan Paramasivam or Prem has a distinguished working resume, and he is passionate and capable of orchestrating a quality run which will delight runners like my missus & me. More valuable insights, refer below to “Happy Runner Interview With M Sports RD, Prem”.

I am confident that Prem and his team will meet both my previous-mentioned “Best Administrative Practices” and Best Technical Practices” requirements. Furthermore, as you can see from the event information below, the race fee is FAIR.

After giving his best work at 21st Sports Century over 9 years, Prem has decided to step-up to the plate and start his own modest event company called M Sports. I have known Prem since I first started running back in 2011, and not only is Prem a true Gentleman, but his genuine passion of giving runners the best possible running experience over the years uplifts me. The least, I can do for him in return, is to be there at his inaugural event. More valuable insights, refer below to “Happy Runner Interview With M Sports RD, Prem”.

Happy Runner Interview With M Sports Race Director, Prem :-

Question: What are your most memorable, satisfying and challenging moments as GM of 21st Century Sports?

Prem: Most memorable moments are being team lead for the de-rig team of the routing dept for Le Tour de Langkawi, and being part of an elite team brought in to handle the 1st Xterra Malaysia, Telok Chempedak, Kunatan whereby we only had 4 days to devise, understand, absorb and improvise the execution plan. We did a great job. Obviously, the success of Putrajaya Night Marathon. It was my responsibility to ensure the growth & continuous success of Putrajaya Night Marathon operationally together with Mr.Anand & Mr.Nithi.

Most satisfying moments is to see runners finishing their runs safely at each and every run that I was privileged to oversee and be part of.

Question: What is the company vision/mission for M Sports & future plan?

Prem: M Sports would like to organize running events which creates a win-win scenario for the participants and the organizers.

Question: What Makes A Good Running Event?

Prem: The criteria for a good event are :

1.    Race being flagged off on time.

2.    The Running route is well marshalled to ensure the runner’s safety. The runners safety is given the utmost priority ahead of everything else.

3.    Drink station on the running route as well at the finish area having sufficient water.

4.    A proper medical plan to handle emergencies and injuries, if any.

Question: How will M Sports ensure quality events?

Prem: M Sports already has an well experienced race director in me. He he he. Together with my wonderful team who are also well experienced, we would be able to oversee to a smooth execution of the event.

Therefore M Sports will ensure to plan and execute the events based on the criteria mentioned above to ensure the quality of a running event.

We must note that people do not plan to fail but they simply fail to plan. The famous quote by Benjamin franklin – If you fail to plan then you are planning to fail.

Question: What Do You Feel & Hope To Achieve for your first event under M Sports.

Prem: As always, A good event whereby people can get together and share their happiness. A wonderful runner’s experience and also cyclist experience.

Live. Run. Learn.

Running is simple, and yet it offers infinite possibilities. Our running milestones are what keeps us going on this magical journey of self-discovery. Occasionally, we need to stop, and smell the roses dotted along the course. We can choose to see the drinking glass as half-empty or half-full: I choose the latter…

Bintulu 21km Run – NEW EVENT!

Bintulu 21km Run – NEW EVENT!

image

How About It?

Something about this new event had caught my attention :-

1/ Could it be because I have never been to Bintulu ever?

2/ Could it be because I like the look of the 21km route?

3/ Perhaps, I need a new adventure in a new land to give me a fresh perspective on running and push me out of my comfort zone.

Whatever the reasons, if everything goes according to plan, I might find myself running in East Malaysia for the first time. Certainly, it’s an exciting prospect which gives me something to jump-out of bed in the mornings.

Last but not least, I understand that although local company DNA Sports have organised runs in their backyard before, this will be the first 21km in Bintulu. Therefore, similar to the other new outstation half marathon events that I have joined in the past – the first Sungai Petani Half Marathon & the first Penang Tri-State HM – I will be happy to offer my moral support and encouragement to the local crew who will be naturally anxious to put on a great show for the visiting runners. As long as all the minimum safety requirements and stated runner’s entitlements are met and fulfilled, I don’t need any luxuries like branded T-shirts and fancy medals to appreciate a good run. Unfortunately, running events in the big cities are getting too commercial these days, and perhaps, a simple back-to-basics running is just what is needed.

