Today’s proceedings started with Race Director, Rainer, playing Santa Claus and distributing the official Adidas shoes, socks, Climachill running vest (light green) and Climachill black shorts to the gleeful Seiko Pacers. From what I was told, compared to the Adidas Climacool material, the newly launched Adidas Climachill material is thinner and lighter. It would be interesting to see how Climachill reacts to 4-6 hours of sweat compared to its thicker cousin, Climacool.

Pacing Wisdom
Next, Running Coach and Head of the Seiko Pacers for SCKLM 2015, Mark Williams opening remarks were encouraging, “You (Pacers) have done a great job.” imageThen, it was quickly back to serious business, “If you are 5 minutes off your (prescribed) pace, please take-off your pacer’s vest because you are no longer of any use as a pacer. However, by all means, do enjoy and finish the race. Also, if you are supposed to run a certain pace, make sure you keep to that pace throughout the whole run.” With 6,800 marathoners expected on race day, Mark further explained, “You’ll find many runners following you. So, don’t be overwhelmed by the huge crowd and make sure you stick to your task as a pacer and ….Remember to keep talking to your runners, so that they do not fall-back.”.

Stay with 6-hour pacers or else!

Stay with 6-hour pacers or else!

At this point, I started feeling some pity towards the pacers who will have to run like clockwork to meet their stringent targets. As a side note, it seems that if a runner’s pace fluctuates alot as a result of steep elevation or fatigue setting-in, then, it will not be wise to follow a pacer. For runners, like me, who do not run at a constant pace, the pacers’s balloons are still good indicators to check how fast or slow I am running in relation to my desired finishing time.

Will aunties follow these 5:30 pacers!?

Will aunties follow these 5:30 pacers!?

Coach Mark finished-off his presentation with more valuable lessons for the Pacers, “I suggest you run a total of 50-30km in your new Adidas shoes & outfit in the next two weeks before the actual race day to break them in.”

What Motivates Pacers

As David Wong (Senior Manager, Brand Activitation of adidas – another mouthful) remarked in his welcome speech, “I am confident that runners will enjoy the cooling benefits of the new running shirt designed for this marathon.”.

Do Not Clap Too Much
When SCKLM Race Director, Rainer Biemans was called-up to the front stage for his speech, there was a huge chorus of cheer emitting from the audience. Rainer enjoys massive support from the running community because through his company, Dirigo Events, he has elevated the standard of marathons in Malaysia directly through his meticulous efforts of staging Malaysia’s most prestigious and well-loved Standard Chartered KL Marathon over the past 6 years. Indirectly, Rainer’s dedicated team has also benefited Malaysia’s running scene by setting a high benchmark which other local organisers aspire to attain or try to emulate with certain degrees of success. However, the rousing cheer for Rainer is not only for his support and close understanding of the runners’s needs, but more importantly, he is a truly nice guy who is always humble and unassuming, and he is ever-willing to publicly give credit to his team for their hardwork.

I guess, a true stature of a man can be judged not by what he has, but rather, what he is willing to forego inorder to help others. In short, to stage a collosal, high-profile event like SCKLM, the Boss can never let his ego get in the way of what needs to be done: Atleast, not during the 6 months, it takes to plan, prepare and execute KL’s top marathon.
Too sexy for my top!

Unexpected Catwalk
To be frank, I am not much of a merchandising-sort-of-guy because my wallet cannot keep-up with the non-stop streams of new and better products always on display in the shopping malls. I liken myself to a poor and hungry vagabond sitting outside a posh restaurant who is staring through the front window at a couple gleefully digging into plates of Michelin-Star juicy steaks, and the sight makes me drool involuntarily. Gross right? That’s precisely the same reason why I avoid Sports outlets unless absolutely necessary.
SCKLM New Top

SCKLM New Top

On this particular occassion at the adidas Sports Performance Store, as I walked through the store entrance, I was not sure what to expect because in my mind, merchandising products can be quite cheesy and compromising: It’s as though, the merchandise licensor is saying, “I dare you to buy this absurd looking key-chain!”. Fortunately, my actual experience turned-out to be rather enjoyable. Why? Well, firstly, adidas and their hosting team genuinely made the guests feel very welcomed.
Seiko Pacers

