Blue Cap Relay Run 2016

Blue Cap Relay Run 2016

FAST FACTS

Event: 2nd Blue Cap Relay Run 2016

Date: 06 November 2016

Venue: Dewan Tunku Canselor, University of Malaya

Format: 3 Runners x 3km

Organiser: Blue Cap Movement

Total Participants: 1,000++

EDITOR’S NOTE

Recently, I have been encouraging my sister-in-law Marina, who is a Cancer Survivor, to join fun runs. So, this relay run was a golden opportunity for me to submit a team comprising of me, my wife Maryati (Marina’s younger sister) and Marina under the Cancer Survivor Category. Under this particular Category, Teams can register for free as long as one of the team member is a Cancer Survivor. For those Survivors who cannot run, they can ride a wheelchair. What fantastic ideas to encourage Cancer Survivors of all abilities to join!

The other available categories are specially designed to encourage doctors, women, senior citizens, and families to form their own running teams. It is befitting for the team members to include and represent the whole cross-section of our society because no one is totally free from the ever present threat of Cancer.

HARNESSING SUPPORT

The run was launched by Health Ministry director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah and supported by Universiti Malaya, MySihat by the Health Ministry, the Malaysian Urological Association, and the Universiti Malaya Alumni Association.

Meeting and mingling with fellow Cancer Survivors, and having the presence of cancer support groups and many supportive people will naturally boost the confidence of the participating cancer survivors to live a normal life. For Joe Public like me, this occasion is an ideal opportunity to meet the experts and learn about Cancer Survivorship, as well as directly support Cancer Survivors and their affiliated Charities and Support Groups.

All funds would be channelled to the ‘Urological Cancer Trust Fund’ for prostate cancer treatment under Blue Cap Movement which is the collaboration of Malaysian Urological Association and Prostate Cancer Society of Malaysia.

LIVING LEGENDS

Malaysian football legends Datuk Soh Chin Aun, Datuk Santok Singh and ex-National Teammates ran to help raise awareness for prostate cancer and strengthen bonds among survivors of the disease (Video Clip).

HEALTHY FUN

“It was nice to see runners of all ages taking part,” declared Anim who had joined in order to experience her first relay run.

RELAY RUN

Upon registration, each of the 300 teams were given a baton with a timing chip.

The morning began with all the participants warming-up with an energetic aerobic session at the front courtyard of the Dewan Tunku Canselar.

Race Director Julie Wong of JW Biznet briefed us on the technical and safety requirements, before we were divided into 3 groups according to 1st, 2nd and 3rd relay runners.

About 7:30am, Health Ministry director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah flagged-off the 1st relay runners.

The route took us 3km around the pleasant environment of the UM Campus. The roads were closed to cars, and there were many race marshals along the route to ensure that the runners stayed on course. There were also mobile race volunteers on bicycles to guide and keep a watchful eye on the runners throughout the short distance.

The area 50 metres from the Finish Line was reserved for the next relay runner to wait for their teammates and to exchange the baton. The emcee would announce the bib numbers of each approaching running, so that the next runner could get ready for a smooth baton handover.

It was exciting to watch the runners handover the baton as the crowd cheered them on from the sidelines.

It was impressive to see runners of all ages, shapes and sizes running and supporting each other in a friendly atmosphere.

YOUNG AND OLD

Of course, there was a striking contrast among the fast-running kids and students, and the slow-moving senior citizens. Nevertheless, regardless of the gap in age and abilities, every runner shared a common goal of supporting the cancer survivors, and everyone contributed equally to the resounding success of this charity event.

COMMUNITY SPIRIT

I saw participants many brave Cancer Survivors, silver haired Senior Citizens, as well as innocent young children who must have found it hard to complete the 3km, 2km or 1km distance. However, despite being out of their comfort zone, they were all motivated to complete the challenge for a worthwhile cause.

It was a morning on which many concerned community citizens had banded together for the selfless act of helping those in need. I felt proud that I could be part of this charitable movement, and I salute support groups such as Blue Cap Movement who dedicate themselves to bringing joy to other people’s lives. Everyone deserves a little happiness, especially those who have been struck by misfortune.