See you in Bintulu soon….I hope

Superheroes Race 2016

Up, Up and Away!

image

Imagine being able to run in the middle of Kuala Lumpur with your favourite Superheroes or even, running dressed-up as Batman or Superman. Sounds like a fantasy computer game, right? No, it really happened, thanks to event organiser, NM Galaxy who recently orchestrated KL’s first Superheroes Race 2016 which gave thousands of adults and children the opportunity to enjoy a costume-themed fun run of 3km, 10km and 15km respectively.

image

The Superheroes Race is the brainchild of NM Galaxy CEO, Muazan Mohsin who explained, “We wanted to give runners a unique running experience, and we selected a Superheroes theme because everyone has their own heroes, in real-life or in fantasy.”

image

Judging by the huge leap in the event participants, from only 800 runners last year to a whopping 5,000 this year, it seems that Muazan’s novel idea has won over the fans of comic and movie action heroes.

Last year, I ran 10km in the inaugural Superheroes Race 2015 at Bukit Jalil, and this time, my wife Maryati and I decided to enroll ourselves in the new 15km category as it would help us prepare for the PJ Half Marathon scheduled later in August.

image

On a cool Sunday morning, the 15km runners were flagged off first at 6:30am from MATIC headquarters in Jalan Ampang, followed by the 10km and 3km runners.

image

Maryati & I gave the organisers high scores for  providing adequate drink stations and clear direction and distance markers all along the route. Furthermore, it is always extra special to be able to run in the heart of KL via Jalan Ampang, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, and passing famous landmarks of KLCC, KL Tower, Pudu Raya and Bukit Bintang.

image

The real fun started when the runners crossed the Finish Line and joined-in the post-race after party. After having collected their colourful medals, we were given free ice-cream and free flow of isotonic drinks for starters.

The Finish Area resembled a page straight out of Marvel & DC Comics with many runners dressed as Batman, Catwoman, Captain America, Iron Man, Superman, Transformer Robots, Wonder Woman and other notable action heroes. The gleeful children were entertained by a giant bubble act, and by the presence of Mister Potato and Mamee Monster Mascots. There were food trucks which offered the hungry participants nasi lemak, sandwiches, and fruit juices. The shiny and happy crowd mingled, took snapshots at the photo booths, ate, drank, joined the Zumba dance, and celebrated an eventful Sunday morning. The last act were the presentations of hampers and prizes for the winners of lucky draw, best costumes and top 3 Finishers in each category.

image

Looking at all the smiling faces, I gave this event two thumbs up for brightening the lives of so many children, and allowing us all to feel like a hero if only for one day.

Winning Isn’t Everything!

Winning Isn’t Everything!

image

The running community was deeply shocked and perplexed at the recent news that the two staples of Track and Field tradition, namely the 10,000 metres and the Full Marathon (42.195 km) had been dropped from 29th Sea Games Kuala Lumpur 2017. Granted that Malaysians athletes have been struggling to compete with the more consistent track athletes from Thailand and the Philippines, ever since we were the Sea Games overall champion back in 2001. However, voluntarily dropping these 2 major athletics events is akin to giving-up hope all together, and it sends a chilling message to our distance runners that their chosen 10 km and Full Marathon events have no priority at the National and International Levels. Moreover, without any perceived and comprehensive national plan to identify and groom young national distance runners to compete internationally, the future of distance runners looks dismal and bleak for Malaysia.

Ironically, distance running events are becoming increasingly popular among the public, as we can see from the thousands of runners who turn-up every weekend to participate in fun runs, races and marathons, organised across the country. In fact, no other event promotes and reflects the popularity of running as much as the Fit Malaysia nationwide campaign which easily attracts 5,000 runners to each of their 10 km running events held in every State since its inception in 2015 under the Sports Ministry.

By its opposing two decisions and actions vis-a-vis Fit Malaysia and Sea Games, our Sports Ministry is essentially saying that distance running is good for the community, but not good enough to be featured at the Sea Games 2017.

image

When we snub distance running openly today, we are telling future champions and their  coaches that they are not good enough to be the best. Yes, it is true that our runners are playing second best and even third fiddle to the International League of Runners, but to brutally turn our backs on these passionate athletes will create negative shockwaves in our small running nation. Even if our national and elite runners finish poorly in international competitions, we, as non-elite runners, will always respect and look-up to these homegrown elite runners as our own heroes because firstly, as runners ourselves, we know how much hard work, unwavering dedication and huge personal sacrifice are required to reach the top and compete with the best. Secondly, we appreciate the kind efforts of our elite runners who often go out of their way in order to personally inspire, motivate and guide us, mere mortals, to become better runners.

