Recounting Kedah Century Ride 2016

Recounting Kedah Century Ride 2016

Event: Kedah Century Ride 2016

Distance: 160km

Date: 19th November 2016

Venue: Menara Alor Setar, Kedah

Editor’s Note

The spectacular views of endless and vibrant green paddy fields of Kedah are truly breathtaking. This beautiful setting was my inspiration as I joined 260 other riders to test our endurance limits over a new 160km route.

I was looking forward to a great aerobic workout, and I was excited to explore more of Kedah’s  countryside on two wheels.

With any full-fledged century ride, anything can happen on the great open roads, and I never know exactly what to expect on race day. I guess that’s what makes this challenge more interesting, and being alert and ready to face any obstacle along the way, be it physical, mental or external factors, could be the difference between a successful or failed mission.

Second Time Around

The venue of the inaugural Kedah Century Ride in 2015 was the Paddy Museum which was located next to the majestic Gunung Keriang.

This year, the race venue was shifted to the iconic Menara Alor Setar which is very convenient because it’s smack in the middle of town and it’s surrounded with many retail shops and hotels. Of course, the swanky Aman Sentral shopping mall there, which was also the kit collection point, is a great place to chill and watch the locals pass-by over a cup of coffee.

Epic New Route

The highlight of last year’s route was the crosswinds of the flat plains, watching people in the dry harvested paddy fields flying ornate kites, and stopping at roadside vendors for refreshing drink of fresh local sugar cane.

This year, the route was totally different and it took us pass Kepala Batas, Jitra, Changing, Kuala Nerang, Pokok Sena, and Langgar.

After the 7am flag-off under Alor Setar Tower, we cycled passed several landmarks such as the grand Zahir Mosque (Kedah’s state mosque), the palatial Istana Anak Bukit and Sultan Abdul Halim Airport.

In 30 minutes, we found ourselves in the middle of luscious paddy fields which were filled with water from the irrigation canals. This picturesque and flat roads took us to Jitra Town.

After 30km, we headed to Chulang and the elevation really started to build-up when we reached Bukit Wang or known as Bukit Lenguh by the locals. The first half of the route was technically easier because there were less climbs, and the morning temperatures were cooling. In contrast, the second part had really tested my physical fortitude and patience.

From Racing To Touring

My Elliptigo bike and my strength were no match for all the super fast roadies who left me behind in just 15 minutes! Nevertheless, I was determined to complete the official 166 km distance, and with no support crew or sweeper trucks available, failure was not an option.

My ultimate target was to NOT get lost, and to record the local sights, sounds and smells which were unique to this region. Afterall, it isn’t often I get the chance to explore the real countryside of Kedah, and so, I wanted to make the most of this opportunity.

Favourable Factors

What really helped me to persevere alone, in unfamiliar surroundings, were the awe-inspiring sights of the beautiful countryside and the remarkably friendly villagers who had encouraged me with their kind gestures and warm smiles.

Moreover, the existence of sufficient and highly visible course markers throughout the whole route allayed my fears of getting lost. As I had discovered before in previous Century Rides, there’s nothing worse nor more demotivating than wasting precious energy cycling in the wrong direction.

Best Bits

In the end, it took me a record-breaking 12 hours to reach the Finish Line compared to 7 hours in the previous year. Funnily, I enjoyed the ride more this year. Maybe, it was because the new route had better attractions. Maybe, it was because I had stopped worrying about my timing and began riding in the moment. The answer can be found in my favourite parts of the ride such as :-

The panoramic views of luscious greenery of waterlogged paddy fields and natural forests.

The welcoming and generous nature of the friendly villagers.

The good conditions of the road.

The quiet country roads and vibrant flora and fauna.

The coolness of the morning breeze.

The fresh air and shade offered by the tree lined roads and Bukit Wang.

The quaint farms, rubber estates and palm oil plantations were a nice change to the impersonal concrete factories.

The scenes of village life.

The comprehensive and distinctive route markers.

The pre-race Pasta Dinner at Fuller Hotel gave the participants an opportunity to meet and mingle over a great buffet spread.

