Welcome to the inaugural Shine Resolution Run 2017!

Race Kit Collection At Mont Kiara

Originally, this event was supposed to be held at Bukit Kiara, but it was switched to the more popular, Padang Merbok because the Organiser claimed that due to more than expected number of registrants, they needed a bigger venue.

Whatever the case, it was my second event at iconic Padang Merbok in 2017, and we’re still only in January! Thankfully, I can never get bored running around the pristine neighborhoods of Bukit Tunku and Kenny Hills. In today’s route, there was a series of testy steep inclines, but fortunately, the air was cooling, thanks to our early 6:20 AM flag-off.

Mr & Mrs Ironman 💪

Calming Serenity

It was a brilliant idea to flag-off this foot race early because this meant that we could finish it before the Sun got uncomfortably hot, and  there were very few road users around to bother us. Only the collective sounds of our shuffling feet and hurried breathing had broken the stillness of that gorgeous morning.

The peaceful ambiance of the exclusive neighborhood of Bukit Tunku and Kenny Hills made it easy to focus on our run or perhaps, to contemplate on our personal New Year Resolution.

More Safety

There were many traffic police, road marshals and RELA personnel to safely guide us throughout the quiet route.

More Drinks

All 3 water stations were well stocked with iced cold water and 100Plus drinks to refresh the runners.

Jonathan (Left) stopping for a cold & refreshing N8 drink

To give the weary runners an additional energy booster, there were premixed icy electrolytes drinks handed out by the lads at the N8 Sports Nutrition station, 2km from the finish.

Distance Markers & Checkpoints

Including the Start/Finish point, there were 3 timing checkpoints to keep the runners honest.

Final Stretch

The distance markers every kilometre from half way point were surprisingly effective in spurring me on to the Finish Line.

That Winning Feeling!

Stylish Finish

The last kilometre was all downhill, and it was a comfortable cruise all the way to the Finish Line.

Neat & Orderly

The final approach to the beautiful Finish Arch was very well designed and cordoned-off which gave every individual Finisher their outstanding moment of glory and personal satisfaction as they crossed the finish line with grace.

Snacks Galore

After receiving our Finisher medals, we were greeted with a wide assortment of popular refreshments and snacks which included freeflow cold isotonic and Milo drinks, Yakult, Nestle breakfast cereals, and hot mini servings of Mamee instant noodles.

Replenishing lost calories

For something more substantial, runners could purchase food and drinks from several available food trucks.

Carol & Kelvin bringing their baby boy for their first family run together

Judging by the many happy faces mingling after the run, the first ever Shine Resolution Run 2017 was a big hit among the crowd of seasoned and community runners.

Top 3 Women’s Champions

The majority of them stayed behind until the end for the Lucky Draw, and to watch the presentation of prizes to the well-deserved podium winners.

Fresh Air & Sunshine

I am sure that many of the participants will happily return next year for more exercise, good times and family entertainment if the good people of Sun Life Malaysia decides to host a promising sequel next year.

How May I Help You?

😍Thanks to my sponsor N8 Sports Nutrition for my invitation to be part of this exquisite event which attracted the best of local elite runners, and thousands of community runners too…

Eyes On Stage

Charitable Act

The best news is that a whopping Rm257,000 was in donations were raised for Hope Worldwide and Diabetes Malaysia, from all the participants fees which was further matched dollar-for-dollar by Sun Life Malaysia. Hereafter, all the donors and everyone who were involved in making this successful event, can start the year in good health, and full of hope and compassion in their hearts!

STANDARD CHARTERED KL MARATHON 2017 SOLD OUT

No Prizes For Spotting Happy Runner

Editor’s Note

In a flash, all of the tickets for the individual running race categories have all been snapped up. There has been an encouraging increase in the numbers for the Full and Half Marathon Categories from previous years.

Although, SCKLM cannot offer USD200,000 Prize Money for the fastest Man & Woman as the Dubai version, Malaysia Runners and KL City are very proud to have our very own topnotch Marathon which offers an unmatched race experience on and off the route. Sadly, given the limited space of the iconic Merdeka Square race venue, the number of Total Participants have been capped at 35k for safety reasons. Sad for those who missed out in securing their individual slots. However, there can be no compromise when it comes to ensuring the safety of the runners and the Public.