OUTDOOR BREAKFAST

After the run, we collected our humongous gold medals, goodie bags and sat around to enjoy our delicious breakfast of nasi lemak, oats biscuits, Lucozade, Milo and Old Town White Coffee.

The cheerful crowd mingled and exchanged stories, while prizes were presented to the top teams of each category.

JW BIZNET

Julie Wong and her hardworking Crew did an exemplary job organising this relay run which was enjoyable for the runners from start to finish. It takes a lot of skill and experience to successfully handle a complex relay run format and to properly manage a crowd of 1,000 participants which included many inexperienced runners from such a diverse age group. With the clever use of the venue space and through careful organisation, Julie’s system ensured that the event flowed smoothly. I have participated in enough failed running events to appreciate the professionalism displayed and delivered by the technical crew here which is precisely what the participants, the event owners, the sponsors, the event partners, the donors, and the Cancer Survivors deserved.

ARIANI HIJAB RUN 2016

ARIANI HIJAB RUN 2016

NEW Event: Ariani Hijab Run 2016

Date: 22-OCT-2016

Venue: Jakel Mall, Kuala Lumpur

Distance: 5km

Title Sponsor: Ariani

Organiser: The Marathon Company (TMC) who also brought to you Stroller Run 2015, Onesie Runsie 2015, Ice Watch Light Up The Night Run 2015.

Total Participants: 3,000

👍👍My Verdict: A Groundbreaking Event With BIG VALUE

Editor’s Note

I am no expert in Hijab Fashion, but nevertheless, I was looking forward to join a maiden running event which is sponsored by the high street fashion retailer, Ariani. It’s always interesting to see how the organiser and sponsor will showcase the Ariani Hijab brand, and at the same time, stage a good fun run which meets the expectations of the participants.

No doubt, the idea of organising a running event specifically for women and women who wear Hijabs is brilliant, and I was keen to see firsthand how this new untold story would unfold.

Outstanding Goodies

On top of the usual event dri-fit Tee, and a medal for all finishers, every participant was given a fashionable Ariani headscarf, water bottle, sling bag and some women essentials. This kind of giveaways are tastefully designed and practical which the participants can really appreciate. The thought which Ariani had put into the runner’s entitlement gave me a good first impression of the inaugural Ariani Hijab Run.

For the first 1,000 registrants, they had received an additional limited edition headscarf with the words, “Ariani Hijab Run 2016” on it.

🌟Celebrity Star Power

By the time I had arrived at the Jakel Mall venue, there was a huge crowd of Hijab-dorning Runners which had already gathered in the Starting Pen. The Saturday morning air was mild, and filled with the booming voices of celebrity Emcees Fara Farhana and the comical Dee addressing the crowd.

👸The entrance of popular singer and Ariani Brand Ambassador Dato’ Siti Nurhaliza excited the crowd and her fans. Siti was wearing a  fashionably sporting outfit, and she wished all the runners well. Admittedly, I was disappointed that Siti was not joining the run, but after the run, she had warmed our hearts with a few of her hit songs.

The flag-off was delayed a few minutes, but being such a short 5km run, it was no big deal. When the starter horn blared, I shot off to the front of the pack to film the leading runners.

Saturday Morning

The drizzle of rain earlier had brought cooling temperatures which certainly made our run more comfortable.

As I joined the steady stream of Hijab Runners cutting through the cordoned-off streets of KL, it struck me how much more beautiful our city is without the usual head-pounding din of motorcars and irritating motorbikes clogging up the roads.

🏃Smooth Route

I really enjoyed running freely through the familiar Jalan Raja Laut, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Ampang, Lorong Pinang, and passing the majestic KLCC towers whose sight always fills me with positive national pride and lifts my spirits.

I was really impressed by the way the traffic police and road marshals ensured our route was totally absent of cars, and we were lucky to be in such good hands. Moreover, the boys and girls at the water station did a fabulous job to keep the runners cheerful.

No Different

Until that morning, I had not really noticed that there were so many enthusiastic Hijab Runners in town. I used to think that wearing Hijab made them feel different, but now I believe that what Hijab Runners can achieve is not despite of the Hijab, it is BECAUSE OF IT!

