Date: 10 Jan 2016

Venue: Padang Merbok, KL

Editor’s Note

✔1st Time Ran with Wifey on her birthday ✔2nd MPI Run after 2012

🏃This is a hugely popular event among our local running community to gather and kick-off the new year with a timed run around the beautiful neighborhood of Bukit Tunku.

🌽 With many food stalls giving-out yummy snacks & drinks at the after party, the participants use the opportunity to wish each other a bright New Year and exchange running stories.

🎂🏃🎈

MPI Generali staff were so kind to give my birthday girl presents & chocolates🍫

The atmosphere was carnival-like, and everyone was in good spirits, buoyed by the hopeful prospects of a fresh start in a brand new year.

SCKLM 2016 REWIND by Happy Runner

SCKLM 2016 REWIND by Happy Runner

Gloria (L) and David (R) at Media Appreciation Tea

Editor’s Note

TIME FLIES: It’s only been 5 months since we ran and happily painted Kuala Lumpur with the official colours blue, green and white of Standard Chartered Kuala Lumpur Marathon. Now, the registration process of SCKLM 2⃣0⃣1⃣7⃣ has already started to fill-up the 35,000 slots for the Big Race scheduled for 21st May 2017.

THE BEST COVERAGE: To get you in the mood for SCKLM 2017, I have listed herewith my favourite blog postings on SCKLM 2016 which is a useful predictor on what you can expect next. Dang! I hadn’t realised that I had written so much about SCKLM 2016 until now!? But then again, there was so much of interesting stuff to write about. Hopefully, SCKLM 2⃣0⃣1⃣7⃣ will prove to be equally fulfilling for the Runners too.

TRAIN FOR IT: I always recommend to new runners and parents who want to encourage their kids to run that they ought to register for SCKLM, and make full use of their comprehensive and complimentary Running Clinics plus Junior Running Clinics. As for regular and seasoned runners, these systematic running clinics are a great addition to your usual training programme and race preparations because you can tap into the technical expertise of the Event Owner/Organiser DIRIGO EVENTS S/B. Running Clinic 2017 details are not available yet as of today.

COUNTDOWN CAPER: If you decide to register for SCKLM 2⃣0⃣1⃣7⃣, do get involved as much as you can with the preliminary pre-race countdown activities because they will ultimately contribute to making your RACE DAY more enjoyable and more memorable – trust me on this!

“Hello 998, We Got Ourselves An Emergency!”

“Hello 998, We Got Ourselves An Emergency!”

The Disappearance Of Pisho

Yesterday, late afternoon, our kitty Pisho went missing without a trace! We searched up and down our streets while calling his name. Pisho knows his name, and being a talkative cat, we expected to hear his familiar voice responding to us. Unfortunately, there were no sign of our furkid anywhere.

Sleepless Night

As night fell, our neighborhood search became more frantic. Our fear for Pisho’s safety increased as we started imagining Pisho being injured and helpless in a cold place.

Clueless Cat

Being an indoor juvenile kitty, we knew that Pisho would not be able to find his own way home nor does he have the skills to survive outdoor overnight.

It was getting late, but we were too worried to sleep. I tried to remain calm by holding on to the hope that perhaps, a good Samaritan had found and kept Pisho. Whatever the case, I was prepared for a full search as soon as daylight.

Next Morning

“Pisho is up the neighbour’s tree!” exclaimed the Missus.

“Wait, I’ll get the ladder,” I replied.

Sure enough our little Pisho was precariously perched 30 feet up a tree. It was too high to reach with the ladder, and the tree was too fragile to be climbed!

Emergency Rescue

In sheer desperation, we called the fire brigade for help. Within 20 minutes one huge fire truck and an accompanying ambulance had reached our home.

One young fireman quickly shot up the tree, but he was told to come back down by his big chief who was concerned that the bending tree was about to snap under his weight.

The second rescue attempt involved another fireman climbing up their own long ladder. It was a tense moment, watching the fireman reaching for the nervous Pisho. Will Pisho jump? By this time, several neighbours were witnessing the whole drama unfold like a bad reality TV episode.

Final Act

After several attempts, the fireman managed to grab our furkid and he passed Pisho to me who was standing on my neighbour’s 2nd Floor balcony, directly underneath. I released a big sigh of relief as I clutched Pisho in my arms.