Seiko Pacers

Secondly, I met with so many friends and fellow runners there, and it was a good opportunity to catch-up with each other. Thirdly, I really liked how the newly-launched merchandise collection of shoe, running tee, cap & water bottle were paraded on a colourful makeshift catwalk by happy and young models.
Zesty models

Zesty models

Indeed, the mixture of male & female models showing-off the gears brought a refreshing boost to the proceedings. Furthermore, after a closer inspection of the colours and designs of the newly unveiled merchandises , I realised that these items were not a way for the owners to get rid of slow-moving stock. On the contrary, adidas had brought their A-game, and they are presenting us with the best that they could offer. Their quick-dry, sporty black Tee with the word “RUN” emblazoned across the front will satisfy any runner’s taste for style and performance. As for the Supernova shoes, I will wait for another day to review them, once after, I have had a chance to test them out. Even better, I will share below some top tips on running shoes from SCKLM running guru, Mr. Mark Williams.

New Official Apparel Partner
They say, if you want to go fast, run alone, but if you want to run far, run with a buddy. Even then, I would add that it is better to run alone, then to run with a lousy partner if truth be told.

Performance Store

Performance Store

On paper, this newly unveiled partnership appears extremely synergistic and timely. The introduction of the prestigious brand adidas will inject a renewed sense of dynamism, style and functionality to SCKLM 2015, and as a result, the fans of SCKLM can expect greater bang for their dollar come race day on the 4th October 2015. How come? Well, adidas is a globally-recognised sports powerhouse who has legions of fans around the world, and I am sure that adidas presence will open a new market of new runners, who are loyal to adidas, for SCKLM. Additionally, adidas is a high-profile and highly marketable brand which will open more commercial opportunities for SCKLM. In return, by tying-up with SCKLM, the adidas company will have instant and direct access to the lucratice Running Market in Malaysia. On a commercial standpoint, both parties stand to gain significantly from this strategic partnership. What about the runners themselves and what is in it for them? Directly, the SCKLM fans can expect better quality official apparel and merchandise made available to them. Moreover, the SCKLM runners will also benefit from the expected adidas’s proactive marketing campaigns and promotional activities which is designed to create a splash and mark their arrival unto the 7-year old SCKLM stage. At the same time, I am sure adidas will offer more goodies to win-over the SCKLM fans. Of course, I may be wrong about adidas marketing plans, but in any case, I do expect adidas to make the most of this business opportunity in a way which only a profitable company with their stature, expertise and resource can successfully manage.
Red Carpet Gala Event

Red Carpet Gala Event

If the grand and extravagant partnership launching event is anything to go by, then it is safe to assume that adidas will go all-out, no expenses spared, to actively create a buzz and hype for SCKLM. The race organiser, Dirigo Events, seem equally excited to be working together with a dynamic Official Apparel partner who is continuously striving for excellence. So, I forsee the working relationship between adidas and SCKLM will strengthen and blossom overtime which can only mean good news for SCKLM & adidas fans.

The Running Guru
Mark Williams is well-known and respected elite runner and he is the head running coach for SCKLM. Mark’s duty includes leading all of the many running clinics which are organised months and weeks prior to race day in order to help the registered runners adequately prepare for their race. Just by attending the whole gamut of SCKLM well-organised running clinics which encompasses every key facet of running drills, the runners have gained back the money which they have paid for the race registsation fee. In other words, for a mere RM80 Full Marathon fee, runners are not only entitled to a beautiful KL route, a medal, a Finisher Tee, refreshments, race certificate, promotional vouchers, but there is no additional charge to attend all of the running clinics, provided that you