If this event achieved nothing else, it made people like me respect more the rights of individuals, and of women in particular, to wear whatever they please without passing any judgement. After all, I like to think that we live in a country which is all-embracing and one which everyone can contribute to her success equally. I could even go as far as to say that such women-friendly events as Ariani Hijab Run help to empower women and give them the attention that they deserve. We don’t need to ask for anything more than that, surely.

💰Pay Day

For a fun run, the prize money of RM 5,000, RM4,000, RM3,000, RM2,000, RM1,000 for the top 5 women runners was very generous!

🍌Splendid Spectacle

Upon crossing the finish line, the glowing runners were handed their medal, a banana and mineral water.

I suspect most of the women runners were between 30 to 50-years old, and some ran along with their children, husbands and friends. There was even a father who ran and pushed his daughter in a stroller for 5km. Although, I was part of a small contingent of men joining this event, I never felt out of place or uncomfortable. On the contrary, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I had enjoyed an event which was not created for guys like me.

☕Runners queued-up for the free cup of Vico, and they waited at the instant photo booth where they could pose with various fun props.

🎤As part of the closing ceremony, the crowd gathered to listen and sing along with the talented Dato’ Siti. It was a befitting end to a most enjoyable outing, even for a fly guy…

Diva Runners In The Pink

Diva Runners In The Pink

Event: The Running Diva Malaysia (TRDM) 2016, Pinktober Edition

Date: 23-OCT-2016

Venue: Pullman Lakeside

Distance: 10km and 3km

Organiser: NM Galaxy who also brought us The Superheroes Race 2015/2016 and Commando Elite Challenge 2015.

Editor’s Note

Cancer is a widespread disease which seems to baffle the world’s top doctors when it comes to finding a medical cure. Unfortunately, treatment for cancer is exorbitant, and often beyond the reach of most people, unless they are adequately insured against it.

Therefore, any legitimate campaigns to raise awareness or funds to help not only the cancer patients, but also, the cancer support organisations and experts should be applauded and supported. For Runners like me, via such genuine events such as TRDM, we can pledge our support for cancer patients by doing what we love, running. Now, who says, “You can’t have your cake, and eat it on the run too”…

A Crowd-Puller

I am uncertain if it was the Pinktober factor, the vibrant pink event Tees, the special bra-shaped medal, or the scenic venue which had attracted the large crowds. You know what? It doesn’t even matter, when the final outcome will benefit a worthy cause.

“The Running Diva Malaysia 2016 (Pinktober) was organized in support of breast cancer awareness, and we had tremendous support from more than 4,000 participants.” – Muazan Mohsin, CEO, NM Galaxy.

Every Dollar Counts

The Diva 10km distance category had attracted many regular, as well as casual runners. While, the Glamour 3km category was taken-up by lots  of fun runners and family members.

The brisk sales of the Running Diva official running t-shirts had generated a total of RM3,000 for the Official Beneficiary, National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM).

Symbolically, the legions of pink t-shirt clad runners demonstrated their overwhelming support for not only NCSM, but also, for the millions who are affected directly or indirectly from the widespread sadness and suffering caused by Cancer.

“We hope that all participants had fun during the event, while maintaining healthy lifestyle by running with families and friends, and also to increase their awareness regarding breast cancer.” – Muazan Mohsin, CEO, NM Galaxy.

My Final Verdict

Good Points

✔Increase Breast Cancer Awareness

✔Highlighted the important role of NCSM

✔Excellent Support from the Participants

✔Majestic Event Venue of Pullman Lakeside

✔Nice 10km Route

✔Attractive Medal

✔Good Route Management

✔Helpful Volunteers

Adequate Drinks & Drink Stations

Fast-moving Milo Van queue

✔Fast distribution of medals & snacks

Race Kit distribution adequately managed

Future Improvements

➕Increase ways to collect more funds

➕Should provide a venue map of booths

More space for pre-race aerobics warm-up

➕Better use of space near Stage Area

Tighter crowd control at Finish Area

➕Flag-Off on time

When all is done and dusted, I am happy to congratulate Event Organiser NM Galaxy and all the Sponsors (Pullman Putrajaya Lakeside, GRAB, Summersault, etc.) on putting together an enjoyable fun run which was rewarding for both the participating runners, as well as the Official Beneficiary, National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM).