Last year, I was able to cover the SCKLM 2016 quite extensively, and with the consent of the Event Organiser, I hope to continue giving my readers exclusive ringside reports of the build up and the race itself, and all the comings and goings of the SCKLM 2017 extravaganza!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STANDARD CHARTERED KL MARATHON 2017 SOLD OUT

Runners snap up all individual race slots within four days

KUALA LUMPUR, 20 January 2017: Dirigo Events, race owner and organiser of the Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2017 (SCKLM), announced today that registrations for the race has officially closed as they have sold out all individual race slots for the event. The Standard Chartered KL Marathon turns nine this year and the 2017 edition will take place on Sunday, 21 May at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur.

“We are grateful that interest in the Standard Chartered KL Marathon is as strong as ever. After our pre-registration period for 2016 participants closed, we opened registrations to the public on 16 January and have sold out four days later,” said Rainer Biemans, Director of Dirigo Events and Project Director of SCKLM 2017. “We thank all our loyal supporters for continuing to support the marathon and will now focus on delivering the best race experience possible,” he added.

An incredible 12,512 race slots were snapped up on the first day of registrations on Monday, 16 Jan, which is about a third of the total number of race slots available. According to Rainer, an encouraging aspect this year was that registrations for the Full and Half Marathon categories sold out quicker than the usually more popular 10km and 5km categories.

“We have been consciously trying to increase the level of competitiveness for SCKLM 2017 and we are very happy to see that the popularity of the longer distances are increasing. In fact, we’ve closed the Full Marathon category with 8,000 runners in total this year, constituting a 7% increase from 2016 and the highest number recorded in this category so far for the Standard Chartered KL Marathon. So for the first time our Running Clinics will have two sessions specifically for runners who are going to attempt their first Full Marathon and first Half Marathon,” he said.

The data gleaned from the Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2017’s registrations this year also show that there will be 1,381 runners from 63 different nationalities taking part, with the highest number of international runners coming from Indonesia (325) followed by the United Kingdom (146) and India (132).

The Standard Chartered KL Marathon has grown to become the premier running event in Malaysia that draws thousands of local and international runners to the country whilst firmly establishing Malaysia in the global running calendar. The 2017 edition of the race will once again see sponsorship from Title Sponsor Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia, along with Honda Malaysia, Brooks, Lucozade, Seiko and Pacific Regency.

Mahendra Gursahani, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered Bank said, “It gives us tremendous pride to be the title sponsor of such an iconic event that has come to symbolise the coming together of communities and fostering nation building through sport. We wish all runners the best of luck and we look forward to welcoming them at the race.”

Elite runners will be competing to earn a slice of the almost RM500,000 in total that is on offer at the Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2017,which include bonus prizes for record breaking course times.

In an effort to reduce congestion and make the race more competitive, SCKLM 2017 will continue with a seven hour cut-off time for the Full Marathon with checkpoints at designated areas along the route to ensure runners are within the specified time frames. Runners who don’t make it to the checkpoints within the required times will not be allowed to complete the race and will be transported to the finish line. This is also meant to ensure the safety of runners as the public roads need to be opened to regular traffic at times strictly stipulated by the authorities.

A perennial feature of the Standard Chartered KL Marathon is its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative Run For A Reason that aims to channel funds raised to deserving charities that assist underprivileged communities and those in dire need. This year the participating beneficiaries are the Standard Chartered Foundation, National Cancer Society of Malaysia, Dignity for Children Foundation and Hospis Malaysia.

Participating runners can also look forward to a total of 12 running clinics that will be provided by the Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2017, including 5 Junior running clinics and specialised clinics for those attempting their first Half and first Full Marathons.

MPI Generali Run 2017 – The Review

MPI Generali Run 2017 – The Review

Event Preview By Gus Ghani

Event | MPI Generali Run 2017

Distance: 10 km & 5 km

Venue | Padang Merbok, Kuala Lumpur

Date | 8th January 2017

Total Runners | 4⃣3⃣0⃣0⃣

Editor’s Note

It is great to see Running Events that ‘Walk The Talk’, and this year’s MPI Generali Run delivered a match-winning Home Run with their recent spectacular running carnival which thrilled thousands of runners at Padang Merbok.
The words that MPI Generali Insurance CEO Oliver Tan had uttered during an earlier press conference, “We strive to be the best mid-sized running event”, echoed in my mind as I realised that this was indeed the best mid-sized run in town! It was superbly organised, thoroughly enjoyable for the participating competitive runners and fun runners alike.