can find an available slot.
On race day, Mark swaps his training shoes for racers, and participates in the half-marathon eversince he quit running Full Marathons 3 years ago. Why? Mark explained, “I could no longer commit to the necessarily long FM training schedule due to my work and family commitments.”. Incidentally, Mark’s SCKLM Personal Best for half-marathon is 1 hour 10 minutes in 2006. As a coach, Mark is like a walking Running Encylopedia, and he is very generous with his expert knowledge of running. So, I did take the oppurtunity to ask him about how he chooses his running shoes. Mark pointed-out, “I was using Nike shoes until 3 months ago, when I switched to adidas.”. I queried him, “What is the difference between Nike and adidas running shoes?”. Mark replied, “Nike is a more fashion conscious brand, whereby adidas is more geared to function and performance.” Listening to him talk passionately about the different shoes, I deduced that Mark is not concerned about the shoe brand at all, rather, he is more interested in a shoes ability to give him maximum speed with minimum padding. Mark shared, “You want to look for shoe brands like adidas who offers a wide range of models to accomodate the many different kinds of runners out there and their many different running forms.”. Then, Mark showed me examples of the adidas shoes on display which he would pick for racing a full, half, 10k and training purposes, and he explained the rationale behind his personal choices. Interestingly, Mark highlighted that it is important for runners to take into consideration their body type (thin, tall, short or fat), body weight, as well as running pace before deciding how much shoe padding support is necessary. Generally, elite runners who can run a full marathon below 3 hours 30 minutes will only need half the amout of shoe padding compared to the slower runners. As for training, Mark recommends a shoe which is abit more padding like adidas Super Nova Glide Boost because speed is not the absolute priority and runners should reduce impact and stress on their joints and ligaments to extend their running life.

Mengenai adidas Malaysia

BSN PUTRAJAYA NIGHT MARATHON (BSNPNM) 2015

Second To None

Second To None

BSN PUTRAJAYA NIGHT MARATHON (BSNPNM) 2015

Press Conference
The PC was held at 2:30pm, 26th August at BSN HQ in Jalan Ampang. The Guest-Of-Honour was BSN Deputy Chief Executive, Mr. Siew Kin Meng, and the other guests included BSN staff, Race Director Mr. Niithi Seelan, Putrajaya Municipality Representatives, Director Generals from Hospital KL/Selayang/Sg.Buloh/Klang, the Sponsors, and the Media. As I walked into the meeting room, Niithi shouts, “Gus, can you write something nasty about that guy,” pointing to the familiar figure of Nick Arthur. I replied, “He (Nick) always writes about himself, and that’s the way it is!”.

Malaysia’s Biggest Night Marathon

BSN's Mr. Siew (Centre)

BSN’s Mr. Siew (Centre)

Siew explained that BSN became the Title Sponsor for BSNPNM in 2011, and the event has grown from 8,000 to 12,000 runners. Over the past 5 years, PNM has raised RM400,000 for several charities. In 2014, RM100,00 was collected through corporates and donated to the Persatuan Dyslexia Malaysia. This year, all of the donations collected will be distributed to 4 Government Hospitals – GH, Selayang, Sg. Buloh & Klang.
Mr. Siew unveiled the new PNM logo saying that the new one reflected the maturity, boldness and modern minimalistic of their showcase marathon.

40 year banking tradition

40 year banking tradition

Frankly, I find the new logo to be too simple and boring. I still prefer the old logo depicting the bridge which featured prominently in the 5km category.
Mr. Siew added that this year’s 5km category will be named the “5km Glow Run”, and each of its runner will receive a glow stick, glow glasses and glow shoe laces for the race. I can imagine how beautiful will be the sight of 2,500 glowing runners running across the 1km ornate bridge – cue legions of photographers. Siew joked, “If you cannot run 10km, run the 5km, and if like me, you cannot run 5km, then follow me because I know a short-cut!”. I never knew that bankers have a good sense of humour too?!

