Vomos Challenge 2018 – Preview by Happy Runner

IMG-20180514-WA0000

Editor’s Note

As far I can recall this will be the FIRST RUN to be held at Citta Mall, and looking at the route map most of the run will take place around the perimeter of the prestigious Saujana Golf & Country Club and its surrounding affluent neighborhood where the roads are wide and partially shaded with many trees lining the quiet road.

To make this run worthwhile, I STRONGLY recommend you pick up the early bird rates of RM55 & RM45 for the 10km & 5km respectively.

The lucky draw prizes as mentioned below are very ATTRACTIVE if you can catch them, and knowing the usual GOOD STANDARDS of the Organiser PACERS SPORTS, I would expect an enjoyable outing for participants.

Caution, Slow Rider Takes On Lekas Highway!

Caution, Slow Rider Takes On Lekas Highway!

rbt

Editor’s Note

Today is the race kit collection for RHB Shimano Lekas Highway Ride 2018 (see below for details), and the numbers of participants have grown significantly to reach 5,000 riders for this upcoming 4th continuous night edition.

The 120km category is expected to challenge the best riders, and if last year is anything to go by, there will invariably be several truckloads of cyclists who are expected to DNF (Did Not Finish) for underestimating the long route.

Fear not because no matter what happens on race night, there will be no losers because a bad day cycling outdoor in the countryside is still better than any good day in the work office.

What really amazes me about Malaysia’s Only Highway Night Ride is witnessing the glorious sight of thousands of enthusiastic cyclists, from all walks of life, converging on Lekas Highway to do what they love – cycling.

rbt

One such rider who is set to make his second appearance at Lekas Highway Ride 2018 is the affable Faizal Sohaimi, and I was glad to catch-up with Faizal and find-out more about his deep bond with cycling, and why he enjoys this particular Lekas Highway night ride….

START-UP: About 4 years ago, Faizal Sohaimi invested in a foldable bicycle to commute to work. Since then, his cycling interest has expanded to touring, participating in many cycling events like RHB Shimano Lekas Highway Ride, and when he’s not riding, Faizal spends his time building or upgrading his bikes himself. The fact that Faizal has converted one of his rooms into his personal “bike cave” speaks volumes about his commitment to, and passion for Cycling.

SELF-RELIANT: Faizal has attended a bike repair workshop before, in order to learn how to repair and maintain his bicycles in case of breakdowns during long touring trips. However, when the bike repair jobs are too difficult or they require specialised tools, Faizal will visit his master bike mechanic, Akmal of The Basikal shop in Bangsar for technical assistance.

MENTAL MECHANIC: Faizal loves to constantly tinker with his bicycles, and he gets a big kick out of reassembling vintage steel bikes and perhaps, give them a new lease of life with some modern upgrades.

btr

“I like working with steel frames because you can bend them in different directions whereas carbon frames are built to withstand force only from certain angles,” explained Faizal.

FIND-OUT IF Faizal’s passion for cycling is just a wasteful obsession or is it the perfect outlet to  channel his energy, creativity and skills for greater good.

PENTA KILO CHARITY RUN 2018 – A Review by Happy Runner

PENTA KILO CHARITY RUN 2018 – A Review by Happy Runner

cof

Editor’s Note

SO MANY FREEBIES! Being a “social influencer” does have its perks such as invitations to premiers, free running slots, access to VIPs, and even free products. Nevertheless, in the end my allegiance is to upkeep the integrity of sports as much as possible, and to be open and impartial in my reporting as humanly possible.

GETTING NOISY! Having said all that, it’s easy to lose track of  the pure joy of and original reasons for running when there are so many commercial influences and temptations bandied around at a time when the running & cycling market for mass events become bigger and more lucrative.

IMG_20180721_142822_833

RUN WITH GRATITUDE! What’s all this got to do with Penta Kilo Charity Run? Firstly, I chose to join this small run which was organised by the UiTM students because I think that it’s important to support local & community based runs, as well as to support the YOUTH projects which can BENEFIT the community. Secondly, this kind of simple running event attracts the type of runners who run for pure & HONEST reasons such as for fitness, friendship and fun.

IMG_20180721_142213_483

This positive spirit is REFRESHING change from the whiny attitude of runners joining big commercial running events who complain about everything, from the Tee and medal designs to the natural weather. Of course, if you’re paying a high price for registration, then I can understand why the runners expect more stuff for their dollar – even if their demands are unreasonable.