This is precisely the kind of successful event which my wife Maryati and I needed to kick start our new running chapter in 2017.

Swag To Brag
Apart from excellent goodies for runners like chunky medal, stylish running T-shirt, waist pouch, ice-cream, Milo, breakfast cereal, popcorn, candy floss, the event day itself was superbly managed before Flag-off, during the run, and at the post-race carnival.

Enough Elbow Room
The venue layout was designed well which optimised the use of the Padang Merbok Parking Space, and hence, facilitated the smooth flow and inter-mingling of 4,000 happy runners.

Going The Extra Mile
Moreover, I gave special extra bonus points to MPI Generali Run 2017 for :-

Providing timing chip;

Keeping registrants continuously informed and updated on important notifications via email, sms and fb page;

Arranging 4 fun-filled and informative Running Clinic sessions with attractive running vest giveaways for Participants;

Donating pre-loved Tees and shoes to the Orang Asli Communities.

Leading The Way
Dang, it is a double-edged sword to be spoilt with such a terrific event because other fun runs will fall short in comparison. But, I’m not complaining. On the contrary, I hope other Event Owners would follow suit and aim as high as MPI Generali when it comes to giving runners a top quality mid-sized running event.

The X-Factor
Of course, it takes precision planning, abundance of resources, and great support from Sponsors and Event Partners to pull-off a top-class event. What’s less obvious is the phenomenal amount of work carried out behind-the-scenes by the project team of professional and dedicated staff to achieve success. I was fortunate to meet them, and I was most impressed by their total commitment and genuine sincerity to be the best host and to organise the best run possible for the runners.

Kuala Lumpur  –  Princes  and princesses  were sighted at  Padang Merbok  yesterday  but instead  of  running  late  for  a  ball,  they  were running to get  healthier  together  at  MPI Generali  Run 2017.

Pahang International Marathon 2017 (PIM 2017) – PREVIEW

Pahang International Marathon 2017 (PIM 2017) – PREVIEW

Editor’s Note

It’s always exciting when a NEW MARATHON is launched, and we are marking this special occasion by GIVING-AWAY 2 RACE BIBS (see below for details).

Pahang International Marathon 2017 has evolved out of Annual Kuantan Half Marathon (AKHM) which started in 2014 and usually attracts 2,000 Runners from all over Malaysia.

The PIM 2017 Owner and Organiser, Monkey Theory (formerly known as Dusty Monkeys) will need to use all their accumulated organisational and technical skills and experience from AKHM to handle the massive undertaking of a Full Marathon. Needless to say, FM Runners need much support from the organiser to successfully complete 42.195 kilometres. Any unexpected slip-ups, omissions and delays along the route could be disastrous for all parties involved. So, it’s important that we all do our part to make this inaugural PIM 2017 a Big Hit.

Will you be one of the group of pioneer runners who will be blazing the brand new Full Marathon route around Kuantan on 12th March 2017?

🌿Venue | Taman Botani Negara, Shah Alam

🕡Date | 31st December 2016

🌊Wave Start | 6:30pm onwards

🏃Total Participants | 10k

👷Organiser | Monkey Theory🐒

Editor’s Note

While most normal people were celebrating New Year’s Eve by fine-dining, partying and watching spectacular fireworks displays to usher in the New Year, my wife Maryati and I opted to spend the twilight hours of 2016 being chased by mobs of vicious Zombies who were intent on eating us alive!

Thankfully, however, this frightening scenario was just part of a thrilling running game called Run For Your Lives (RFYL) which was organised by event company, Monkey Theory for the 7,000 online registrants who were looking for an extraordinary and action-packed evening.

Surviving The Apocalypse

The objective of this reality game was to run a 5 kilometre loop through Taman Botani Negara Shah Alam and at the same time, avoid being caught by the hundreds of blood-soaked Zombies awaiting at several undisclosed points called Zombie Infection Zone. At the start, each participant had 3 red plastic strips strapped to their waist which represented 3 Lives. If the Zombies remove all 3 strips, then you have failed to complete your mission. You must finish the run with at least one live still intact to earn the finisher medal and the title of Survivor.

The Living Dead

Your enemy are the hideous-looking Zombies whose sole mission is to ‘kill off’ the participants by removing their 3 lives before they cross the finish line and reach back to the designated Human Safe Zone.