Who cares if our best Malaysian distance runners can never run as fast as the Kenyans?! In sports, instilling good ethical and moral values to the society is far more important than just winning. I cannot speak about other sports, but from my personal experience interacting with our local elite runners, I am proud of them for teaching and reminding us the following;

Sports is about improving oneself for the betterment of our community rather than to simply gain personal wealth and popularity.

Sports is about equality and fair play regardless of our differences in culture, race and economic background.

When the going gets tough, never give-up too easily. If we cannot run, we walk. If we cannot walk, we crawl.

How can we forget the unseen sacrifices made by our athletes, their coaches and parents over the many years in earning the right to represent the Jalur Gemilang on the world stage? To deny them an opportunity to compete for what they have trained for and dreamt about, seems unjustly cruel in the eyes of anyone with half a heart.

As one top elite runner, Edan Shah, confided to me, “Since I started my running journey a few years ago, I have had to finance my training and running activities myself with the help from a few private sponsors and friends.” Edan was clearly disappointed about the decision to omit his favourite distance of Full Marathon from the Sea Games 2017, “Obviously, it was a major setback, but I will continue to train hard, and hope that the Government reverses their decision.” Edan’s case is common among the many talented runners in Malaysia who have the potential to represent our country, but the lack of financial support and adequate expert guidance to develop their running talent has meant that they can go no further than perhaps win local races, barring the presence of any superior foreign competitors.

For the majority of the top part-time Malaysian runners, the income of their fulltime jobs, be it in the private or public sector, is needed to supplement the numerous costs and fees associated with striving to be a champion. There are no big prize monies or lucrative sponsorship deals available here. Now, as it stands, even their final incentive to represent the country is being taken-away. My educated guess is that the all-to-familiar dark forces of corruption, favouritism and cronyism are letting our athletes down, and the same can be said of our other sports too. I am not saying that everyone and everything associated with running Malaysian athletics are inept. However, there are enough of the few bad apples around to have seriously stifled and impeded the successful development and growth of national athletics for decades. Malaysia and her loyal citizens have the absolute right to expect better achievements in athletics. Malaysian tax-payers have the right to know exactly how every public cent is being spent to develop our sports to the highest level. Don’t you think so?

image

Meantime, on the ground, our handful of dedicated runners are continuing to strive for greatness, with or without the Sea Games, because they are driven by two things which money cannot buy – National Pride and Glory!

BOH Eco Trail Run 2016

Introduction

image

I was fortunate to be invited by BOH Tea Plantations to participate in their BOH Eco Trail Run which was hel
d in Bukit Cheeding, Selangor on the 28th May 2016.
Apart from being able to enjoy the fantastic setting of natural greenery with my running partner and wife, I was given the exclusive honour of interviewing the owner of BOH, Caroline Russell and their environmental partner Faizal Parish of Global Environment Centre.
To my utter delight, The Star newspaper was kind enough to publish my related article today which I hope will help create greater public awareness of the importance of protecting our peat forests and eco-system.

image

For my readers, I have added below the original uncut version of my story. The refined and edited version of the same story can be read in today’s The Star. Enjoy!

BOH-leh Run For Peat’s Sake!

image

As both, a nature lover and an avid runner, I am always on the lookout for running events which are eco-friendly and help promote the protection and preservation of Mother Nature’s limited natural resources. In the past, I have supported the Save Our Rainforest Run (SORR) 2014 & 2016, and KL International Earth Day Run 2016. The former event is organised annually by non-profit organisation PEKA (Pertubuhan Pelindung Khazanah Alam) Malaysia, and it involves running in selected local Forest Reserves and planting 1,000 tree saplings by the participants. While, the latter yearly event is organised by Asia World Events Sdn Bhd, and it aims to promote sustainable development and highlight climate change issues. So, when I heard that the BOH Tea Plantations was organising an exclusive 8km trail run to raise awareness on the importance of peatland preservation and the prevention of peat swamp forest fires in the Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve (KLNFR) to help curb issues that contribute to haze conditions in the country, my wife Maryati and I signed up for it without any hesitation. Furthermore, we were really excited at the prospect of running within the BOH Tea Plantation in Bukit Cheeding, Selangor, as well as exploring part of the neighbouring KLNFR for the first time.