The Great Escape

On hindsight, the Kedah Century Ride 2016 was the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of my typically busy modern city lifestyle. Frankly, living in a noisy concrete jungle is very stressful, and I was just happy to unwind and relax in the serenity of a slow-paced Kampung Life…

My Go To Virtual Charity Ride

Virtual Charity Ride by Cycling Events.my

Editor’s Note

If you’re looking to join Virtual Ride, then I recommend this one because the Team at Cycling Events.my run a tight ship, dispensing a reliable and efficient service to their registered virtual riders. Moreover, knowing that part of the proceeds will go to a worthwhile charity makes it a sweet ride🚴

Of course, it is highly plausible that you may not even know what a ‘virtual ride’ is! If you want to know what it’s all about, the Frequently Asked Questions below should give you a good idea.

Incidentally, I joined the VR 2016 October/November Edition because RM10 from each participant will be going to my favourite NGO, PEKA. For my troubles, I had received a snazzy glow-in-dark medal (see photo above).

F.A.Q.

A cycling event without physical date & location.

First of all, we CyclingEvents.my are excited to bring to you a brand new concept of a cycling event in Malaysia. While the concept is totally new in Malaysia, in the U.S. however, it has been there for quite some time.

What is a Virtual Charity Ride?

Put it in simple terms, A virtual charity ride is a cycling charity event without a physical date and physical location. Riders from anywhere can support the charitable cause by registering for the event and cycle the distance preset by the organiser, anywhere and anytime at their convenience.

Why do this instead of a ‘normal’ charity ride?

While a traditional charity ride promotes healthy lifestyle and create awareness for charitable causes, the monetary costs involved in organising such physical event (infrastructure setup, man power and etc) are high and sometimes not justifiable. A Virtual Ride can avoid all these unnecessary costs, so that these funds can be channeled into a much more useful mean – to the charitable cause itself.

Besides, without a physical location and date, there are no physical boundaries. More riders throughout Malaysia can join for the ride and contribute to the charitable causes, at the same time create an even bigger awareness of the charity cause. From a rider’s point of view, no physical location means riders need not to bear the travelling or accommodation costs of participating in an event.

How does a Virtual Charity Ride work?

Before a Virtual Charity Ride commences, we will announce the charity cause or charity organisation that we are working with. We will try to make it as clear as possible where the funds collected are allocated to (in which project, which particular individual and etc).

The registration for the ride will normally open for 2 month period. During this period you register a Virtual Charity Ride like a normal cycling event on http://www.cyclingevents.my, and then ride the distance set by us (normally 20-30KM). You may ride more than the preset distance, but not less. You can choose to ride anywhere, whether its on-road or off-road, and anytime, whether its day or night. You may even consider to submit the distance that you have cycled for other events to us.

Once you have done the distance, submit your proof to us and we will courier the finisher medal of the ride to you.

How to prove that I have cycled the distance set by CyclingEvents.my?

To prove that you have cycled the preset distance, you can use a Cycling Mobile App to record your distance and send to us. We generally prefer 2 types of Mobile Apps for the ride record: 1. Strava  2. Map My Ride

However, if you use any Mobile App other than the two mentioned above, we are happy to accept as long as we can clearly identify that you have cycled that distance.

To submit you ride record, you can copy and paste your ride link URL to our Virtual Charity Ride Facebook Group and write your name and the Charity Ride that you are joining.

What is the funding allocation of the fees?

We normally allocate RM10.00 – RM15.00 from each participant fee to the charity cause, depending on the number of participants (the higher the participation rate, the lower the costs per medal, the more we can allocate for charity). The balance is to cover the medal production costs, medal courier and delivery to riders, transaction costs in event registration, and administrative costs in handling the administrative work of the event (mainly for distance verification & medal packing before delivery to riders)

How long do I have to wait for my finisher medal to arrive?

Your medal will arrive approximately 30days after the registration closing period of the Virtual Charity Ride.

The reason why it takes so long is that we only place orders with our suppliers after registration closes. We make sure that the number of medals that we order is exactly what is needed, so that we don’t overspend and can channel the most funding to the charitable cause.

Who can join a Virtual Charity Ride?

Whoever that wants to cycle and work out some sweat!

In general, anyone can join the ride. For those who are new to cycling, not able to cycle long distance yet, or not ready to ride in a mass cycling event, this ride is definitely the most suitable for you. We set our distance in particular to be between 20-30KM to be eligible for the finisher medal, so that its achievable for the newbies as well.