The whole episode was a dramatic and tense affair, and I could not imagine how much more intense it would be, if it was a real fire rescue with human lives in danger! However, I can be sure of one thing, these brave fireman really have our backs when we need them most. They are my real-life Heroes….

IOI Obstacle Run 2016 – The Review

IOI Obstacle Run 2016 – The Review

Contestant lending a helping hand

New Event: IOI Obstacle Run 2016

Date: 4th December 2016

Venue: IOI Galleria, Bandar Puteri Puchong

Run Format: 5km + 10 Obstacles

Categories: Men/Women Open, Men/Women Veteran, Couple Run, and Family Fun Run

Flag-Off: 07:00am

Total Participants: 600

Organiser: D’Rozza Enterprise

Editor’s Note

Obstacle Racing is lots of fun and at the same time, it gives participants a chance to test their fitness level, agility and body strength. So, I was excited to join this new obstacle run with my wife Maryati, especially since the Organiser declared that their obstacles would not be difficult to handle because the event was designed to encourage all community members and families to get down and dirty by engaging in a healthy activity together.

Pauline (2nd from Left) with her family & father Frank (Far Right) was the Women Open Champion🏆

Back2Back

The night before, Maryati and I had ran 10km at the Ice Watch Light Up The Night Run 2016 (read about IWLUTNR16) on the public roads of Shah Alam. The very next morning, we were facing a totally different physical challenge on a vacant land in Puchong which was owned by the Title Sponsors, IOI Properties.

Sleep can wait

Warm-Up & Dynamic Stretching

There was a well choreographed and vigorous aerobics session arranged for the participants to adequately warm-up and stretch their muscles. I noted that some of the more competitive obstacle racers had their own warming and stretching routines. After jumping around to the music and following the aerobics instructors  movements on stage, all of our hearts were pumping faster which felt most invigorating, and more importantly, it helped to clear my sleepy head.

📹Here are a few short video clips of that pre-race aerobics session – Clip 12 & 3.

Interval Flag-Off

To avoid bottleneck situations during the race  the runners were released in waves according to their different categories.

📹Here are video clips of the exciting start of the MEN OPEN (Clip 4), WOMEN OPEN (Clip 5), and VETERAN (Clip 6) Categories.

The Full Course

For the first 2km, participants had to make their way across some open dirt track and some shaded trail (Video Clip 78 & 9).

Thereafter, we had to navigate and complete 10 consecutive obstacles which were well spaced apart. As you can clearly see from my photos below, the obstacles involved some jumping across rows of tires, jumping into and wading through muddy waters, and rope climbing among others. Nothing too strenuous at all. I was more busy taking photos and videos of the contestants in action than thinking about my own performance.

My favourite obstacles were the Commando Crawl, where participants had to crawl under wires on their bellies across slick mud (Video Clip 10 & 11), and the Wet Drain, where we had to scurry along some dirt trenches (Video Clip 12 & 13) like a startled rat.

Classic Commando Training

Wet Drain obstacle should be renamed Rat Hole

Other obstacles were the D’Rozza Lake (Video Clip 14), IOI Canal (Video Clip 15) and the hardest obstacle was Horse Jumping (Video Clip 16) where we had to clamber awkwardly over a series of four 1-metre high segments of huge concrete pipes.

After the last obstacle, it was a short run back to the Start/Finish Line where we were given our medal and a much needed snack pack (Video Clip 17).

I was surprised to see quite a few regular runners take on this course. Perhaps, they had lived near the venue. Or is the popularity of obstacle racing spreading among the running community? As usual, there was plenty of time afterwards to catch-up with familiar faces while snacking on bananas, buns and free iced coffee.

📹Knocked Off My Feet

In the end, prizes were presented to the Top 5 fastest finishers in every category. Lucky draw winners received gifts from the sponsors, and one lucky girl pocketed the grand prize of rm500 cash!

The Rise of OCR in Malaysia

Eversince Viper Challenge staged their 1st 21km Obstacle Challenge at Sepang International Circuit in 2012, Obstacle Challenge Racing (OCR) is building into a popular activity under its own right.

Already, there are a couple of high-end OCR events such Spartan and Viper who each organise 3 series of events annually in Malaysia.

Then, there are a dozen other local event companies who are offering their own version of OCR.

Although, these various OCR events may differ in their obstacle designs, venues and registration costs, they all originate from the military commando training principles for hardening soldiers and keep them battle-readied.