IMG_20180730_215945_170

In short, I make a point to occasionally participate in small INDY runs like Penta Kilo Charity Run 2018 because it reminds me of what running ought to still be about….

Good Old Fashioned Fun Run

cof

There were no other bloggers covering this event because they didn’t rate it as a “quality” event, and because there were no extra perks, privileges or gifts made available to them.

IMG_20180730_215521_876.jpg

sdr

However, I felt privileged to witness the JOYFUL faces of the runners – husbands, wives, parents, children, friends, colleagues, lecturers and students- as they crossed the finished line and HUMBLY received their medal and a sling bag filled with a bun, an apple and a mineral water bottle.

cof

For including me in this WONDERFUL event, I sincerely thank, the Organising Committee, Dr. Yasmin, Ridzuan, the Penta Kilo Run Crew, and congratulate them too for an AMAZING race debut! Apart from making the participants HAPPY, a few thousand ringgit was also raised for Mercy Malaysia as part of the charity drive.

TRUE CHAMPIONS Featuring Malaysia Race Walker Elena Goh

TRUE CHAMPIONS Featuring Malaysia Race Walker Elena Goh 🇲🇾

IMG_20180805_220205_200

Editor’s Note

Last Friday, I dropped by at a Sports Exhibition which was held at PWTC. I had only recognised the Aftershokz Booth where Deric and his team were displaying the new TREKZ AIR model of the latest conduction based, wireless music headphones which were designed for sports people and athletes who want to listen to music EFFORTLESSLY and SAFELY, while playing their favourite sports.

Unexpectedly, I managed to catch a live interview of Malaysia’s super talented national Race Walker, Elena Goh. Her personal story is truly inspiring and interesting, and so, I decided to share my short video and commentary of that Elena interview here….

Video Clip: The Interview

FAMILY SUPPORT
Elena Goh Is Only 22, but she has already overcame a double knee operation in 2012 to secure Malaysia Gold at SEA GAMES 2017 in Kuala Lumpur.

During the interview, Elena mentioned that she decided to pursuit race walking at school after seeing how much happiness her sports victories had brought her parents. Such motivation was touching to hear, and it tells me that that her parents must be extremely proud of Elena’s sporting achievements.

ELENA’S PERSONAL BEST

Her 10km Race Walking PB is 51’42” which is incredibly fast when we consider that most amateur runners struggle to run 10km in an hour or less!

IMG_20180805_220205_217

PERSONAL SACRIFICE

Only an extraordinary person could and would continue training vigorously for 5 years, despite suffering knee injuries, in order to achieve their dreams. That’s exactly what Elena did! She had paid a heavy price for delaying her knee operation until her knee made a strange sound with 1km to go during a 20km international race in 2012 in Singapore. Coming 4th placed there was a small compensation because she had to immediately undergo a double knee saving operation.

LOW TO HIGHS

Being in peak physical condition is a prerequisite for every national athlete, and so, I can only imagine the stress an athlete has to bear whenever they go under the knife. Fortunately, Elena’s operation and rehabilitation was a success. However, what I find so inspiring about Elana’s story is how she managed to bounce back from her serious injury woes and major operations to reach her dream of winning a gold medal. Of course, every athletes trials and tribulations are uniquely different, and some are not as lucky to be given a second chance at pursuing victory. Nevertheless, victory at the highest level must be earned, and it is all about being ready and taking your chances when the right opportunity comes along. No one personifies the strength to overcome their personal setbacks like Elena has so clearly demonstrated by winning her first gold medal at the KL Games 2017.

IMG_20180805_220205_204

PETITE FIGHTER

Elana is small built and in terms of physical appearance, I won’t be surprised if many people couldn’t believe she’s a top national athlete, never mind being a SEA GAMES Champion. This is a real life example of why we should never judge a book by its cover, nor should we underestimate anyone so easily. I’m sure that proving the doubters wrong can be a strong motivation for athletes like Elena to push them to train and compete even harder.

THE FUTURE

Fortunately, Elena is still young, and as long as she continues to remain hungry for more victories, I can foresee an illustrious sports career for this little tiger that dared to roar…

🔆CYCLING TIPS – Routine Bike Service

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

TUNE-UP

Before every road race, I recommend that you send your bicycle to a bike repair shop for a routine check-up and maintenance service. A bike mechanic only charges RM30 for a standard service which includes checking and fine-tuning the wheels/tyre, the gearing and the brakes, as well as a bike wash.