RBC Race For The Kids 2016 – Event Review

RBC Race For The Kids 2016 – Event Review

From Left: Vivian & Wong with families

Mum Amie with Runner Adiq (front) and his supportive brothers

Editor’s Note

Immediately after completing the 5km charity run, I had a nice chat with the top representatives of the Royal Bank Of Canada (RBC), Mr. Andy Allen, Managing Director, RBC Investor and Treasury Services Malaysia, and Mr. Doug Moore, CEO, RBC Capital Markets Asia and Head of RBC Investor & Treasury Services Asia-Pacific. We had agreed unanimously that their inaugural Race For The Kids in Malaysia had exceeded the expectations and hopes of the donors, the sponsors, the participants, the organiser, and most importantly, the Charity Partner, Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC).

With my media pass, I was fortunate to meet many participants and experience the many planned activities for that morning. For the record, I have penned below my personal highlights of the proceedings which also include my candid photos and live videos. Plus, I have attached below the official press release for your information.

EVERYBODY WINS

The RM200,000 raised to benefit the Selangor And Federal Territory Mentally Handicap Unit in Brickfields had certainly given a big boost to the good people of RMHC and their President, Victor Sim.

The Donors would certainly be pleased to witness how their cumulative generosity is going a long way to benefit the underprivileged.

Seasoned Runner Amelia

Nicholas (2nd from Right) is a RBC staff

The RBC, their staff and their Sponsors should be really proud to have organised such an amazing addition of the global Race For The Kids which was so well received in Malaysia. By more than doubling their initial collection target, and keeping all the 1,500 participants fully entertained, RBC has successfully delivered on its promise to give back to the local community. At the same time, the RBC Team has set a high precedence for future Race For The Kids and continue their longstanding tradition of raising funds for local projects which will positively impact the lives of underprivileged children.

I asked Doug, “What message do you want the participants to take home with them?”

Doug replied, “I hope that all the participants and the families present had fun, and were able to connect with and get to know one another.”

FUN RUN

There were many activities throughout the morning to engage and excite the participants. In the first part, the crowd loosened-up with an invigorating aerobic session which was followed by the actual 2-loops 5km run around Lake Gardens.

Race Director Niithi (Right)

The course was well set-up by the experienced Race Director Niithi and his 21st Century Sports Crew. Honestly, for a simple 5km Fun Run, I was not expecting to find such top quality race management which certainly made the run much more enjoyable. There were many and well-drilled marshals throughout the course to monitor and assist the parents and kids.

Every measure was taken to ensure the safety of the runners, and this was a good call because there were many children and inexperienced runners about.

In fact, this was the first time that I have seen an ambulance driven slowly in Lake Gardens. So, for delivering the full race experience, from the flag-off to the handing-over of Finishers Medal, I give this event a high rating.

PLAYFUL CARNIVAL

After the run, the participants collected their goodie bags and drinks. I met many runners queuing up for the free snacks and refreshments of Nestle Cheerios, Cold Milo, Hot Caramel Popcorn and freshly made Candy Floss.

The kids were having so much fun meeting playful mascots Leo The Lion, Ronald McDonald and some Star Wars characters. There was a specially constructed Bamboo Playhouse for the kids to climb. The kids were in their element, and there were many more fun-filled activities such as some special dancing and singing performances by handicapped children, plus a stage performance by a magician to mesmerise the crowd.

COMMUNITY REACH

On a more serious note, amidst all the fun times, it was heartwarming to see many citizens of all ages and different backgrounds coming together to play together and help the less fortunate. I could not agree more with the sentiments of one satisfied participant, Clarence Ma who declared, “Great event, hope they do it again next year”….

KUALA LUMPUR, 16 October  2016 – More than 1,500 people walked or jogged through the beautiful Perdana Botanical Garden today in the first ever Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) Race for the Kids in Kuala Lumpur in support of Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Malaysia.

