Semenyih Eco Trail Run 2015

semenyih trail 3Semenyih Eco Trail Run 2015

A Run For Nature Lovers

The inaugural Semenyih Eco Trail Run (SETR) 2015 is targeted for runners who like 100% off-road Trail Running and at the same time, enjoy being one with nature.

By definition, Ecology is the relationship between organisms and their environment. However, in many instances, we also use the word “Eco” (short for Ecology) to refer to the protection of our natural environment. In the case of SETR 2015, the word “Eco” also refers to promoting the appreciation of our environment by showcasing the beauty of mother nature, and at the same time, learn to exist harmoniously within our Eco-system.

Forest Trails & Snapping Twigs

semenyih trail 1The race venue is situation at Sg. Lalang Hot spring Semenyih which is only one hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur. Although near the city centre, this venue is at the heart of a green lung which is surrounded by picturesque forests and is a popular holiday retreat for city-dwellers who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, and enjoy the tranquility and unmatched beauty of nature.

For trail runners, there is no bigger thrill than to run through tree-lined and undulating trails with the peaceful silence broken only by the sounds of twigs snapping and birds calling.

Use It Or Lose It

Running events, such as SETR 2015, that support our environment, by working hand-in-hand with the local community, are vital in the preservation of our country’s fast-depleting Rainforest because they are directly supporting the local economy via Eco-tourism and Eco-sports rather than destroying the environment for the sake of unsustainable projects which primarily benefits greedy corporations and unscrupulous businessmen.

The Heart of Lion Parkson Run 2015

Helping Disadvantaged Children

I was invited by the Lion-Parkson Foundation to attend the launch of Lion Parkson Run which is scheduled to take place 15th November 2015.

Press Conference

Press Conference

The launch venue was the Home for Handicapped & Mentally Disabled Children, and it was a good opportunity for this running blogger to see first-hand how the money raised from the run will be spent, and to meet the donors, the sponsors, the volunteers, the caregivers and the disadvantaged children related to the project.

Abandoned Babies & Children

A baby taken care by a care-giver

A baby taken care by a care-giver

May God have mercy on the souls of parents who abandon their handicapped & physically disabled babies and children. Under Malaysian Law, anyone who abandons a child under 12 faces up to seven years imprisonment, a fine, or both. It seems that nowadays, we cannot open the newspaper without reading some disturbing article on child abuse. I wonder where is our society heading to when we dismally fail our children who should carry our hopes for a bright future.

Who Is Guilty?

Often, when we hear or read the news about an abandoned baby or an abused child, it shocks us but do we really do anything about it?

A Heinous Crime

A Heinous Crime

A Crime Against Society

A Crime Against Society

The honest answer is that most of us do nothing to help these sad children because it did not happen to us or to our children. Some of us play the blame game to make us feel better about ourselves, and we blame the parents, the authorities, and society. We may be right about who should be held accountable, but could we or should we be doing more to help these children. Even if we wanted to help, we still need to go through the proper official channels and work with professional care-givers. If we do not have the time nor the expertise to help the needy directly, it is best to give our support to those who know what they are doing, by donating to them whatever cash that we can afford.

Where Do They End-Up?

Home For The Handicapped Mentally & Physically Disabled Children

Home For The Handicapped Mentally & Physically Disabled Children

There is no happy ending to these pitiful stories of lost innocence. From birth, the handicapped or mentally disabled children are already destined to face hardships. Then, life deals them another cruel blow when their parents decide to abandon them too. Amid such unimaginable despair, there is a beacon of hope in the form of shelter homes and their care-givers.

Tender Loving Care

Tender Loving Care

What is like for these disadvantaged babies and children to be raised in a shelter home? Although, this was my first visit to such a care centre, it left a deep impression on me which I want to briefly share with you here in words and with poignant photographs.