Some cyclists prefer to service their bike on their own. However, since I have no interest in tinkering with the bike components, I leave it to the professionals to do that for me, and I don’t mind paying a small sum for that expert service.

My mechanical bike skills are restricted to changing a flat tyre and fixing a loose chain if and when they occur during my rides.

Besides, servicing my bike gives me a perfect excuse to visit the bike shop and gawk at the latest cycling gears and exciting new gadgets.

SPARE TUBE

Frankly, the most common mechanical problem that can occur is getting a punctured tyre. Therefore, as a responsible cyclist, you must always carry a spare tube kit during every ride.

PUMP IT

You should also make it a habit to always carry a handheld pump in order to inflate the spare tube should you need to change to new ones.

THREE STRIKES

Another very important tip for cyclists is to always check for any sharp objects inside the tyre, BEFORE you fit in the new tube. When I was a rookie rider, I had replaced a punctured tube 3 times IN A ROW with borrowed ones, and each time, the tyre would get flat again. Then, a more experienced rider, asked me to check the inner lining of my tyre, and sure enough, I had discovered a tiny metal pin embedded inside – no bloody wonder! That was such an embarrassing rookie mistake, but it had taught me a valuable lesson – be it the hard way! At the same time, I realised then just how generous and helpful cyclists can be, because this stranger gave me all his spare tubes without expecting me to pay or replace them. It was this humane gesture which made me think, “if all cyclists really looked after each other this well, then, I too want to befriend such amazing guys!” From then onwards, I have had great respect for fellow cyclists, and I am lucky to have enjoyed many sensational rides with the best people in the world who treat others so well, without expecting anything in return, except for your cycling company.

CYCLING BROTHERHOOD

You will notice that every time a cyclist is stranded by the roadside, passing cyclists will always stop to help. There is a strong bond among passionate cyclists, and everyone seems to follow an unwritten and universal code of conduct – leave no rider behind. Meaning that if you see a fellow rider in trouble or distressed, you should always offer to help them, regardless if you know them or not.

This is how real cyclists support each anywhere in the world, and this system of PAYING IT FORWARD works well in the cycling community.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

TO RECAP

✔️ Keep your bike in good working condition.

✔️ Always carry a spare tube kit and a pump.

✔️ Check tyre inner lining is free from sharp or loose objects BEFORE replacing punctured tube.

✔️ Support each other whenever necessary because cycling is a team sport – even when you’re riding solo!

IJM- ALLIANZ DUO HIGHWAY CHALLENGE – My Afterthoughts & The Official Story

IJM- ALLIANZ DUO HIGHWAY CHALLENGE – My Afterthoughts & The Official Story

rpt

Editor’s Note

In its second year, the IJM- ALLIANZ DUO HIGHWAY CHALLENGE has successfully sealed its place as the BEST Double Highway Run Series in Malaysia’s Running Calendar. Here Are 10 Reasons Why…the team of event organisers and partners deserve high praises for their hard-earned efforts :-

  1. All important event information was well communicated. In particular, the registrants were continuously provided with useful and relevant information updates, guidance and tips in a timely manner via official social media platform, as well as via direct emails.
  2. The runner’s entitlement pack collection (repc) which took place in a spacious venue, namely Sunway Velocity mall, was conducted smoothly, and ample time of 3 days was allocated for registrants to collect their race kits. Furthermore, there was a nice festival area at repc venue where the registrants could grab great deals from the event partners and vendors including running gears and accessories.
  3. The Besraya Highway Challenge Running Clinic which was conducted by a running coach at Taman Pudu Ulu had helped runners to undergo some theoretical and practical training. See my related blog post https://gusghani.com/2018/04/20/besraya-highway-challenge-2018-running-clinic-race-day-programme/ .
  4. The sensible lay-out and space management at both race venues greatly helped with crowd control and eased crowd movement, before and after the race. Even with so many runners, it was easy to access the start pen, and right after the finish line, there were clear direction for the collection of Finisher Tees and refreshments. Also, there was ample space for the finishers to chill-out in groups. Under the influence of wonderful weather and the freeflow refreshments, the comfy runners were in no hurry to leave.
  5. The well-maintained motorlanes make Besraya & NPE the best road running routes, besides a cushioned running track.
  6. During the race, the runners were well supported by the cheerful and helpful crew of volunteers, marshals and medics, especially at the water stations which were well stocked with cold drinking water and isotonic drinks.
  7. There were many distance markers dotted along the route, and roads were well lit. Obviously, the absence of motor vehicles and outsiders allowed all the participants to run safely and without having to breath in exhaust fumes.
  8. The Finishing Area was extremely well cordoned off which meant that every runner could enjoy a clear path to the finish line, and shortly beyond that, the drink, banana and sandwich stands gave runners an instant energy boost!
  9. There were many manned counters to  collect the ever important Finisher Tees.
  10. As expected, the amazing prizes for the Champions had attracted a star-studded, international and local field which resulted in a highly competitive race with fast timings in all categories.