The 5km charity run raised RM 200,000 for RMHC Malaysia to build a Ronald McDonald Sensory Room at two centres in the Klang Valley. The centres nurture the well-being and education of young people with special needs and learning disabilities. The Kuala Lumpur race exceeded its initial fundraising target of RM 90,000, paving the way for RBC and RMHC to double their target and fund an additional room.

“We are thrilled with the response to RBC’s first Race for the Kids in Kuala Lumpur and proud that RBC employees, friends, family and the local community came together to support such an important cause,” said Doug Moore, CEO, RBC Capital Markets Asia and Head of RBC Investor & Treasury Services Asia-Pacific. “RBC has a strong presence in Malaysia and we are delighted to establish RBC Race for the Kids in Kuala Lumpur as part of our global commitment to helping communities prosper.”

RBC established its first office in Malaysia in 2008 and today employs more than 800 people in Cyberjaya and Kuala Lumpur.

Squatting Left: Victor Sim, RMHC

“The support that we received from RBC and the community has been overwhelming,” said Victor Sim, President, RMHC Malaysia. “It was a wonderful event and the funds raised will help children with special needs and learning disabilities develop cognitive skills and build self-confidence in a positive environment.”

RBC Race for the Kids Kuala Lumpur is the latest addition to RBC’s series of 11 charitable runs that support causes in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Trinidad & Tobago, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Increasing in popularity every year, RBC Race for the Kids events have attracted more than 110,000 participants to date, and raised over $CAD 26.5 million for children’s charities around the world. The races are part of RBC’s larger commitment to kids and youth through the RBC Kids Pledge, a five-year, $CAD 100 million promise to improve the well-being of one million kids and youth.

Asean Unity Run & Ride 2016 (AURR 2016) CANCELLED

Asean Unity Run & Ride 2016 (AURR 2016) CANCELLED

Shocking NEWS!

This HIGH PROFILE Run & Ride event has come crashing down hard in flames. Spurred on by their success of last year’s inaugural event when a reported 10,000 runners joined-in, the organiser, Amman Malaysia together with Technical Partner, Twenty First Century Sports and Registration Partner, Runners Asia, had high hopes for equal success for this second edition. With prominent local bigwigs and UNICEF involvements, plus the support of Kementerian Belia & Sukan (KBS) and the Sports Minister KJ himself who attended the grand event launching earlier (read my previous coverage), AURR 2016 was looking promising and expectations were justifiably high. Alas, the high-hopes and confident optimism surrounding AURR 2016, has now been replaced by disappointment and damage-minimisation. What’s worse, the improper manner in which this unwanted episode has been handled has set a lousy precedent for future races. Why, so?! Read my personal views on this and see what you think about it…

RED FLAG RAISED

Firstly, I have no problem about event cancellations or postponements if they are conducted in a fair and professional manner.

However, I am not shy to express my personal views if I suspect that something is seriously wrong about certain episodes passed or actions taken which need to be highlighted, improved and/or prevented in the future. Whether my expressed views are right, wrong or uncertain, I leave it up to you, readers, to decide for yourself.

SORRY IS THE HARDEST WORD

Here are the reasons why the AURR 2016 had ruffled my feathers in more ways than one:-

Take a look at the official statement below and tell me if you can see the word “sorry” anywhere. First and foremost, when you DRASTICALLY change the agreed contents of any event, you must APOLOGISE to your paying customer. This is not an exercise in saving your face, but it is about showing respect to the thousands of Runners and Cyclists who have sacrificed their hard-earned money to pay the registration fee, and they have already arranged their busy schedule to attend your event on the promised date. You don’t need to bow deeply like the Japanese do or grovel, just a simple and sincere, “We are deeply sorry to announce…”, will suffice.

Changing an actual run to a virtual run is not “good news” for the participants, far from it because they were all looking forward to be merrily engaged and entertained on race day by the actual activities which were supposed to be arranged painstakingly by AURR 2016. That was the deal-maker.