For those 2,000 Participants who registered as Zombies, they were given a thorough Zombie make-over at the event venue by professional makeup artists from the event co-sponsor Aery Jo. I was surprised that a company who were used to making people look beautiful did such a convincing job making the Zombies look scary as hell.

My running buddy, Chin Wei Pin, had jumped at this rare opportunity to be able to transform himself into a Zombie character. In fact, the makeup looked so real, that Chin said, “When I posted my bloodied Zombie face photo on Facebook, my Uncle phoned me immediately, because he had thought that I was involved in an accident!”

Running Scared

The thousands of excited runners were flagged-off in several waves under the cover of darkness. Even though we knew that the Zombies were only play-acting, our hearts were still beating fast at the prospect of coming face-to-face with these monsters. It didn’t take long for us to reach the first Infection Zone where a group of Zombies were standing in our way. We ran fast, like our lives depended on it. There were loud screams of panic as the Zombies tried to grab the runner’s lifeline. Fortunately, the Zombies were not allowed to leave the Infection Zone. Once we passed the danger zone, we checked to see if we had lost any lives during the skirmish. The lesser our lifelines, the more desperate we felt.

There were a total of six Infection Zones spread-out over the course, and in addition, we had to endure, crawl under or climb over 4 different obstacles – Crawl Fence, Smokehouse, Ladder and Last Fence.

To keep us in the role-playing mode, we had to walk through the blood-chilling Slaughter House, the creepy Living Room, and the ghastly Slaves Vault. It is here that the hideous screams from the nervous runners were the loudest whenever a Zombie was spotted or heard lurking in the darkness.

The whole setting in the dark jungle was creepy, and the fear of being caught by a Zombie kept us constantly on our toes.

We Can All Be Heroes

Unfortunately, some Runners had losttripped and fell in their desperate attempt to evade capture. Similarly, some Zombies were injured too when they were shoved aside by Runners who had charged at them like a raging bull. These minor mishaps could have been avoided if the safety advice of the Course Marshals was followed.

Interestingly enough, it was our primordial fear of getting caught which forced us to form alliances with the other participants in order to form a formidable group against the brainless Zombies and survive our ordeal. By helping each other, we were able to successfully beat the Zombies and return back to the Safe House in one piece.

Alas, it was great fun pretending to be a hero, battling against evil and saving mankind from the threat of extinction. It was a chance for us to escape our comparatively mundane lives, and act out our fantasy. It was not a hard act to follow because, after all, we have watched and admired our heroes on television and in the movies all our lives.

Dropping The Beat

After Maryati and I returned triumphantly to the place where we first started our night’s escapade, the crowd was grooving to DJ Nikki spinning some hot dance tracks. There was also a hype dance performance by an electrifying K-Pop Troupe.

The party was set to last all night. However, it was way past my bedtime, and so, Maryati and I left the swinging party before midnight. Before we left the scene, we did rewound the clock briefly to the days of our youth, and busted some funky dance moves which weren’t too embarrassing, thankfully!

Herculean Effort

The Organiser, the Sponsors, their Event Partners, and the Volunteers had worked incredibly hard to stage for the 10,000-strong crowd a highly entertaining and most interactive Running Game in town, as well as set-up a lively After-Party with professional entertainers in a fun-filled carnival atmosphere where food and drinks are conveniently provided by several food trucks. I really appreciated all their combined creative efforts.

Wait For Our Lives

Yes, there were some administrative, organisational and technical flaws such as :-

1) The extreme long queues and waiting time of 2 hours to register and collect our entry wristbands had led to unfortunate delays in the flag-off times.

2) There were no water distributed to rehydrate the Runners except for a sweet caffeine-boosting energy drink called Ranger. To make matters worse, we were not allowed to bring our own drinking bottles into the event venue which forced us to buy our drinks from the food trucks vendors.

3) The concrete paths were too narrow for the big crowd which led to some nasty collision between the Zombies and the Survivors.

Cult Status

It is evident from the huge turnout in 2015 and 2016, there are many fans of Horror, Zombies, as well as those who just like to be scared senseless. So, for the sake of weirdos like me who are fascinated by urban legends and  supernatural myths, I hope that the Event Owner will outdo themselves in the 3rd installment of Run For Your Lives in 2017…

KEYBOARD WARRIORS STRIKE AGAIN!!

KEYBOARD WARRIORS STRIKE AGAIN!!