For seasoned riders, we are more than happy if you cycle a Century Ride to submit your Ride Record. The more the merrier!

How frequent will CyclingEvents.my organise Virtual Charity Ride?

Our plan is to make Virtual Charity Ride a bi-monthly event. We will identify and work with different charity partners to promote and raise awareness of a particular cause. It could be for natural disaster relief donation, or for a particular individual in need, or for an NGO to raise fund for a project and etc.

Are the participant fees paid for Virtual Charity Ride tax deductible?

Unfortunately no. We are not registered as a Tax Deductible N.G.O. in The Registry of Societies Malaysia, therefore are not eligible for tax deduction on the donation received.

Join our VCR Community at our Facebook Group.

🚴REDISCOVER KEDAH CENTURY RIDE 2016

🚴REDISCOVER KEDAH CENTURY RIDE 2016

📝EDITOR’S NOTE

Last year, the newly launched Kedah Century Ride (KCR) gave cyclists a new and memorable experience as I described in My Article in The Star newspaper.

This year’s KCR was originally planned to include a 30km leg inside Thailand, but the sudden demise of King Bhumipol recently had laid to rest those plans out of respect for the people of Thailand.

Fortunately, the show will go on, and I believe that KCR 2016 will offer a memorable ride through the spectacular Kedah landscapes of paddy fields, mountains, forest, traditional malay villages, and not forgetting, Bandar Alor Setar.

Whether you are cycling competitively or just for personal satisfaction, I hope that you have a safe and enjoyable last century ride of 2016…

EXCERPTS from my Previous Preview :-

“…Kedah Century offers an unforgettable ride through striking green rice fields, water canal crossings and the local cross-winds of the flat plains will test the cyclist’s riding strength and determination. Indeed, there are many interesting cultural traditions in Kedah such as rice-growing and kite-flying which forms part of the rich tapestry of our beautiful countryside – there’s no other ride like it!..”

Training For OSIM Sundown Marathon Penang 2016

SUNDOWN TOUCHDOWN IN PENANG

Many avid and seasoned runners have high regards for the Sundown Marathon brand which never fails to draw-in the crowd of runners seeking thrilling running extravaganza.

To be able to experience Sundown Marathon on the enchanting Penang Island for the first time is an exciting prospect.

For Penang and Northern Runners, having this famous marathon in their backyard is a testament to the maturity of the local running community.

For the KL and Outstation Runners, this kind of trip gives the right excuse for a spot of “Runcation” in order to make the most of their trip by adding some sightseeing and food hunting activities to their travel plans.

Before we can enjoy the eating, the sightseeing and the race, it is vital that we prepare and train adequately beforehand.

🏃TRAIN FOR IT

On a weekly basis, I will cover about 50km distance and train 3-4 times which will also include some key speed drills and hill works.

In addition, I will do some resistance training to strengthen my muscles and legs, as well as  frequent stretching routines.

🍉EAT FOR ENERGY

Two weeks before race day, I will cut down on meat dishes, and eat more variety of vegetables and fruits. Moreover, eating nutritiously means consuming less of processed, sugary and fried foods.

Closer to race day, I will avoid spicy or untested food, and I will drink 2-3 litres of water. I will save bingeing on my Penang favourite dishes until after the run is over.

🌔SATURDAY NIGHT

I am really looking forward to meeting up with my Penang running buddies and running along  the idyllic coastal route. Hopefully, the night will welcome the marathoners with a timely cool sea breeze…

IRONMAN Malaysia 2016 – Press Release

PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Triple treat for Riesler, breakthrough for Croneborg in Malaysia

It proved a breakthrough for one and a hat-trick for another on Malaysia’s stunning Langkawi Island

LANGKAWI, 12 NOVEMBER, 2016 – Popular Thailand-based Swede Fredrik Croneborg grabbed his breakthrough victory in winning IRONMAN Malaysia on the stunning island of Langkawi.

Croneborg had to withstand a storming run from Brazilian Thiago Vinhal to claim his first IRONMAN win in 8:39:11.

In the women’s race, it proved a record hat-trick of wins at IRONMAN Malaysia for Germany’s Diana Riesler who made her move late on the bike and proved too strong on the run in the Malaysian heat.