The downside of setting the quality bar very high is that our expectations for next year will be even higher. I’m sure that with the same level of will, determination and commitment by the proven Organising Committee, we can look forward to BIGGER and BETTER things from Duo Highway Challenge 2019….

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release

9,000 PARTICIPANTS RUN ON TOTALLY CLOSED NPE HIGHWAY AT THE IJM- ALLIANZ DUO HIGHWAY CHALLENGE

Runners get a chance to explore the all-new Pantai Sentral Park interchange before heading towards Pantai Dalam and finally racing towards the finish line at Sunway Pyramid

Subang Jaya – 29 July 2018: This year’s IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge 2018 ended on a high note, witnessing the determination and strong will of every runner who huddled through the finishing line as they took full advantage of the opportunity to run on a totally closed highway. The New Pantai Highway (NPE) attracted more than 9,000 runners from all walks of life who started their run from Sunway Pyramid, making their way through the all-new Pantai Sentral Park interchange towards Pantai Dalam before returning to the finishing line, while thoroughly enjoying the breathtaking view of the sunrise against the city skyline.

After a successful debut last year and due to popular demand, an international category was introduced to attract international participants which drew interested runners from all over the world including Kenya, Australia, Scotland, France, Japan, Singapore, India, Iraq, Italy, and Hong Kong.

The final leg of this year’s IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge saw runners crowding the roads of the New Pantai Highway (NPE) from as early as 4.30am waiting for the flag off. The flag off time for 21km was at 5.30am and 6.30am for 10km.

Runners who also completed the first leg of the challenge at Besraya Highway in April were excited to give their best in the second leg at NPE Highway to claim the title as the Champion of the IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge. The final winners were selected based on the fastest combined timing from the 21km and 13km at the NPE and Besraya Highway Challenge respectively.

The IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge was held in collaboration with IJM Corporation Berhad (IJM) and Allianz Malaysia Berhad as the title sponsors. Organised by Besraya (M) Sdn Bhd (Besraya) and New Pantai Expressway Sdn Bhd (NPE) under IJM’s toll division and EC Pixels, the organizers took extra measures and precautions to ensure the safety of the runners with a fully closed highway, and most importantly, making sure the participants have a great run.

The supporters and finishers of the NPE Highway Challenge also participated in exciting activities at the Race Village, which include performances from dancers to pump up the runners, cheerleaders and drummers that cheered the runners as they made it to the finish line, as well as various challenges and photo booths by sponsors.
rptDato’ Soam Heng Choon, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of IJM Corporation Berhad said: “Once again, we are thrilled to be the venue partner for this event. The IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge has been providing a positive experience of running on a totally closed highway and has established itself as a unique event for sports enthusiasts of all levels. We hope to continue providing a safe and well-organized venue for the runners. At IJM, we have a lot of passion for sports and we are committed to hosting an event that promotes healthy lifestyles and wellness, as well as community engagement, all the while having a great time doing it.”

Zakri bin Mohd Khir, CEO of Allianz Malaysia Bhd said: “It was great to witness thousands of local and international runners living a healthy lifestyle by taking on the Duo Highway Challenge. This has assured us that our efforts in supporting initiatives that advocate healthy living amongst fellow Malaysians is paying off well. Working together with IJM has always been rewarding through our mutual support for such running events where there is a growing interest for people to lead healthier lifestyles by participating in running events. Allianz will continue to support and promote events such as these to benefit the community and encourage people to live healthy.”

The winner of the NPE Highway Challenge for 21km Men Open’s category goes to Poo Vasanthan Subramaniam, with timing of 1 hour 14 minutes and 31 seconds. Meanwhile, Muhaizar Mohamad took second place with the timing of 1 hour 14 minutes and 41 seconds. The third placing goes to Anas Rosli with timing of 1 hour 15 minutes and 25 seconds.