Niithi & new suit (Far Left)

Niithi & new suit (Far Left)

In Short, My Name Is Niithi
Race Director, Niithi presented to the audience the technical details of the night marathon. He said, “the Full Marathon course has less elevation than the Half Marathon. After 35km, we will have some entertainment to cheer-up the runners as that part of the route is quite boring”. Niithi further highlighted that there will be 22 ambulances present to reduce any emergency response time. In fact, looking at the full Medical Team (see below list), I can conclude that BSNNM 2015 will have the most comprehensive Medical Team to ratio of total participants:-

Doctors On Call

Doctors On Call

1) Doctors – 10 persons
2) Medical Assistants – 7 persons
3) Nurses – 7 persons
4) First Aiders – 88 persons
5) Ambulances – 22 units
6) Cycle Units – 12 units
7) Motorbike Units – 2 units
8) Emergency Unit – 1 set

imageParticipants From 22 Countries
The highest number of contingent according to countries are 10,844 (Malaysia), 20 (Singapore), 18 (Kenya), 11 (Brunei), 9 (United Kingdom), 8 (Japan), 5 (Indonesia & Russia), 4 (Hong Kong & Philippines), 3 (France, India & Thailand), 2 (Australia, China, Ireland & Nigeria), 1 (New Zealand, Taiwan & Vietnam).

Groupie

Groupie

The 12,000 participants for each distance are;
1) Full Marathon – 1,500
2) Half Marathon – 3,500
3) 10k – 4,500
4) 5k – 2,500

Show Me The Money
A grand total of RM79,000 cash awaits the Top Ten finishers from each of the 13 categories of 42km, 21km & 10km except the 10km Corporate Team who will earn cash prize for the Top 3 only. The two biggest cash prize of RM10,000 and RM7,000 will go to the winners of the Men & Women’s Marathon respectively. The difference in this prize money for Men & Women is due to the fact that the Men make-up for 60% of the Full Marathon participants which makes their category more competitive than the Women’s FM category. Niithi remarked, “In the near future, we expect equal participation from both Male & Female runners.”.
Since BSNNM is sanctioned by the World & Local Running Bodies, any running records broken during the race can be validated and recognised officially.image

Remember The Blue Caps
Nick: “Last year, you gave-away blue caps to the FM & HM runners. Will you be doing the same this year?”
Niithi: “Only the FM runners will be given the caps because we want to reward the full marathoners more. However, we will be giving the half marathoners a special wrist band.”

Adequate Isotonic Drinks

What’s Left To Do
Everything is set, and I expect nothing else but a spectacular night marathon extravaganza come Saturday Night, 24th October 2015. The highly experienced and efficient race organisers, Twenty First Century Sports, never fail to raise the runners’s spirits and pump-up the runners at their showcase event. All hearts will be beating faster come 8pm, when the eager FM runners are officially released into the night. There will be 3 awesome bridge-crossings, and groups of rousing drummers along the route will be banging-away hard in order to spur-on the courageous night runners. Nulli Secundus.

Mizuno Wave Run 2015

MIZUNO WAVE RUN 2015

Big Wave by RUNNING TOONS

Big Wave by RUNNING TOONS

The 10th Wave
The Mizuno Wave Run (MWR) is back this year to celebrate its 10th Anniversary!
Since the inception of MWR in 2006, its sponsor the World Of Sports (WOS) Malaysia wanted to create a running event which is fun for the participants and at the same time, to guide new runners on proper training techniques, and on the use of correct running shoes and attire. As World Of Sports’s General Manager, Mr. Glenny recalls, “In the 3rd year, when we introduced Mizuno running vests as part of our race kit, many participants were questioning our decision to do so because there were some runners who were embarrassed to wear a vest instead of the usual T-shirts. However, we explained to them that runners should wear running vests because it is the most comfortable attire for running”.
Glenny continues, “This year to mark Mizuno Wave Run’s 10th Anniversary, we decided to add a new 21km category in order to give the 10km & 15km runners an opportunity to challenge themselves and conquer their first 21km on a beautiful Putrajaya route”.
Incidentally, this the 3rd consecutive year in which the MWR will be held in the municipality of Putrajaya. The first 3 years, it was held at Padang Merbok, and 4 years after that, in UPM, Serdang.