Breakthrough Victory for Likeable Swede

Fredrik Croneborg has made Asia his home – and cemented that with his breakthrough victory in IRONMAN Malaysia in Langkawi.

He became enamoured with Asia after initially working in China as an e-project manager, and for some years now has been based in Phuket.

The diminutive Swede has been a regular figure on the burgeoning Asian IRONMAN scene, chalking up wins and podium finishes over the IRONMAN 70.3 distance to go with runner-up performances at IRONMAN Malaysia and IRONMAN Taiwan last year.

He found himself four minutes behind Harry Wiltshire (GBR) and Balazc Csoke (HUN) out of the water, and was still the same distance back at 70kms on the bike. But he pushed hard from that time, catching the leading bunch at 130kms. He was not content with the catch, forcing his way through the pack with Jeremy Jurkiewicz (FRA) to open a vital 1:30 advantage on to the marathon.

Croneborg, who had limited running build-up due to an injury and the recent birth of his first child, managed to build a two minute buffer on the field after 10kms as the runners started to move. Brazil’s Thiago Vinhal moved past the tiring Jurkiewicz into second place but he eventually ran out of real estate.

Croneborg won in 8:39:11 to celebrate in style, with Vinhal 33 seconds behind to register his first IRONMAN runner-up, after finishing third at Fortaleza last year.

The fastest run came from Japan’s Kaito Tohara who zoomed home to pick up third ahead of an impressive effort from Daniil Sapunov (UKR) who worked hard early on the run, but paid the price over the final kilometres as he chased his first IRONMAN podium.

“It feels incredible,” says Croneborg. “There are a lot of reasons for that. It’s my first IRONMAN title and after doing two second places, it is great. It got so close at the end and my preparation has not been optimal. All these things together and with the pressure before the race, it’s amazing. I felt a lot of crowd support out there from spectators and other competitors. It is my favourite race.”

“I lost the front group on the swim but my bike was good enough to catch that group and once I did, I managed to get away with Jeremy. That was the key moment given how Thiago ran,” he added.

Triple Treat for Riesler in Malaysia

Diana Riesler likes to challenge herself, trying for her third consecutive win in the heat and humidity of Malaysia, which has never been done before.

The German was handily placed third out of the water, a minute down on Japan’s Maki Nishiuchi but ahead of the key competitors Laura Siddall (GBR) and Mareen Hufe (GER).

Riesler worked her way quickly to the lead on the bike, and by the 70kms mark she had already stretched her advantage to 3:41 on Siddall and Hufe; 5:30 by 120km and she was off the bike with a 6:31 buffer on Siddall and 6:57 on Hufe.

The German gradually built on that considerable advantage to be 6:42 ahead of Siddall at 10kms of the marathon and eight minutes over Hufe at 25kms. She ran a 3:21:38 marathon in the heat and then through rain to arrive home for her third straight win in Malaysia with 9:25:34.

“I think I was third after the swim, and then I took over the lead on the bike after 30 kilometres. From then on, I stayed at the front. I’m just happy that I could win, and come back to Malaysia”.

Hufe continued her impressively consistent career with another podium to go with her runner-up at Brazil earlier this year and seventh in New Zealand. It was her seventh podium in the last four years.

Siddall enjoyed a solid day throughout – fourth out of the swim, second off the bike and just edged back to third overall for an excellent day in the office. It was her first podium in a full IRONMAN event.

FRIENDSHIP RUN & PASTA PARTY 2016

FRIENDSHIP RUN & PASTA PARTY 2016

EDITOR’S NOTE

🇲🇾Standard Chartered Kuala Lumpur Marathon 2016 introduced its first ever FRIENDSHIP RUN & PASTA PARTY on 6th August 2016 at Dataran Merdeka as part of their build-up to the actual race on the following day.

I was lucky to be invited as a representative of the SCKLM 2016 Pacer Team, and as a Media Guest or was it, Media Gus?

✍In this short article, I give my interpretation of this new mini gala event, and try to answer some of these questions – What Was It All About? Was It Well Received By The Runners? Will It Be A Permanent Fixture Of SCKLM? Enough with the questions, already!

WHAT’S THE POINT?