A Virtual Run & Ride is totally different to Actual Run & Ride. People’s motives and reasons to take partake in Virtual Events are not necessarily the same for their reasons to join Real Events. Furthermore, to even suggest that by switching last-minute from Reality to Virtual is a good or comparable offering is at best INCORRECT and at worst, it’s DEPLORABLE.

However, you can say that switching to a Virtual Run & Ride, rather than an outright event CANCELLATION, is “good news” for the organiser because they can try to convince the participants to take a lesser value deal without losing the entry fees. Plus, the organiser can get rid of the event T-shirts and medals which I have already been manufactured by hocking it to new prospects.

The official statement on event “recalibration” was only sent-out by email and posted on Runners Asia website. While their official FB Page was suddenly deleted without prior notification.

“Unavoidable circumstances” is just not good enough to cancel an event. The organiser owes a better and more transparent explanation to the Public because it involves a money trail. People may not agree with your reasons, but they will respect you for your honesty.

Previously, the media was given full and timely press release of event launching by the organiser. However, no news were fed to me about these latest significant changes! I only found-out about it by accident. I can just imagine the reactions of my friends and readers who registered after reading my event preview, “What lah, you, Gus.. you recommend lousy event to us!”. Yesterday, I have sent an explanation request to AURR, but I am not holding my breath for a reply.

What I would really hate to see is other event organisers following the same unprofessional actions as AURR, “They did it…so, why can’t we?!”. So, let’s put a stop to this unwanted practices before it grows!

    ONE SILVER LINING

The one important thing that was done right by AURR was the offer for full refund. If you are seeking a refund, please follow closely the official instructions in the photo attached and YOU MUST SUBMIT FULL REFUND REQUEST BEFORE THE DEADLINE OF 31st October 2016. After that date, nobody can help you!

    OAKLEY CYCLING TOUR 2016

    OAKLEY CYCLING TOUR 2016

    Editor’s Note

For heaven’s sake, if you are a cycling event organiser, you should always put the safety of all the riders ahead of any obligations to the event sponsors. Of course, every event company has the right to make a reasonable profit, but never at the expense of safety. From what I could see, this event failed to provide effective precautionary safety measures to properly handle any emergencies, as well as to take necessary care of isolated and slower riders, throughout the ride, by not having in place the following:-

Adequate and effective road and mobile marshals.

    Adequate route signages.

    No checkpoints.

    No sweeper trucks.

Is it fair that an event organiser can get away scot-free for their clear negligence and lack of adequate safety measures because all the participants have been forced to sign a waiver form? Whether it is fair or not, if anything happens to you during an event, no matter who is at fault, you are on your own unless you have a specific sports insurance coverage. Indeed, if you are active in sports, it is worthwhile to consult with the sports insurance expert, Reclaim, and find-out how to mitigate your risk-exposure to sports-related accidents and injuries. Ironically, Reclaim was also one of the co-sponsors of one of this least safety-conscious ride in the whole span of my 5-year cycling experience.

OAKLEY SHADES: The inaugural Oakley Cycling Tour consisted of 3 legs which were staged in Cyberjaya, Perak and Johor in March, April and May 2016 respectively. Under the invitation of the event co-sponsor, Reclaim, I was fortunate to be able join this event whose star attraction was the title sponsor, Oakley – the world famous sports eyewear.

    Date: 27th March 2016

    Venue: Setia Eco Glades Cyberjaya

    Distance: 108km

CYBERJAYA U-TURNS: Admittedly, I still need to rely on street signs whenever I move around Cyberjaya. Sometimes, I make a U-turn because I am supposed to, and at other times, I have to U-turn because I am distressingly lost. Perhaps, it would be easier if Cyberjaya had  one main city centre, so that logic-driven drivers like me can visualise other locations by using it as a reference point. Now, I just feel the Cyberjaya roads are going everywhere, but simultaneously, taking me nowhere!

NO SIGNS: So, it was not surprised that in the beginning of the ride, I ended-up lost and going around in big circles in Cyberjaya. I did stop to ask RELA volunteers for directions, but apparently, giving riders the right directions were not part of their duty. My last hope of getting back on the right track was to rely on the route signages. Unfortunately for me, this race organiser came-up very short when it came to road marshaling and providing adequate direction signages. It was the first time that I can recall of not being to trace the route. Rather than head back to the finish line early, I headed to Sepang and returned to the finish line 4 hours later in the heat. It would have been easy for me to have totally given up, but I was just not prepared to let some missing signages spoil my ride. In the worse case, I managed to clock 68 km and worked quite a sweat too, before joining the hullabaloo at the Finish Area of Setia Eco Glades with the rest of the gang.