Warning: The Following Are The Ramblings Of A Delirious Delinquent!!

How Did It End Up This Way?

Last year, if you told me that Donald Trump is Presidential Candidate, I would have asked you to fly a kite! Even more, if you told me that Donald was going to end-up in the White House, I would have seriously questioned your sanity! Similarly, if you said China Inc. would own the World or United Kingdom was leaving the European Union, I would have locked you away in some padded cell for your own safety.

Alas, many weird and unexpected things have become our reality! There are many factors which have led us down this unfavorable path. To me, I blame the breakdown of good common decency on Societies who measures a Man’s worth by his wealth. This inhumane principle which encourages GREED has been created and maintained by the Rich Elite because in giving the poor masses an unattainable dream, the poor will believe they are worthless and they will continue to respect the Rich and keep them in power unknowingly.

Some of the Poor are so desperate to chase wealth that they lie, cheat and kill each for a share of the small pie. Again, this kind of scenario will keep the poor masses weak, and keep those in Power, in Power!

It’s sad to see Brothers killing Brothers, and Sisters killing Sisters. The poor masses have been brainwashed to knock each other down, and as a result, we would rather see people fail than succeed. The praises and awards that we give each other is only for show, but deep down, we despise those people who are more Successful or Better than us.

I used to complain that the French are arrogant people, but now, I realised that such arrogance is a by-product of their Society who values highly equality (‘égalité’) for every citizen. Guess what, I wouldn’t mind people calling me ‘arrogant’ if it means that in exchange, my Society will treat each other with the same respect. No, no, not here sadly, where the bigwigs are above the Law!

What’s My Point?

So, it really irritates me no end, when I see a small fish unfairly knocking down someone or some organisation when all the accused is trying to do is earn a decent living.

So, my message to those out there before you condemn anyone or organisation out there on the Net, take a good look in the mirror first and ask yourself:-

Can I privately express my grievances directly to the other party first?

How big is the scale of my problem? Does it justify condemning a person’s life or a company’s reputation?

How would I feel if someone said the same things about me?

Always make friends, and not enemies because you never know who’s help you will need later in life.

Are you being a good-for-nothing whinger?

Have you offered any positive advice or proposed a solution to the problem.

Don’t believe everything you read in the newspaper. Do your own research before you blindly follow the crowd. Condemning some one or organisation with others, will not necessarily mean that you are more correct. Be Your Own Man! You don’t need others to tell you how to feel, surely?!

Don’t even believe the words of your friends, and seek unbiased 3rd party opinion, before shooting off your mouth.

Complaining should be your last resort, not your first actions.

Be very sure about your statement because the other party may have many unseen friends and supporters who don’t take kindly to your accusations, justified or not.

Don’t let your emotions get the better of you: If you’re angry, sleep it off, and review the problem when you have calmed down.

When you say nice things, people will naturally say nice things about you. If you say bad things, bad karma will pay you a visit unannounced.

People don’t trust people who talk bad about other people because if you can do it to them, you can also do it to us!

Go Off Line

Things got a lot less friendlier when we started spending more time hiding behind the computer screen. So, let’s make a point to meet each other face-to-face more often. Now, that’s a novel idea.

p.s. I hope my American friends don’t hate me for belittling their new President or they might send the CIA around..Gulp!

The Best Of Cycling And Running 2016

The Best Of Cycling And Running 2016

Editor’s Note

Year 2016 has been one helluva ride for me personally with lots of unexpected global events unfolding. They say that challenges are great opportunities for rebuilding and progress. If that is so, then we ought to be making lots of progress!

It has not been easy to balance family commitments with work and play time, and I must thank my wife, family, partners and supporters for all their mammoth support to help me continue chasing my dreams. It is to you all that I dedicate my achievements and good work. Without your unflinching support, my life will be so dull. However, with you guys by my side, I believe that I can do just about anything! I can never be able to repay your trust and support, except to give my best in all my endeavours.

Since this will be my last blog for 2016, I would like it to end it on some good news…

Back-To-Back Publications

As I reported earlier, my running story about my first SCKLM 2016 Pacer Duty was published in Malaysia’s No.1 Running Magazine, RUNNING MALAYSIA Issue 19 (Sep/Oct 2016). Now, it gives me great pleasure to report that my cycling article on PJ Community Ride 2016 has just appeared in Malaysia’s top cycling magazine, Cycling Malaysia Issue 42 (Dec 2016/January 2017)! Many thanks to the Editorial Team of both Running Malaysia and Cycling Malaysia for bestowing upon me this huge honour.