PUTRAJAYA, MALAYSIA, 7th August, 2015 – Mizuno Wave Run, organized by W.O.S. World of Sports Malaysia and Mizuno is set to return with its 10th inaugural wave edition at Putrajaya on 27th September this year.
Since its inception in 2005, Mizuno Wave Run has been one of the most popular running events in the Klang Valley. This year, to commemorate its 10th wave edition, Mizuno Wave Run is set to deliver a new experience to the runners by introducing a new distance category, which is the 21km Half Marathon alongside with its popular 10km distance category.
“It’s been a great milestone for Mizuno Wave Run since its inception back in 2005. With only 900 odd runners back then, the event has gradually grown to be one of the most anticipated local running platforms amongst runners,” said Senior General Manager of W.O.S. World of Sports Malaysia, Ms. Carol Wong.
“Over the years, we have been receiving positive responses from our regular Mizuno runners and we are thrilled to be back again. This year, we are targeting 4,500 runners and we believe that with the introduction of the new distance category of 21km Half Marathon, we are able to deliver our best commitments to those who have been supporting us over the past 9 years”, Carol further commented.
Putrajaya is chosen again to host the Mizuno Wave Run 2015 due to its perfect landscape infrastructure. “Undeniably, a good location plays a major role in ensuring a comfortable running environment for runners. With the beautiful landscape, safety routes and ample parking space available, we are convinced that choosing Putrajaya as the event location will encourage and entice a promising number of runners this year”, said Senior Sales Manager of W.O.S. World of Sports Malaysia, Mr. Glenny J Da Costa.

Smitten By The Go Bug

SMITTEN BY THE GO BUG

Dawn breaking at The Esplanade

Dawn breaking at The Esplanade

It’s not easy to capture good shots during the darkest hour, just before daybreak. This one is pretty decent of the start line at Campaign For A Lane (7th Edition) where 4,500 cyclists (and 3 GOs) circumnavigated around the whole of beautiful Penang Island.
A few days after that ride, I received this nice note from a lady volunteer who was in one of the support cars:-
“I used to be a runner. No longer. Now I just stick to yoga and Pilates. But your bike caught my attention!
I saw, googled, facebooked and then Sandra (a mutual friend) mentioned your name. And that’s how I tracked you guys down..Fell in love with your bike the minute I saw it. Never knew of its existence before.”.

This sounds like the lyrics from an old Western & Country song! LOL

The Colour Run Singapore Shutdown

Up In Smoke!

Up In Smoke!

Colour Run Shutdown!

On 29/Jun/2015, I wrote a piece entitled “Why The Color Run Should Be Scrapped”.
https://gusghani.wordpress.com/?s=colour+run&submit=Search
At that time, I was not at all convinced by the Colour Run franchise owner’s official statement that their chemical-powdered runs are completely safe. Today, CIMB Bank Singapore showed similar safety concerns by pulling-out their sponsorship for the Colour Run to be held in Singapore this weekend ( Read About It ). Yes, it will mean a significant monetary loss to the parties directly involved in this event. However, I back the title sponsor CIMB Bank 110% in their decision to back-out because unless, every safety risk can be mitigated, any public event, big or small, should never be considered, let alone be staged. CIMB’s bold decision will send a strong message to other event organisers, local and foreign ones, to always consider the participants’s safety first ahead of any other consideration, such as monetary gains.
So, the next time that you have any concern about the safety issue of any public events, sports events or otherwise, just do what I did and ask the organiser themselves about it. If their answers are unsatisfactory, then why not share your opinion with the rest of the world. Who knows? Your action might save someone’s life and prevent injuries to innocent lives.
What about The Color Run in Malaysia? It is only logical that CIMB Bank will also pull-out its sponsorship for the Malaysia edition too, right? Nobody likes to see an event cancelled, but we hate accidents and disasters more! Do Malaysian customers deserve the same level of consumer protection as our Singaporean counterparts. Heck, yes!! So, let us wait for the official decision by The Color Run 2015 (Malaysia). I hope they will make the right choice, the only choice!
To my surprise, I only noticed today that the last posting on The Color Run Malaysia FB page was on the 29th June 2015 ( see photo ) and on The Color Run Malaysia official website, there is only a mention that KL edition is “Coming Soon”.
No point speculating further until we get some official announcement from CIMB Bank which should be anytime now.