🇨🇭According to Race Director Rainer Biemans, the idea behind this FRIENDSHIP RUN & PASTA PARTY 2016 is to foster better comradeship among the participating runners.

Rainer beamed, “This concept is commonplace in overseas Marathons, but it is a new practice in Malaysia, and we hope that it will catch on here too.”. 📹WATCH INTERVIEW WITH RAINER.

INTERNATIONAL GATHERING

▶On the morning of SCKLM 2016, a total of 215 Friendship Runners gathered in the Hospitality Tent on the grounds of Dataran Merdeka. The participants consisted of a mix of local and foreign runners from countries such as Hong Kong, Holland and Japan. Some of them were dressed in colourful and cheerful costumes, and the mood was exciting and chirpy.

A trio of running buddies from Hong Kong told me that they were glad to take part in this Friendship Run because it gave them the chance to find-out how to get to the race venue from their hotel. Plus, these pragmatic runners wanted to adjust their bodies to running in our humid climate before the race itself.

WHITE BALLOONS

As a symbol of Peace, every runner was given WHITE balloons with which to run.

As a symbol of International Friendship, each balloon had a flag of a different country on it.

The trailing balloons certainly added a fun party tone to the scene. I wondered how long it had taken someone to painstakingly cut-off pictures of all the countries of the world, and then stick it on every single balloon. The stick-on flags were too small to be noticed from 1 metre away. On hindsight, it would have been more practical to just print the universal symbol of peace, a white dove, on all of the balloons, instead of hard-to-spot flags, because it doesn’t matter which country we belong, we are all still citizens of the world!

CAREFREE RUN

The Friendship Run was held to coincide with the KL Car Free Morning (KLCFM) event, and so, our band of merry runners started from the usual starting point at DBKL (Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur) Headquarters on Jalan Raja Laut and headed leisurely to Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan Ampang.

With our distinguishing white balloons floating above our heads, we ran happily alongside the KLCFM participants who consisted a mix bunch of cyclists, runners, skateboarders, rollerbladers and strollers of all ages.

🎠Everyone was in a playful mood, relaxing, basking in the Sun, and making the most of the road closures.

BOLD IS BEAUTIFUL

After our easy run, we headed back to the Hospitality Tent for some refreshments, and to exchange more running anecdotes.

INTERVIEWED TV Celebrity Reuben who had trained extensively under Coach Mark Williams for the past 3 months in preparation for his Full Marathon debut. Reuben’s physical transformation had been nothing short of amazing, especially to himself. Furthermore, Reuben could not believe the massive support and encouragement which he had received from his friends and followers throughout his incredible transformation from ZERO TO HERO!

For any new runners like Reuben who have taken the pledge to properly train and face a full marathon, they are already Champions, and to go ahead and actually complete 42km will be the icing on the cake. At the same time, there will be many more virgin marathoners who won’t make it to the Finish Line. For them, they should try harder the next time because the only failure in running is quitting when there is an opportunity for them to learn from their mistakes and GROW STRONGER.

MAKANTHON MANIACS

I am not sure who invented carbo-loading, but I know that Malaysian Runners have interpreted this fueling ritual in our own way. Since food is our favourite subject, we even greet our friends with the common phrase, “Sudah makan?” (Have You Eaten?).

In fact, we don’t really care what we carbo-load on. We ignore the professional advice to load-up with pasta in the right quantities, and instead, we use carbo-loading as an excuse to stuff ourselves silly with the hope that we can run-off the extra calories.

🍝Of course, at this Pasta Party, there was a selection of foods meant for proper carbo-loading. There was a big smorgasbord of Spaghetti, Beef Balls, Baked Fish, Grilled Chicken, Vegetable Soup, Salad Bar, Cheese Board, Yogurt and Fresh Fruits galore.

🇦🇺The Emcee was an accomplished runner himself, and he was doing his best to motivate and inspire us as we ate our last meal.

🇯🇵I met a couple of Japanese Runners who were fans of Standard Chartered Marathons worldwide, and they were happy to share with me their overseas running anecdotes.

The Pasta Party started at 6pm, and by 8pm, most of the guests headed home or to their nearby hotel rooms for a good night’s rest.

KEEP CALM

For me, the day before a full marathon is usually spent just relaxing and not doing anything too taxing. Normally, I will calm my nerves by doing something unrelated to running because I don’t want to overload my mind nor suffer from paralysis due to over analysis.