image

On race day, my wife and I left our home in Shah Alam at 5:30am under a shroud of darkness, and we drove towards Banting, buoyed by the anticipation of discovering a new place at our doorstep. Our morning journey got eerie, as soon as we turned off the main road at the Taman Sri Cheeding intersection and started driving on an unlit and isolated stretch which was flanked on both sides by spooky silhouettes of palm trees. The further we drove up this unfamiliar territory, the more nervous we became. Luckily, we were soon followed by other cars which were taking participants to the same event venue. My wife Maryati quipped, “this is like the blind leading the blind,” and before I could answer her, we spotted the familiar figures of RELA volunteers directing us to the entrance of the tea plantation.

image

The gathering area was adjacent to the factory entrance, and by 6:30am, many of the runners were already cheerfully mingling, drinking freeflow BOH tea, visiting the display booths of the event partners, namely, Selangor Forestry Department, Global Environment Centre (GEC) and Jabatan Kemajuan Orang Asli (JAKOA). At the booths, we could learn more about their respective activities. I was delighted to see a group of Orang Asli women weaving baskets and some of their men were dressed in their traditional native gear, at the forefront of this event because too often, the Orang Asli (OA) communities are questionably left-out of social events in their own locality.

image

Later on, BOH CEO Caroline Russell told me that the local OA community was very much involved in this project because they had helped clear and mark the jungle trail, and the local OA had just as much to gain from protecting the precious eco-system upon which they critically depend for their livelihood.

image

I spent some time at the GEC booth where Coordinator Raj Rengasamy patiently explained to me the importance of peatland as a vital store of natural water supply which stores water during rainy season and releases water back to the rivers during the dry spells. Unfortunately, due to the El Nino phenomenal and global warming, the balance of nature is upset, and during the exceptionally dry spell, it is very easy for the peatland to catch fire which in turn causes the dreaded haze. I guess it is easy for us to blame others for the haze crisis when we ourselves do not really understand the root of the problem. Lest, we forget the challenges faced by people like Caroline Russell, GEC Head Faizal Parish, Selangor Forestry Department, the BOMBA, the local Orang Asli, and the Cheeding villagers who are living and working near the danger zones. Thankfully, their community has banded together under the capable guidance of Global Environment Centre in order to provide an early warning system to monitor and control the threat of forest fire. However, even with a workable blueprint, the successful mitigation of forest fires will depend significantly on the understanding and actions of the general public, like you and me. As Caroline pointed-out, “We must educate people to stop throwing cigarette butts out of passing cars which can easily lead to a raging forest fire”.

During the official ceremonies before the flag-off, Caroline presented a mock cheque for RM28,000 to GEC Faizal which is all the proceeds collected from the 600 generous participants.

This much-needed fund will be utilised by GEC for practical purposes like field-monitoring and assessing the threats of forest fire via their ongoing Peatland Forest Ranger Programme, as well as, organising training camps, talks and exhibition in participating schools, including two Orang Asli schools with the aim to increase the awareness of peat swamp forest conservation among the younger generation.

After a brief warm-up and stretching routine, a siren sound at 7:30am signaled the start of the run, and the chirpy runners made their way along the spacious dirt track. The surrounding landscape of orderly rows of endless tea bushels, interspersed with tall palm trees and coconut trees were so immaculately arranged that it reminded me of a beautiful English garden minus the colourful flowers! The spectacular views were simply mesmerising, and it was the sort of peaceful oasis that makes you forget all your troubles, and it would make a perfect getaway for stressful city folks who needed time-off to relax and recuperate.

Many runners took this rare opportunity to capture the scenery on their mobile cameras. The plantation air was so fresh and clean that it reminded me how poor the air quality in the cities were in comparison.

Halfway through our trail run, in single file, we entered the hallowed grounds of the peatland in KLNFR. Although, the trail was short, just being there, I felt emotional thinking about how this precious peatland has been reduced to only 900 hectares from 30,000 hectares over the years due to forest fires and development. The resulting level of destruction to the life-giving flora and fauna was too much for me to fathom. “Are we doing too little too late?”, I wondered. Whatever, the case, we must stay strong and not lose hope because by default, our efforts today can make a difference to the helpless creatures and plants that inhabit the forest. By just participating in this event, I no longer felt like a useless bystander, but rather, I was actually doing something positive for our natural environment.

imageAs soon as we exited the restricted area of the peat forest, there was a coconut station where we could quench our thirst with freshly cut coconuts grown on the estate itself which were aptly dubbed the “BOH-BOH NUT”.