Banting Is Home

Mr. Rajamanikam founded the Home for Handicapped & Mentally Disabled Children in Johor more than twenty years ago. It was there that Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng,

Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng, Chairman of Lion-Parkson Foundation (Standing, 2nd from R)

Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng, Chairman of Lion-Parkson Foundation (Standing, 2nd from R)

was so impressed by the Home’s success in taking care of the children that LPF decided to raise the funds to build a similar centre in Banting, Selangor on a piece of land donated by Lion Group. The Banting Home was opened in November 2012 at a cost of RM2.2 million, and it can accommodate 100 children. Another RM1 million is being raised by LPF to build an extension under phase 2 & 3 which will accommodate another 100 children. All the proceeds from the Lion Parkson Run 2015 will be go towards building such extension.

Mr. Rajamanikam said, “We have 6 centres in Johor, Kuala Terengganu, Pahang, Selangor, and two centres in Malacca. The centres in Malacca are owned by Malacca State Government and we operate the homes on their behalf.” Mr. Rajamanikam is a humble and soft-spoken gentleman who has dedicated twenty years of his life providing care to handicapped and physically disabled children out of his love for children.

Mr & Mrs Rajamanikam with their daughter, Lee Suin Tien who they adopted as a baby 20 years ago

Mr & Mrs Rajamanikam with their daughter, Lee Suin Tien who they adopted as a baby 20 years ago

It was such an honour for me to have met Mr. Rajamanikam, and in that brief moment, I felt the kindness and goodness of his aura touched me spiritually, and all at once, I knew that the children under his care would be cared and loved like they were his own.

Suspended Animation

During our tour of the Home, I noticed that the children were clean and so were the clothes that they had on. Although, they could not communicate, by the look in their eyes, I got the impression of their innocence and I think that they did not have the ability to process who they are, what they are doing and why they are there. In short, these children needed care 24/7. The Manager told me that he and his wife lived at the centre, and they supervised a team of dedicated care-givers. There is also an in-house physiotherapist who give daily physiotherapy to the children with movement difficulties. With the help of physiotherapy, one child who could not sit-up was able to sit-up.

Media Tour of the facilities

Media Tour of the facilities

Indeed, what we normally take for granted in our lives, takes on a whole new meaning for these handicapped and mentally disabled children and their outstanding care-givers. Although, the circumstances which brought these children to this Home may be terribly sad, the facilities and the care given to them is the best available. I left the Home convinced that “home is really where the heart is,” and I noticed that the beacon of hope for the lost children just got brighter thanks to a few good men and women.

Amnig In The Cage

Just The Ticket

Just The Ticket

I first heard of the brand Amnig when I attended the ONE FC mixed martial arts championship which took place at Bukit Jalil on 9th October 2015. Amnig was the apparel sponsor for the event and many of the fighters competing that night were wearing Amnig fighting shorts. The official cage referees, themselves, wore black Amnig collared T-shirts with the unique Amnig emblem of a horse’s face which represents speed, agility and strength. Amnig had their merchandise booth in the main foyer and their attractive training tops with hoods were sold-out for that night.

Moreover, I noticed that they had organised a speed kicking contest for the crowd. When their promoter approached me and asked me to give a try, I remember telling her, “I am not strong enough to do that.”

Amnig & Running

The first time Amnig caught my interest was when I discovered that Amnig was organising a running event – I Am Warrior Run – on 6th December 2015 at One City which is targeting 2,000 runners and offering distances of 10km & 5km with timing chip available for the former distance.

Timing Chip for 10KM

Timing Chip for 10KM

Last year, Amnig held their inaugural run at Bukit Kiara with 500 runners having turned up for it. Being a Running Blogger, I interviewed their Business Development Manager, Mr. David Tang to find-out more about the Amnig brand and their upcoming running event.

David explained, “Amnig is a Malaysian online sportswear retailer with a factory in Cambodia which employs close to 1,000 workers, and we produce garments for many international customers.” David continued, ”Recently, Amnig has been cutting-back on the sales of Lifestyle garments because we want to focus on the production of performance sportswear, and in particular, we want to concentrate on producing sportswear for the 3 key areas of Running, Training & Fitness. In fact, the purpose of organising our own running event is to give our customers and the running community the opportunity to do something enjoyable because besides the run itself, we have many fun-packed activities planned for the participants such as a Zumba session, Face-painting, Speed Kicking Contest, Photo Contest, Wheel of Fortune, Prizes for Top 5 Runners, and Lucky Draws.