It’s natural to feel nervous before a marathon, and having a predictable routine to preoccupy a runner’s mind can help take the steam off some of the inevitable pressure.

STAY POSITIVE

💭The mind is probably a runner’s biggest asset during the last few kilometres of a marathon when the body is drained out of all energy and wants to shut down. Having the right motivation, inspiration and mindset can lift a runner’s spirit when the going gets tough and when you would rather take a taxi home.

🌐Even the world’s leading sports brand have acknowledged the importance of mental toughness among sportsmen by using catchy advertising slogans such as “Impossible Is Nothing”, “Find Your Strong”, etc.

So, what has all this got to do with the  Friendship Run & Pasta Party event?

Well, the value of the Friendship Run & Pasta Party is not just in the physical running an eating part, but its NET WORTH is in providing an unique opportunity for passionate runners, from far and near, to support and lift each other’s spirits through the candid exchange of our personal HUMAN STORIES of triumphs and failures.

🌏As I made my way home, I felt newly REJUVENATED & READY for the run of my life, safe in the universal knowledge that we, runners, always have each other’s backs…

The strong partnership seamlessly combines OSIM’s mission of inspiring well-being with the Sundown Marathon’s aim of creating an all-inclusive fun and healthy environment for families and friends to enjoy as they run through the night.

“The spirit of the marathoner resonates with OSIM because we believe in challenging your spirit to do your best. The OSIM Sundown Marathon 2017 is particularly exciting as it will be running in Penang and Taipei. It makes our partnership more significant as Malaysia and Taiwan are two of the key countries where OSIM is present. This shows the entrepreneurial drive of the organisers in growing the sport and as a Singapore brand who has gone before, we are happy to help promote Sundown to these new markets,” said Mr Ron Sim, Founder, Chairman and CEO of OSIM International Pte Ltd.

“We have been planning to go regional for quite some time, and with Sundown celebrating its 10th year, it is timely for us to go abroad to reach out to more people in different countries. The Singapore edition has attracted a significant number of foreigners, an indicator of the popularity of the race. Specifically, 20% of our overseas runners fly in from Malaysia to run in Sundown Marathon Singapore. We are aware that Penang has a very large running community and are excited to bring the race there to allow more Malaysians to experience the magic of night racing. We’re also grateful to OSIM for lending their continuous support, as this marks a major milestone for Sundown,” said Adrian Mok, Managing Director of HiVelocity Events, the organiser of Sundown Marathon.

Touted as Asia’s largest night marathon, the annual run has seen a steady increase in its participation. Its ninth edition in 2016 saw 27,500 runners run through the night – a five-fold increase from its humble beginnings in 2008. The 2016 race in Singapore featured over 40% of overseas race entrants from countries such as Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan and China – underscoring the appeal of the event as well as the thriving sports tourism industry in Asia.

About Sundown Marathon

Organised by Singapore-based company HiVelocity Events, Sundown Marathon injected a jolt of energy into Singapore’s running scene when it became the nation’s first night marathon in 2008, and the event hasn’t looked back since. From a humble attendance of just over 6,000 in the first year, Sundown Marathon’s registration is expected to reach 30,000 in 2017, making it Asia’s largest night marathon once again.

Being the nation’s first night race to be nominated twice for the prestigious International Sports Event Management (ISEM) Awards and, more recently, Marketing Events Awards, for the Best Sport-Oriented Event, Sundown Marathon has fearlessly gone where other running events fear to tread.

Sundown gave running fanatics the perfect opportunity to test their limits with Singapore’s first ultra-marathon lasting through the night in 2008. In 2012, Sundown Marathon moved into the city and became the nation’s first night running event to flag off at Nicoll Highway. Since 2013, Sundown put on a show under the stars at the renowned F1 Pit Building, dazzling runners with Zumba sessions, live concerts by local band 53A, a food and beverage village and VIP packages.

For the 10th edition of Sundown Marathon, there will be four race categories – 5KM Fun Run, 10KM, Half Marathon and Full Marathon. Sundown Marathon is the perfect platform for runners of all levels, giving them the chance to step out of their comfort zone and challenge their limits, whether they are true blue running advocates or casual fans.