In the civilian version, the contestants are forced to use their strength and wit to overcome all the obstacles. Often, contestants will help one another if necessary, and it is this show of mutual respect and camaraderie between the contestants which makes OCR unique and addictive to the legions of OCR Fans out there.

Taking Baby Steps

Normally, OCR organisers will highlight how tough their obstacles are, in order to attract more participants and excite challenge-seekers. Therefore, it was a great idea by Organiser D’Rozza and Sponsor IOI Properties to introduce an obstacle course for beginners, and yet still maintain the essence of obstacle racing. The end result was lots of fun for all participants from the fitness buff to beginners alike.

The obstacles were practical and effective, and there were no major bottle-necks and no long queues to slowdown the participants.

There were enough marshals and volunteers along the route looking after the safety of the participants, and they were helpful and friendly (Video Clip 18).

The water station was well stocked and managed.

Of course, there are some areas for technical improvements, but overall, I highly commend the Organiser and their amazing Crew for a splendid job and for delivering a fun-filled event at an affordable fee for those who cannot afford the premium fees of other branded OCR events.

Not forgetting to thank the Sponsors and Event Partners who added value to the proceedings with their generous contributions.

Last and not least, it was the sportsmanship of the fun-seeking participants who made this event most memorable…

Parit Buntar is the northernmost town in Perak which was once famous for her sugarcane plantations during the British Colonial era.

So, this new Parit Buntar International Triangle Run 2016 boasts the unique title of “1 Run in 3 States”. I love local runs like this one because it takes you on a mini tour of back town Malaysia where the folks still congregate at old-school coffee shops for some good old fashioned local breakfast and idle chit-chat. For leisurely runners like me, this kind of small town runs allows me to explore our countryside and learn something about our local history, and revisit the past through the local traders and sellers who have kept their traditions alive from generation to generation.

On the other hand, for the serious runner, there is a whopping RM25,000 worth of cash prizes and hampers to be won!! SO, HURRY! HURRY! HURRY!

MPI GENERALI RUN 2017 – Graduation

MPI GENERALI RUN 2017 – Graduation

Editor’s Note

The sixth annual community run of MPI Generali is happening at Padang Merbok on 8 January 2017. This a proven quality mid-sized running event, and traditionally, it will be the first official run of the New Year for many of the 4,000 registered runners.

Over the past 4 months, the running community was invited to participate in 4 training sessions called ‘My First Run Clinic’ which were held at Sri Hartamas.

The last running clinic session (Graduation Run) was held on 10th December 2016, and at the end, all of the participants were treated to a hearty breakfast. Read the official statement below for more information on the Graduation Run.

Another important aspect of this session was that it also marked the first collection date for preloved shoes and t-shirts to be donated to the Orang Asli Community under a CSR initiative named Project Good Deeds. Read the official statement below for more information on Project Good Deeds.
I managed to giveaway only 12 of my Running Tees because earlier in the year, I had already donated 40 Tees to the homeless in Kuala Lumpur.

Nevertheless, it does not matter how many preloved stuff that you can give, nor do you have to be a registered participant. Plus it doesn’t even have to be ‘running’ shoes and t-shirts to be accepted. The satisfaction of giving to a worthwhile cause and at the same time, help save our environment, is PRICELESS. So, please donate what items that you can by going to the following Collection Points at the date and time stipulated below.

💠COLLECTION POINTS

1st Collection (Graduation Run)

10 Dec 2016 – Sri Hartamas, 7:30am-9:30am

2⃣nd Collection (Race Entry Collection)

5-7 Jan 2017 – Sports Hub, Lot 10 Shopping Mall, 12pm to 5pm

📜OFFICIAL STATEMENT
My First Run Clinic wrapped up with Graduation Run Guest speaker YK Lim shared on the winning mindset Session ended with Graduation Breakfast.
Kuala Lumpur – MPI Generali Insurans Berhad last Saturday wrapped up its My First Run Clinic programme for the year with Graduation Run at Sri Hartamas large playground. The general insurer organises the clinic programme as a complement to its annual community run, MPI Generali Run, to help amateur runners and participants learn more about the healthy activity and how to do it correctly.