Running vs Cycling

I really enjoy Running and Cycling equally for different reasons, and to be able to enjoy both activities is to be blessed. Therefore, please don’t ask me which is better or ask me to choose between the two, because I can’t and I won’t for now, atleast.

I have been privileged to be able to join some spectacular cycling, as well as running events in 2016. From which, I have met so many great cyclists and runners – too many to mention.

To summarise my dual love of cycling and running :- to be able to do both gives me double happiness, and when I can write and share about both these adventures with my readers gives me Quadruple Happiness!!!!

Plan For 2017

I hope to continue learning, developing, improving in all areas, and live life to the fullest.

I will be very selective when it comes to joining any events because I plan to spend more time with my family. Perhaps, go for more holidays and indulge in more of life’s simple and rewarding pleasures like food, history, culture, community work, reading, travelling, etc. Anything as long as I can broaden my horizons.

Good Bye 2016, Hello 2017

Before the internet crashes on New Year’s Eve, I wish you all a Happy, Successful & Healthy New Year 2017🎉

OSIM Sundown Marathon Penang 2016 – The Review

OSIM Sundown Marathon Penang 2016 – The Review

China Bunnies

Event: OSIM Sundown Marathon Penang

Date|Flag-Off: 17th January 2016 | 11:59pm

Venue: Queensbay, Penang

Distance: 21km, 10km and 5km

Total Runners: 2⃣6⃣0⃣0⃣

Editor’s Note

Traditionally, December is a time when there are no major running events because many people are away on annual vacation or they are busy, rushing to meet Year-End work deadlines. Besides, it’s our national wet season and thunderstorms are frequent.

Nevertheless, with the growing demand for running events, there is no longer any off-season per say in our running calendar, except for the fasting month of Ramadan. Interestingly, Sundown Marathon Penang debuted during the Island’s busiest holiday season. Sure enough, on that Sundown Marathon weekend, Penang was bustling full of camera-clicking holidaymakers who were rushing from one tourist spot to another.

Whenever I visit Penang, it always evokes fond memories of happy childhood memories and unforgettable family vacations. This time, there was the added thrill of participating in the inaugural Sundown Marathon Penang which was part of Sundown’s 10th Anniversary celebrations. It just doesn’t get better than having Singapore’s leading running brand appear at our favourite Runcation destination, and I was lucky to be there to witness the beginning of a new night running tradition.

Read about my exciting Sundown experience and the official media version below…

Parit Buntar To Penang

After completing the first ever 16KM Parit Buntar International Triangle Run on that Saturday morning, I returned to my motel to freshen up and eat lunch before hopping on the Rapid Penang bus to Butterworth. The one hour non-stop bus journey followed the toll highway, and amazingly, it only cost 4 ringgit!

Nostalgic Ride

At the Butterworth Bus Terminal, I walked to adjacent Ferry Terminal, paid the RM 1.20, and hopped onboard the iconic Penang-bound ferry. I leaned against the iron gates at the very front of the ferry, and took in the magnificent views of the Straits. The combination of the slow movement of the ferry, the salty sea breeze and the sight of Penang Island drawing ever closer was both mesmerising and relaxing. It’s these unexpected pockets of serenity and fleeting moments of reflection which takes me to my  happy place.

Tourist Heaven

After alighting the ferry, I boarded a bus which took me practically to the doorstep of my accommodation for one night, the Olive Tree Hotel in Bayan Baru. Along the way, the bus passed through George Town, and I was amazed to see so many tourists sightseeing on foot and on bicycles in order to catch a glimpse of Penang’s many spectacular national heritage sites. Many happy couples, families and friends can be seen pedaling on rental bikes; on two-wheelers, tandem and four-wheel bicycles.

Tip Top Service

Checking into Olive Tree Hotel was a breeze, and I was delighted when the friendly hotel receptionist offered to book me a shuttle bus ride to and from the race village! That would do me nicely, thank you😁

🏰My room on the 16th floor was like a palace compared to my previous night’s tiny lodging in Parit Buntar! As soon as I unpacked my stuff, I had a refreshing shower before immediately heading out the door to meet my friends at a nearby swanky coffee joint for a round of last-minute carbo-loading of spaghetti carbonara accompanied by a tasty cup of green tea latte – that would do me nicely, thank you very much!