Moreover, each participant will be given our AMNIG dri-fit event T-shirt, and the different cutting for Men and Women Tees will ensure a better fit for both sexes. To cap it off, all finishers will be given a snazzy medal to take home in order to mark their achievements,” David highlighted.

Be A Warrior & Get More

All the slots for the I Am Warrior Run 5km distance has already been taken-up, and for those of you who want to run the 10km, you can register online at the Marathon Shop by end October or until further notice.

Although, Amnig, under its official business entity of AG Lifestyle S/B, is a relative newcomer in the running arena, its owner, Mr. Colin Cheang, has accumulated 30 years of business experience in the garment industry. Mr. Colin shared, “Amnig has big plans for the near future, and I believe that it is vital for Amnig to preserve our integrity in all of our business activities in order to build earn the trust and confidence of our industry.” In other words, Mr. Colin plans to significantly expand the market presence of Amnig but not if, it means having to compromise the quality of its products and services. So, how good are Amnig products, anyway? Recently, I did visit the Amnig Concept Store in Damansara to review their running line, and I am happy to share with you here below what I uncovered and discovered.

Amnig customers have a choice to either purchase the products online, or some customers prefer to visit their store to touch, feel and try on the garments first before purchasing.

Armed with my DSLR camera I headed to Uptown Damansara to meet up with Amnig Manager, Benny who would give me a tour of Amnig Concept Store. Given that many sports brands tend to over-hype their brand value and often, in their eagerness to sell their products, they are known to exaggerate the true quality of their products, I tried to keep an open mind about my visit, and avoid making any hasty judgment until I inspected all the items closely. Any case, I made my way up the flight of stairs to the store on the first floor. From the street level, the entrance is inconspicuous but once I reached the glass door of the store on the first floor, I could see a showroom neatly displaying the range of Amnig sportswear. The actual store layout was surprisingly spacious and brightly lit which make it ideal for shoppers to browse around comfortably. From a quick initial survey of the store, I could see that store designer has used all the space available in a clever way so as to be able to display as many of the garments as possible and at the same time, leave enough space between the aisles for visitors to admire the many colourful garments.

For the next two hours, Benny patiently explained to me about the intricacies of the workmanship behind each of the Amnig sportswear items. As Benny helpfully pointed-out the apparel’s different fabrics, cuttings and designs, I was busy taking notes and photos for my blog write-up. At the end of our session, I walked-away feeling impressed at the considerable thought that went into each design: It was clear that the Amnig staff, from the top to the bottom, were as passionate about the quality of their Amnig sports apparel as we, runners, are about our running! It was this display of genuine passion in their work output that really resonated with me, and it was something to which I could totally relate.

The Space Race – Corporate Social Responsibility Project

Making Science Fun_Space Race10348716_163013267379173_467452652481448727_o

The Amazing Space Race

Winner Takes All

The Space Race (TSR) is a new series of 10 exciting trail running race to be held in 10 States throughout Malaysia starting January 2016, and the Winning teams from each series will qualify for the final championship to be held in Putrajaya. The stakes are high because the grand prize is an out-of-this-world trip to Star City, Russia for a once-in-a-lifetime cosmonaut training. You do not have to be a rocket scientist to participate in The Space Race, but you should be fit and strong physically, mentally and psychologically.

The Space Race (TSR) is the brainchild of Angkasawan Malaysia, Dato’ Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor – the first Malaysian in space – and Syukran Idris, the Managing Director of Moteevasi Media Sdn Bhd, a personal growth events and merchandising company. Using the The Space Race as their platform, these two men have joined forces to inspire our nation’s Youth to dream big, develop their confidence, ingrain the correct philosophy of science, as well as encourage youngsters to keep healthy and fit. As Syukran declares, “In selecting the theme DREAMS ARE POSSIBLE for the event we hope to inspire these youths to be the next Malaysian hero.” To help them achieve this massive undertaking, the duo have enlisted the support of the Astronautical Association of Malaysia (Astro X) – an organisation geared to educating the public in the field of Aerospace and Science – and of Fitmosphere – a fitness education and certification outfit.