When we reached the finish line, we were presented with a medal, and at the refreshment booth, we washed down the offered snacks of banana and sweet buns with a refreshing cup of BOH tea – what else!

image

The grand finale was an entertaining native dance performed by the Orang Asli dance troupe. It was a perfect way to cap, a perfect morning.

image

As I left the venue, I could not believe that I had witnessed and learned so much about our environment in such a short time, and it gave me more reason to love our beautiful country.

Last but certainly, not least, I must acknowledge and thank the following parties for such a rewarding experience;

Caroline & BOH Plantation for being the perfect host and allowing us to play in their perfect garden. For more information, visit http://www.boh.com.my

Faizal & Global Economic Centre for educating us on the importance of peat land preservation. For more information, visit http://www.gec.org.my

The Selangor Forestry Department for giving us special access to the Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve.

Gus Rider Recommended Event
My friends at Straco Ventures are back, after their recent success with Paya Indah Combo Ride & Run 2016, with this exciting KOM cycling event which offers roadies & MTB riders the magnificent natural backdrop of Kuala Kubu Baru & Fraser Hill. Many seasoned riders have ploughed this scenic route before, but on race day, the whole stretch of road will be totally off-limits to motorists which means we can ride up all the way to the Fraser Hill Clock Tower safely and carefreely.

Look Who’s In Town – Lucozade Sports!

Look Who’s In Town – Lucozade Sports!

(2) 'Fuel Your Performance' by Lucozade Sport
Rodney Tan, Head of Marketing, Suntory Beverage & Food Malaysia shares during the Q&A session while (from far left) Dr Mahenderan Appukutty, Edan Syah, Lee Hon Tong and Alex Au-Yong look on

Personal Lucozade History: During my schooldays in United Kingdom, Lucozade was my favourite drink as an anytime pick-up drink and to quench my thirst during and after sports. At that time, there were no orange flavour, and there was only the original flavour which carried a unique taste, unlike any other sports drink.

30 Years Later: Naturally, I am pleasantly surprised that Lucozade Sports has finally made its way to our shores, be it, in its more palatable orange flavour. Perhaps, when Malaysians familiarise themselves with the brand, we will be able to enjoy the time-honoured Lucozade original flavour or other fruity flavour apart from orange.

Thirst-Quenching Aid: Indeed, Malaysian Athletes and Sportsmen will benefit from this introduction of a new quality source of Sports drink. With the boom in mass sporting events such as Cycling and Running, Lucozade Sport’s arrival is both timely and welcoming.

LUCOZADE SPORT™ KICKSTARTS ‘FUEL your PERFORMANCE’ Campaign to educate and support dreams of citizen athletes
No. 1 isotonic drink in the United Kingdom hosts running clinic and introduces four Malaysians as ‘Fuel Your Performance’ Advocates

The Lucozade Sport™ ‘Fuel Your Performance’ Campaign got off to an energetic start recently at its first running clinic with Pacesetters Athletic Club, SMART Athletics Club and Tadonamo Triathletes. The exclusive event was the latest in a series of campaign activities designed to engage with Malaysian runners and an ongoing effort to bring its scientifically-proven formula to more than 1 million Malaysians through ground-level events and sponsorship of popular events such as the recent Reebok Spartan Race. Participants had the opportunity to learn from seasoned runner Edan Syah and exercise & sports nutritionist Dr Mahenderan Appukutty, Faculty of Sports Science and Recreation from Universiti Teknologi MARA who shared their experience on training and nutrition for sports enthusiasts.