Then, it was back to my room for some badly needed shut-eye😴

Race Venue

At 10:30pm, the hotel mini bus took me to the race village in Queensbay like a rockstar where I collected my bib from the Media Tent. There was just enough time for me to survey the race village and mingle with the excited runners. I met a couple of 21km runners from China who looked cute wearing lit-up bunny ears. I bumped into several running buddies from Kuala Lumpur who were raring to make an impression with their running prowess. There were also many fans of Sundown Marathon present who were soaking-up the lively atmosphere of the race village.

Midnight Ravers

The runners were entertained by a groovy live musical band performances and a rigorous Zumba workout which was followed by a screening of Transformer 6.

At precisely midnight, the 21 KM runners were ceremoniously flagged-off by Adrian Mok, Managing Director of HiVelocity Events Pte Ltd and John Cheong, Sales Director of OSIM. The 10k and 5k runners had followed shortly after.

From Queensbay, we headed along the seafront towards Penang’s second bridge. The 21k route used mostly the highways underpass and overpass which meant the road was in good condition and well lit. The fully and partially closed lanes with strategically placed street cones gave a safe distance between runners and any late night traffic. There was a constant sea breeze to keep us cool, and there were ample water and isotonic drink stations to keep our thirst at bay. My only gripe was that there were one too many long loops which stirred up some feelings of drowsiness and dejavu. My internal biological clock was set on sleep mode, and towards the end, I was fantasising about jumping under my warm bedcovers which was waiting for me, back at Olive Tree Hotel. When tiredness set in, my legs and feet were becoming unbelievably sore and tender. By this time, I was on survival mode, and it was a huge relief to finally cross the finish line in one piece and with my sanity still intact.

The podium finishers were presented with their well-deserved prizes, and soon after, my shuttle bus was ready to take me home at 4:30am. As I left the race village, I saw the clean-up party busy at it and the groups of volunteers waiting for their buses to depart. It was the end of a long night on the back of a similarly long day.

King’s Buffet

Keeping true to the tagline, “Sleep Can Wait”, I resisted the obvious temptation to call it a night and crash-out upon reaching my hotel room. Against the odds, after cleaning myself up, I made my way down to the coffee house for my well-deserved breakfast. Although the 21k almost knocked me out, I was now eating like a true Champion, and I even surprised myself by eating porridge, nasi lemak, Spanish omelette, cheese macaroni, as well as some English breakfast staples. After my hearty breakfast, I had enough reserved energy to roll into bed with a big smile of satisfaction, and I was fast asleep even before my head had touched the pillow.

Barrier To Entry

A great running event is never built in a day. It takes years of practice and hardship to reach perfection. At the same time, the total number of participants doesn’t necessarily reflect the quality of an event. As for Sundown Marathon’s first showing in Penang, I see all the makings of a phenomenal running event in the near future. Moreover, I could see that the Organiser was determined to replicate the success of Sundown in Singapore. However, it will not happen on the first or even maybe the second attempt because the working culture in Malaysia is very different from that of Singapore. Even Malaysian Event Companies have a hard time dealing with the Local Authorities to obtain various necessary permits, and I have witnessed many local events go sour because of restrictions or last-minute changes imposed on them. It takes great persistence to chip away at these working barriers which could otherwise jeopardise the best laid plans. Consequently, to save time, many organisers end-up towing the official line and give in to concessions which can compromise the quality and efficiency of local-staged events.

A Bright Start

The debut of Sundown Marathon Penang is commendable, and they certainly looked after the interests and convenience of the participants to ensure a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Like many Sundown Marathon fans, I sincerely hope that we see more of Sundown Marathons in Penang and perhaps, in other parts too.

Acknowledgements

I thank Sundown and OSIM for giving me the opportunity to be a part of their prestigious midnight run, and wish them a Happy 10th Anniversary🎉

A special shout-out to Aw Li-An and Jomanda on being such fabulous hostesses👏

Last and not least, I must congratulate all the amazing Crew, Partners & Volunteers on a superb show.

MEDIA RELEASE

For Immediate Release

2,600 runners sacrificed sleep to run the night at the first edition of OSIM Sundown Marathon Penang 2016

PENANG, 18 Dec 2016 – THE 1st edition of OSIM Sundown Marathon Penang proved to be a stepping stone for Singapore’s iconic home-grown night run as it ventures overseas into Penang. The event attracted more than 2,600 runners.