HELP YOURSELF: I passed by a few stranded riders who had stopped at the side of the road because they had bike problems, and I knew dishearteningly that there weren’t going to get any help from the missing officials. I did, however, stopped to fix a slipped bike chain of one helpless looking female rider. She told me that she was a new rider, and as soon as I had fixed her chain, she sped-off cheerfully like a captive fish just released into a big pond. Well, if we could not rely for help from the officials, at least, the riders can support each other.

LESSON LEARNT: After the finish line, my consolation prize was a huge and heavy medal for my troubles. Looking back, I realised that I should not have let the brand Oakley influenced my expectations because at the end of the day, the proper management of an event depends on the organiser. Seeing Oakley as the title sponsor, I had naively presumed that Oakley Cycling Tour was going to be a quality event which would have accurately reflected their pretty awesome products. Sadly, this wasn’t the case, and in the end, it was difficult for me to get excited about the whole cycling experience because I felt like the event was a rushed job and many essential and finer details were left-out which left a bad aftertaste in my mouth. As a participant, I felt the organiser was so busy pleasing the sponsors and the VIP Guests that they forgot about taking care of the comfort and convenience of the non-elite riders. Perhaps, Oakley should NOT have opened this ride to the general public and instead, made it a by-invitation only marketing event.

TOO LOUD: The emcee had failed miserably to add any value to the proceedings for 2 main reasons:-

He was shouting so loud into the microphone that it made my brain ached.

He was talking gibberish most of the time, and his whimsical attitude had demonstrated how unprepared he was. I felt particularly sorry for the vendors because the emcee’s ad-hoc description of their offered products, services and promotions felt like he was selling vegetables in the wet market which must have made them cringe.

SILVER LINING: The only event people who were acting professionally and doing their jobs properly were the well-prepared exhibitors such as Casio Exilim Malaysia and the Reclaim team. When I visited their respective booths, I can clearly see that they had put a lot of effort into their displays, and their staff were all very helpful and courteous to the booth visitors.

SPORTS INSURANCE: If you don’t know, Reclaim is a new outfit in Malaysia, and they specialise in providing customised insurance coverage to athletes, sportsmen, and even to the general public who are active in sports. Obviously, when we take part in any sports, we are exposed to accidents and risks of injuries to a large or small extent. Reclaim is backed by a panel of sports experts and doctors who specialise in sports medicine and can recommend the best treatments for all kinds of sports injuries, and help injured sportsmen get back on their feet as swift as possible.

    KEDAH CENTURY 2016 Trans-Asean Express

    KEDAH CENTURY 2016 Trans-Asean Express

    Editor’s Note

I participated in the inaugural Kedah Century 2015, and as you can read in my article, “160km Ride Through Kedah Has Much To Offer” which was published in The Star newspaper, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Kedah and the ride, itself. Therefore, I am looking forward to joining this year’s Kedah Century Trans-Asean Express which will have a totally new route. Furthermore, the organisers have spiced things up by including a unique border crossing stage where riders will be able to experience 30km of Thai roads before crossing back into Malaysia. So, I expect lots of new and exciting cycling experience, but what will never change is the warm hospitality of the Kedah folks and their special food culture. Kedah Century offers an unforgettable ride through striking green rice fields, water canal crossings, and the local cross-winds of the flat plains will test the cyclist’s riding strength and determination. Indeed, there are many interesting cultural traditions in Kedah such as rice-growing and kite-flying which forms part of the rich tapestry of our beautiful countryside – there’s no other ride like it!

ZAMST COMPRESSION WEAR TEST REVIEW & SPECIAL OFFER!!!

ZAMST COMPRESSION WEAR TEST REVIEW & SPECIAL OFFER!!!