For all four sessions this year, My First Run Clinic features avid casual athlete YK Lim as guest speaker and product sharing from clinic partners Pilatique Studio, Garmin Malaysia, 2XU Malaysia and Hammer Nutrition.
YK started Graduation Run by sharing about the winning mindset before the participants broke into three loops of practice run.

Upon returning to the playground, Hammer Nutrition enlightened the participants on proper fuels and supplements for endurance athletes. The session ended on a celebratory note with Graduation Breakfast.

The first collection of Project Good Deeds was also made during the session. The CSR initiative seeks to reduce the impact caused by solid waste on the environment by collecting pre-loved sports shoes and tees from MPI Generali Run’s participants.  The collected shoes and tees would be donated to the Orang Asli community, with this year’s collection going to Kampung Orang Asli Bakar Leleh Bumbum, Pulau Carey, Selangor; Kampung Orang Asli Pulau Carey, Selangor; Kampung Orang Asli Batu Semenyih, Selangor; and Kampung Orang Asli Sebir, Negeri Sembilan.

Ice Watch Light Up The Night Run 2016

Ice Watch Light Up The Night Run 2016

Event: Light Up The Night Run 2016 #IWLUTNR16

Distance: 10km and 5km

Date: 3rd December 2016

Flag-Off: 8:00pm (delayed 15mins)

Venue: Plaza Shah Alam

10km Participants: 2,000

5km Participants: 4,000

Editor’s Note

If truth be told, no one, including Event Organiser The Marathon Company (TMC), had expected the number of registrants to virtually double to 6,000 for this second edition of IWLUTNR compared to the 3,500 runners at last year’s debut.

This exceptionally large sign-up rate can be attributed to :-

  • the giveaways of 2,000 Ice Watch timepieces which gave each registrant a favourable 1-in-3 chance of winning a fancy Ice Watch worth Rm599.
  • the availability of 6 different T-shirt colours from which to choose rather than having the Event Tee colours determined by the Event Owners.
  • many runners, having enjoyed themselves enough during last year’s IWLUTNR, had decided to return for more fun.

The Marathon Company is building quite a good reputation for itself as a reliable organiser who balances well the interest of the participating runners with the requirements of the Brand Sponsors.

For my second Light Up The Night Run, I was enlisted as one of the Fun Pacers which had proved to be a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding experience…read on to find-out why?

A Colourful Picture

By giving a choice of 6 different striking T-shirt colours, the runners are able to personalise their night running experience. At the same time,it is more likely that the runners would wear the official Tee during the event when they have chosen the colour themselves. This is also good for the Sponsors in terms of brand exposure. The combination of all the runners wearing bright blue, green, red, yellow, purple and pink T-shirts made for a bright and spectacular display. Although, the Tee colours were different, their same designs still helped maintained semblances of uniformity and unity.

Run With Purpose

One of the universal appeal of running is the fact that we can all run for our own individual reasons. For my sister-in-law, Marina, who is a two-year Cancer Survivor, she was running for health reasons. While my wife, Maryati, was keen to regain back her running prowess. On this night, I was running for the satisfaction of helping other runners find their pace.

So, if you ask any runner why they like to run, they’ll tell you their personal stories of how running became an integral part of their lives. Once, we are bitten by the Running Bug, it is difficult for us to imagine a life without running after that.

10km Fun Pacers

One of the elements which make Light Up The Night Run unique and fun is the presence of the Fun Pacer Team who are entrusted to run at a constant pace of 6 to 71/2 minutes per kilometre which is distinguished by the respective Pacer’s different balloon colours.

My Pacer Team of 5 runners were assigned a pace of 8 minutes plus per kilometre, and our main duty was to ensure that there were no 10km runners being left behind alone as a safety precaution.

Labour Of Love

As the last Pacer or Sweeper, my team had to push those runners who were running below their true capabilities, and at the same time, accompany those runners who could not run faster than 8 minutes/km.

To my surprise, there were a few runners who were unlucky to have injured themselves or had to undergo operation only after they had registered for the event. Rather than forfeit the run, they gallantly decided to join the run anyway. It didn’t matter how slow the runners were, our gang of 5 Sweepers still managed to  patiently accompany them right to the Finish Line.

Making Some Progress

In only my second stint as a Pacer, I realised that being a Pacer is more than being able to run at a constant pace and motivating others. You also need a large dose of patience and empathy, especially if you are a the last Sweeper.

Judging from the feedbacks of the runners, the Pacers did a splendid job and they were much appreciated by many of the runners, even for a short distance of 10km.