Penang hosted over 500 international runners from countries such as Singapore, Kenya, China, Indonesia and the Philippines while providing the perfect platform for Penang’s running community to run together. The theme, “Sleep Can Wait” challenged runners to sacrifice sleep and run through the night while enjoying the beautiful night skyline of Penang.

At 12.01am, 12.05am and 12.10am, runners for the 21.1km Half Marathon, 10km Challenge and 5km Fun Run race categories were flagged off respectively. Runners who wanted to finish the race at a specific time had the help of pacers who were easily identified by the helium balloons showing the targeted finishing time.

Supporters and finishers of the run were treated to exciting activities in the Race Village, such as band performances by Shades of Dreams and overnight movie screenings of blockbuster favourites such as Transformers: Age of Extinction.

“We are extremely pleased with how OSIM Sundown Marathon Singapore has evolved to become one of the signature sporting events in the regional running scene. We have been planning for regional expansion for several years now, and we are glad to be able to organize a successful race today in Penang for Malaysia. It is a stepping stone for us and we will only get bigger and better in years to come,” said Adrian Mok, Managing Director of HiVelocity Events Pte Ltd, the organiser of OSIM Sundown Marathon Penang.

John Cheong, Sales Director of OSIM, flagged off the various race categories. He said, “We’re really happy to see how the runners enjoyed themselves through the night. The spirit of the marathoner resonates with OSIM because we believe in challenging your spirit to do your best. Not only have these runners completed the challenge to sacrifice sleep, run through the night, and beat the sunrise, they also embodied strength, courage and passion. For those who took on the 5km Fun Run for the first time, we believe that this is merely the start of a healthy lifelong journey ahead of them. Our aim is to inspire well-being to everyone from all walks of life and we also wish to contribute to Malaysia’s running scene in every possible way.”

The best Malaysian timing for Men’s Half Marathon category was Ow Yong Jin Kuang, who crossed the finishing line with a timing of 01:22:27, and came in fourth behind African runners Kiptoo Joackim Kemboi (3rd), Biwott Justus Kipruto (2nd) and Njoki Charles Munyua (1st).

“This race is very different from the usual ones that are carried out in Penang. The race village is filled with exciting activities, it was so easy to go about in the race village where everything was organised and made easy for the participants as well as supporters. It was an enjoyable run, and I will definitely be joining Sundown Marathon Penang again,” said Ow Yong Jin Kuang.

Meanwhile, Yee Pei Ni had the best Malaysian timing for Women’s Half Marathon category, with a finishing time of 01:40:23, coming in second behind Towett Cynthia Chelangat.

“It was an exhilarating experience to be in this race, the race route made it easy to be able to keep up with my usual pace. The race village makes you feel like it is the place to be, they made sure everyone was well taken care of. There was a Zumba workout to help participants warm up for the race, and band performances that kept everyone pumped up. It was really exciting to be part of the first OSIM Sundown Marathon in Penang,” said Yee Pei Ni.

About Sundown Marathon

Organised by Singapore-based company HiVelocity Events, Sundown Marathon injected a jolt of energy into Singapore’s running scene when it became the nation’s first night marathon in 2008, and the event hasn’t looked back since. From a humble attendance of just over 6,000 in the first year, Sundown Marathon’s registration is expected to reach 30,000 in 2017, making it Asia’s largest night marathon once again.

Being the nation’s first night race to be nominated twice for the prestigious International Sports Event Management (ISEM) Awards and, more recently, Marketing Events Awards, for the Best Sport-Oriented Event, Sundown Marathon has fearlessly gone where other running events fear to tread.

Sundown gave running fanatics the perfect opportunity to test their limits with Singapore’s first ultra-marathon lasting through the night in 2008. In 2012, Sundown Marathon moved into the city and became the nation’s first night running event to flag off at Nicoll Highway. Since 2013, Sundown put on a show under the stars at the renowned F1 Pit Building, dazzling runners with Zumba sessions, live concerts by local band 53A, a food and beverage village and VIP packages.

For the 10th edition of Sundown Marathon, there will be four race categories – 5KM Fun Run, 10KM, Half Marathon and Full Marathon. Sundown Marathon is the perfect platform for runners of all levels, giving them the chance to step out of their comfort zone and challenge their limits, whether they are true blue running advocates or casual fans.