Future Space Cadets

Rocket Workshop_Space Race Smiling Faces_Space Race Spaceman Selfie__Space Race11930854_163012534045913_2267808446937197423_o

In 2007, Datuk Sheikh was launched into space after completing his 18-month cosmonaut training in Star City, Russia. “In today’s terms, it would cost USD50 million to send a man to Space for 12 days,” Dr. Sheikh beamed as he addressed about 100 children from Rumah Tunas Harapan shelter homes within Selangor, as part of a Corporate Social Responsibility project staged by Dr. Sheikh and Moteevasi in Shah Alam on 18th October 2015. On that memorable day, the bright-eyed children were treated to an unforgettable list of educational and fun-filled activities. As a warm-up act, there was a short fitness session conducted by trainers from Fitmosphere in which the importance of exercise was demonstrated to the young audience in a fun and interactive manner. The main event followed with an inspiring presentation by our Angkasawan. Looking at the lit-up faces of the orphaned children who were all seated upfront on the floor, I could tell that they were spellbound and hanging on to the Angkasawan’s every word: After all, how often does anyone get a chance to meet and take photos with a real-life astronaut? Not very often, especially if we consider that there are only 532 astronauts from 36 countries among our planet of 7.2 billion people. What a world of difference it certainly makes to have a real Malaysian astronaut explain in front of our very eyes his first-hand space challenges. In a surreal way, it made the vastness of space and our galaxy seem so real and closer to home than we could have ever imagined.

Having A Blast

Future Rocket Scientist_Space Race TSR_01Aerial Challenge_Space Race

Like The Space Race, the specially arranged outing for the underprivileged children was not all about the end game, but more importantly, it was about instilling self-belief and confidence to the young participants, and to encourage our Youth to have the courage to follow their dreams no matter how silly it may seem to others. Dr. Sheikh, himself, was only 10-years old when he first dreamed of being an astronaut, and 25 years later, he has successfully achieved his dream.

Next on the CSR agenda was the spectacular rocket launch conducted by the AstroX team to officially launch the event, and then, we all headed to the nearby Skytrex Adventure park where the children were able to fly, swing and glide on the various aerial obstacles suspended above the lush tropical Malaysian rainforest. Aside from the physical challenges, like the upcoming Space Race, the aerial course teaches the participants the importance of discipline and teamwork, as well as build their self-confidence through the satisfaction of being able to complete the course.

Racing To New Heights

To cap-off the CSR activities, AstroX conducted a “pop-rocket” rocketry Workshop for the children to stimulate their imagination and encourage creativity and at the same time, teach them the essence of space science. No doubt in my mind that the children will take back home some bits of information or experience from their outing which they will remember for a long time to come.

12045660_163012247379275_5922681802891127992_o

As for the launch of The Space Race, in this Digital Age where children spend more time on the computer than playing outdoors, and our fast-food culture is leading to more children suffering from obesity, it is refreshing to have a nationwide obstacle race which will not only encourage the younger generation to stay fit but also inspire them to DREAM BIG.

We apologise for the cancellation of the Standard Chartered KL Marathon but the health and safety of the runners is still our top priority. Even though the race was cancelled I am pleased that we still achieved our Run For A Reason goals.”

Race organiser and race owner, and Managing irector of irigo Events, Rainer Biemans said “The Marathon is the highlight of our year; there is nothing more satisfying than seeing every runner cross the finish line with a smile. With the API readings escalating to unhealthy levels, we share your disappointment at being unable to proceed with the event. We are very thankful for all the support we’ve received. I am also very grateful to the volunteers, medical teams, officials from FTKLAA, Kuala Lumpur Traffic Police, DBKL representatives, and the authorities for their tremendous efforts, which made things go very smoothly this morning.”

All smiles for volunteers at the collection centre as runners came in droves to collect their entitlements at Dataran Merdeka.