* Dr Mahenderan Appukutty, exercise & sports nutritionist, Faculty of Sports Science and Recreation from Universiti Teknologi MARA
* Edan Syah, 'Fuel Your Performance' Advocate & the fastest marathon runner in Malaysia for 2016
* Lee Hon Tong, Regional General Manager, Suntory Beverage & Food Malaysia, Singapore & Hong Kong
* Mohamed Allie Helmy, 'Fuel Your Performance' Advocate and army corporal-triathlete champion
* Alex Au-Yong, 'Fuel Your Performance' Advocate and marathoner-XtraMiler

“Helping dedicated athletes to achieve their performance goals is an important brand value for Lucozade Sport™. By supporting accomplished athletes and inspiring others to achieve their own dreams, we are sharing resources, skills and knowledge that encourage Malaysians to lead more active lives,” said Lee Hon Tong, Regional General Manager, Suntory Beverage & Food Malaysia, Singapore & Hong Kong. “We embarked on this campaign to reach out to Malaysian citizen athletes from all walks of life and our ‘Fuel Your Performance’ Advocates are exceptional individuals who have accomplished many goals in addition to the demands of work and family. They serve as inspirational role models for aspiring runners to kick-start their own dream, because they are living proof that dreams can indeed become a reality.”

In addition to sharing his personal training strategy, Edan also said, “It has taken me eight years and nine marathons for me to realise my true potential as a runner – it’s a long process but I believe it’s never too late to start as long as you’re willing to train hard. By sharing my experiences and life lessons from being a ‘citizen runner’, I hope to inspire the younger generation and see Malaysian marathoners in the 2020 Olympics!”

As April is also celebrated as Nutrition Month Malaysia with the tagline ‘Eat Smart, Get Fit & Feel Great’, the clinic was also a fitting opportunity to stress the importance of eating right for energy and performance.

“High-performance athletes require a dietary plan that’s tailored to support and enhance their training. This includes consuming an appropriate amount of protein to help to build, maintain and repair muscle tissue. Hydration and energy are also essential factors for runners as stores of carbohydrates in the body get used up,” explained Dr Mahenderan as he provided structured guidelines designed to help participants fuel their runs with the right nutrition and hydration.

To maintain consistent energy levels, approximately 30-60g of carbohydrates are needed every hour – this would be equivalent to 1-2 bottles of Lucozade Sport™ for each hour of racing. Its science-based formulation of electrolytes and carbohydrates is specifically designed provide enhanced hydration to fuel athletes during prolonged exercise.

To attest to the importance of training, nutrition and hydration, the four ‘Fuel Your Performance’ Advocates are accomplished athletes who have achieved numerous accolades.  Their examples further advocate the importance of achieving one’s dream:

Edan Syah started running eight years ago. The self-coached runner qualified for the 119th Boston Marathon 2015 and finished with a time of 2:41:55, and became the fastest and the youngest Malaysian to have run the Boston Marathon! At the Tokyo Marathon 2016, he achieved a personal record of 2:38:55 and is now ranked as the fastest marathon runner in Malaysia for 2016. Edan aspires to be the youngest and fastest Malaysian to complete the 6 World Marathon Majors (WMM)  under 2hours 45minutes by 2018.
Mohd Amran bin Abdul Ghani has worked as a fire fighter since 2001. In 2014, this dedicated athlete came in first in the IRONMAN 70.3 at Putrajaya and again at IRONMAN Langkawi with a time of 10:15; at both races he was crowned Best Malaysian. This comes on the heels of his accomplishments in Powerman Malaysia where he came in first in his age category for 5 consecutive years, from 2009-2013. Amran’s dream is to race in international triathlons all over the world.
Mohamed Allie Helmy is a corporal in the Armed Forces who keeps fit because of passion, not only because of his line of work. He was the champion for the Port Dickson International Triathlon, Kedah International Duathlon 2015 and 113 Desaru Triathlon; and came in close as the second Malaysian in IRONMAN Langkawi 2015. Helmy aspires to race in the IRONMAN World Championships in Kona, Hawaii next year.
Alex Au-Yong wanted to channel his passion for long-distance running into something tangible for communities in need, so he created the XtraMile Run, Malaysia’s first-of-its-kind 100km charity run. The first event in 2011 raised RM111,000 for StART Academy, and the subsequent run in 2013 raised RM165,000 for the Dignity for Children Foundation. For 2016, his goal is to raise RM500,000 to ignite community involvement, provide education on holistic nutrition to children.

These Advocates embody what it means to reach for their dreams, and Lucozade Sport™ now invites other Malaysian runners to share their hopes and dreams as well via myLucozade@suntory.com.

A trusted brand since 1927, Lucozade Sport™ continues to hydrate and engage with Malaysian athletes at high-profile sporting events. Find out more about the ‘Fuel Your Performance’ campaign at http://www.lucozadesport.com  or http://www.youtube.com/lucozade.