Sheela Samivellu took first placing for the NPE Highway Challenge for 21km Women Open’s category with a timing of 1 hour 26 minutes and 45 seconds. Second placing goes to Chua Khit Yeng with timing of 1 hour 33 minutes and 44 seconds. Third place goes to Noor Amelia Musa with timing of 1 hour 34 minutes and 34 seconds.

OVERALL MEN’S OPEN CHAMPION

With his combined timing from the Besraya Highway Challenge, Poo Vasanthan Subramaniam, was named the Champion for the IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge Men’s Open Category. Poo said that “I am happy to retain the title as the Champion. The new Pantai Sentral Park route was a bit tough because it was hilly. However, the beautiful view from the hill makes it all worth it.”

OVERALL WOMEN’S OPEN CHAMPION
“I am very happy to win the Champion of Duo Highway Challenge Women again this year. Although this year’s run was very challenging, I am happy that I managed to win 3 prizes, the Overall Champion for Duo Highway Challenge in Women’s category, 1st place for 21KM Women’s Category and 2nd placing for the International Category. The new route was a bit demanding but at the end of the day, it is all about mental strength and I managed to pull through,” said Sheela Samivellu, the Champion for the IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge Women’s Open Category.

🎭4th SELANGOR INTERNATIONAL INDIGENOUS ARTS FESTIVAL 2018

🎭4th SELANGOR INTERNATIONAL INDIGENOUS ARTS FESTIVAL 2018

IMG-20180730-WA0003

Editor’s Note

The Orang Asli (OA) population of Peninsular Malaysia is made up of approximately 180,000 people who are believed to have settled here 6,000 to 8,000 years ago.

The Orang Asli live off the land – the jungle provides them shelter, food and livelihood, while the rivers are their water supply. Unfortunately, in certain areas like Gua Musang, Kelantan & Pahang, the encroachment of outsiders on their land, illegal logging and deforestation have left many OA communities facing extinction of their traditional lifestyle. Without clean rivers and  rainforest, the Orang Asli cannot eat, drink nor can they support themselves economically.

The OA deserve to live peacefully, and their traditional rights must be respected, protected and upheld as the primary gatekeepers of our ancient rainforest. We can learn so much about sustainable coexistence with nature from the Orang Asli, and we must stop the massive pillaging and exploitation our natural resources and wildlife for selfish economic gains.

In a small, but important way, we can show our support for our indigenous people by making an effort to understand and empathise with them, and give them the necessary support to continue their important traditional values….

So, this arts festival is an ideal opportunity for city-dwellers to meet, connect and interact meaningfully with representatives of the Orang Asli without having to trek deep in the jungle…

New🔥 GCE DUATHLON 2018 – Preview by Gus Rider

GCE Duathlon 2018 is Malaysia’s no.1 closed highway duathlon. Participants can enjoy the outdoors in a safe and traffic free environment. Catch EARLY BIRD registration until 5 Aug!

Editor’s Note

🌟SPECIAL ONE: There are a couple of Duathlon Events around, but none captured my attention as much as this GCE Duathlon 2018: After all, it’s the First Fully Closed HIGHWAY DUATHLON, and How Great Is That !!

👎SAFETY LAST: Road & Race Safety has always been a constant HOT issue among sports event organisers, the wary participants and the general road users. Only when there is a road fatality during races, the event safety aspects & precautions will be publicly debated, but sadly, all will be too late for the victims and their bereaving families.

👎RISK TAKERS: Since the participants must sign a WAIVER FORM before the race, it is ultimately up to the individual to decide if he/she feels that the racing conditions are SAFE ENOUGH to proceed or to abandon the race. Of course, the level of safety perception varies from individuals, organisers and the concerned authorities. Without any international and enforceable race SAFETY GUIDELINES available, runners, cyclists, triathletes and duathletes have to make their own race safety assessment and act accordingly.

👍 CAR-FREE HIGHWAYS: It is very expensive to totally close a major toll highway to hold events and forego the lost toll revenues. Moreover, it’s a very long and complicated process to obtain the necessary approvals and permits from all the many relevant authorities to close any toll highways. As a result, not many organisers would dare to embark on such a mammoth undertake.

👍 GO, GO, GO GoSportz: Luckily for the Sports Community, event organiser GoSportz has finally managed to confirm Malaysia’s First Closed Highway Duathlon which will aptly take place on Malaysia Day, 16th September 2019.