The hospitality tents at the race site opened its doors so that runners had ample food and drinks while waiting to collect their medals, finisher t-shirts and certificates. Many of the
enthusiastic volunteers were still all smiles, cheerfully guiding waves of arrivals to the right collection points.

Cheery announcers, pumping music and multitudes of selfies as well as groufies by runners keen to enjoy themselves while showing their support for the cancelled event created a festive feel at historic Dataran Merdeka as early as 6 a.m. There was even a MARRIAGE proposal at Dataran Merdeka during the collection. Idrus Ahmad popped the question to
Trias Nuriartu in front of his supportive friends and a cheering crowd. The couple met in a gym in Jakarta. Idrus Ahmad, an avid runner said “Trias has always been supportive of my passion, therefore I chose this significant event to propose to her along with our friends who are my family.”

She said YES! Idrus Ahmad proposes to Trias Nuriartu at Dataran Merdeka in front of friends and cheering fans of the cancelled Marathon.

The Yimeister!

Introduction: During the past and current 7 Editions of the Standard Chartered Kuala Lumpur Marathon (SCKLM), as many as 150,000 runners have taken part in KL’s premier marathon in all categories. Due to SCKLM’s broad appeal, the participating runners come from all walks of life, young and old, fast or slow, novices to elite runners, from near and far descend upon Dataran Merdeka en masse once-a-year to run in our majestic capital KL.
In my “SCKLM 2015 Real People Series”, I talk to individual runners who will run in SCKLM 2015 and find-out from them, what running in SCKLM 2015 means to them. I hope that you will find their stories & revelations as inspiring to you as they are to me.

Yim Heng Fatt, The Century Marathoner
It gives me great pleasure to share with you, Yim’s personal SCKLM STORY based on our interview recently :-

1) When did you start running?
I started running in 2009 as a form of exercise to lose weight and to keep fit.

2) Why do you like running?
Well there are many benefits of running from being healthy active. It also helps forge friendship and fellowship between running friends too. Best of all running is just plain fun and not something overly difficult to start with.

3) How many times have you run SCKLM?
Including this SCKLM 2015, it will be my 5th time.

4) Why did you choose SCKLM as your FM number 100?
SCKLM 2015 will not be my 100th. It will be my 103rd Full Marathon. So maybe this question is not appropriate.

5) What is your profession? Your Age?
I am an IT Manager and I am sweet 45 this year.

Lorna Ling, The Maiden Runner
It givea me great privilege to share with you, Lorna’s personal SCKLM STORY in her own words:-

Any physical challenge will do for Lorna Ling (R)

Any physical challenge will do for Lorna Ling (R)

“I started running in 2009. Actually started with walking, then only running. Slow progression but till today, still happy doing it. Anyway 1st run/race was a 10k at SCKLM 2010. Subsequently for the next 3 SCKLM, I did the half marathob. I took a break in 2014 and I was encouraged by a friend to do the Full Marathon this year. I chose SCKLM as my FM debut as it wld be fun to run with so many other marathoners & it would be a safe way to see KL on foot.

The journey has been fulfilling. It took dedication and discipline to wake up early – sometimes 3.45am, just to fit in training for the day. First and foremost, I am a mother & homemaker, and I do not let my running get in the way of my duties. I have 2 teens, Julian is 20 & Lisa is 14.

Super Mom Lorna (R)

Super Mom Lorna (R)

Why do I like running? It’s easy & fun & I can run solo, with my thoughts. My ‘me time’. A time to reflect, destress & be happy. Sweat is the elixir of life. I like it that I can start running from my house. I’m fortunate to live at a place with wide roads & lots of trees, squirrels & birds. I’ve run barefooted, ran in the rain, ran through a 21k obstacle course, etc… running is so much more than what some imagined it to be.

At 47 yrs old, I’m just happy & grateful to be able to run. When I 1st started, i wrote this in my 1st running log –
I may not be able to run fast
I may not be able to run for more than half hour
I may not be able to run a 10k or a marathon
Never mind! I just get out there
Do my thing, my way & enjoy myself!
Well, I’ll finally be running a FM, something beyond my expectations.” – Lorna Ling