    Editor’s Note

Compression Wear is an essential part of the endurance junkies dress code. Normally, I use compression arm and calf sleeves for any long distance cycling or running which helps me;-

    Prevent or reduce muscle fatigue

    Enhance recovery process

    Keep dry from excessive sweating

    UV protection

    Stabilise body temperature

So, when I was offered the opportunity to test some high-quality compression products by ZAMST from Japan. Here below, I have shared the results of my testings.

The fantastic news for you is that I have made a special arrangement with the ZAMST Approved Distributor, EGO NUTRITION, to offer a solid DISCOUNT on their full range of products. Everything you need to know about how to take-up this amazing offer, is described in detail below.

If you are like me, you have to make a lot of sacrifices in order to pursue your passion for sports. Often, it can be frustrating when we cannot afford to shop for the best sporting goods. Therefore, it is important for me, to not just share with you COOL product information, but if I can help make quality products more affordable for my cycling and running friends, that is PRICELESS!

    WHAT IS ZAMST?

Firstly, it’s an acronym for Zing Advance Medical Sports Training. ZAMST is the No.1 COMPRESSION WEAR for Sportsmen in Japan.

    ULTRA TRAIL MOUNT FUJI

This year, ZAMST was exhibited at UTMF EXPO held before the race. Visitors had signing, and photo-shooting session with Sebastien Chaigneau, ZAMST sponsored top trail-runner, Many runners made a long line to have his autograph.

    UNBOXING & TESTING

Being a big fan of the benefits of Compression Wear, I have been simultaneously testing 3 of ZAMST listed below items, during my Cycling and Running Events and Training Sessions in order to find-out how well they perform compared to the other popular brands available in the market :-

ZAMST COMPRESSION ARM SLEEVES. The Arm Sleeves deliver uniform compression from the wrist through the upper arm.

The Arm Sleeve improves circulation, enhances blood and oxygen flow to the muscles and assists in eliminating bi-products (lactic acid). This reduces muscle vibration and muscle fatigue, while improving muscle endurance and recovery. 90 + UV Protection.

ZAMST COMPRESSION CALF SLEEVES. The LC-1 Open Toe G-Fit technology delivers gradient compression from the foot through the calf muscle.

The LC-1 improves circulation to encourage blood and oxygen flow to the muscles. Aids with flushing out bi-products (lactic acid), reducing muscle vibration and fatigue, which improves muscle endurance and recovery.

ZAMST COMPRESSION SOCKS. The HA-1 Short with built in a-Fit technology provides anatomically correct support and fit for the left and right foot.

The HA-1’s functional support and unique knitting technology stabilizes the heel in a neutral position and lifts up the arch of the foot to prevent it from leaning inward. This will minimize the stress from repetitive impact on the foot to reduce plantar fasciitis.

    COMPARABLE TEST RESULTS

The ZAMST Compression Arm and Calf sleeves performed as well as other leading Compression Wear brands, in terms of reducing muscle fatigue and soreness, expediting recovery, giving UV protection, and reducing overheating.

This was the first time, I had worn compression socks because when I tried on a pair earlier from another brand, it felt too tight and uncomfortable. So, I abandoned that idea until I tried-on the ZAMST Compression Socks which fitted my imperfect feet like a glove. Performance-wise, their socks kept my feet dry dry and gave excellent arch support. I cannot wait to use them for Ultra Marathons because my feet get very sore when running more than 10 hours. You can also use ZAMST Compression Socks for long walks without tiring your feet! I will update more on these socks when I have completed longer running distances.

    UNEXPECTED FINDINGS

Apart from meeting my expectations in terms of performance, what really sets these 3 ZAMST Compression Items apart from the other brands is firstly how well they fit without any feeling of tightness. Secondly, the material is so soft and comfortable, and it feels as smooth as silk against my sensitive skin. Before trying-out ZAMST, I have always mistakenly believed that all compression material are either too tight or too coarse on the skin. Therefore, I am extremely happy to discover ZAMST which gives me BOTH Total Comfort and Enhanced Compression. Now, that’s an illuminating discovery….

Watch me put-on my arm sleeves.
Watch me put-on my calf sleeves.