I still have much to learn about the art of pacing, and given more such opportunities, I know that I can improve on my pacing performance overtime.

Bigger Crowd, More Fun

From my standpoint, the venue space was better utilised and the human flow at the Finish Line were better managed than last year. Some people may have found the venue overcrowded, but to me, the crowd adds more buzz and excitement to the post-race party which in turn, gives the atmosphere a carnival-like feel.

Better Route, Smoother Run

The route was straighter and less complicated than the previous year. The stationary and mobile marshals, volunteers and Medics should be congratulated and rewarded on a great job looking after the runners welfare.

Learn From The Past

It is obvious from the many improvements undertaken that The Marathon Company had listened to the critics of last year’s event and subsequently, TMC has made the necessary adjustments and modifications in order to make this year’s event EVEN MORE ENJOYABLE than last year. Furthermore, from what I read in Race Director Benz’s post analysis, TMC has already identified more areas for improvement which is good news for its supporters. I am sure that many runners, like myself, are looking forward to an even GLITZIER RUN in 2017…

OSIM Sundown Marathon

MEDIA RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OSIM Sundown Marathon ventures into Penang this December with a mission to attract 5,000 runners

PENANG, 8 November 2016 – Asia’s largest night marathon and Singapore’s iconic home-grown night run, OSIM Sundown Marathon celebrates its 10th year anniversary next year and it is marking this milestone with the launch of its first overseas races in Taipei and Penang.

Running enthusiasts in Penang will soon get to run through the night and beat the sunrise, joining their Singapore counterparts in the unique Sundown running experience. The Penang edition of OSIM Sundown Marathon will be held on 17 December 2016 in the heart of Bayan Lepas near Queensbay Mall, Penang.

Targeting runners of all fitness levels, the run will feature 5KM, 10KM and 21.1KM race categories. In addition to a memorable night racing experience, runners taking part in the 5KM run can look forward to receiving an exclusive race singlet, a 5KM finisher’s medal, personalized race bib and a goodie bag with sponsor’s products. Runners taking part in the 10KM and 21.1KM runs have an additional personalized electronic race certificate with race timing.

OSIM Sundown Marathon Penang will be supported by OSIM, the global leader in branded healthy lifestyle products. The strong partnership seamlessly combines OSIM’s mission of inspiring well-being with the Sundown Marathon’s aim of creating an all-inclusive fun and healthy environment for families and friends to enjoy as they run through the night.

“The spirit of the marathoner resonates with OSIM because we believe in challenging your spirit to do your best. The OSIM Sundown Marathon 2017 is particularly exciting as it will be running in Penang and Taipei. It makes our partnership more significant as Malaysia and Taiwan are two of the key countries where OSIM is present. This shows the entrepreneurial drive of the organisers in growing the sport and as a Singapore brand who has gone before, we are happy to help promote Sundown to these new markets,” said Mr Ron Sim, Founder, Chairman and CEO of OSIM International Pte Ltd.

“We have been planning to go regional for quite some time, and with Sundown celebrating its 10th year, it is timely for us to go abroad to reach out to more people in different countries. The Singapore edition has attracted a significant number of foreigners, an indicator of the popularity of the race. Specifically, 20% of our overseas runners fly in from Malaysia to run in Sundown Marathon Singapore. We are aware that Penang has a very large running community and are excited to bring the race there to allow more Malaysians to experience the magic of night racing. We’re also grateful to OSIM for lending their continuous support, as this marks a major milestone for Sundown,” said Adrian Mok, Managing Director of HiVelocity Events, the organiser of Sundown Marathon

Touted as Asia’s largest night marathon, the annual run has seen a steady increase in its participation. Its ninth edition in 2016 saw 27,500 runners run through the night – a five-fold increase from its humble beginnings in 2008. The 2016 race in Singapore featured over 40% of overseas race entrants from countries such as Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan and China – underscoring the appeal of the event as well as the thriving sports tourism industry in Asia.

About Sundown Marathon

Organised by Singapore-based company HiVelocity Events, Sundown Marathon injected a jolt of energy into Singapore’s running scene when it became the nation’s first night marathon in 2008, and the event hasn’t looked back since. From a humble attendance of just over 6,000 in the first year, Sundown Marathon’s registration is expected to reach 30,000 in 2017, making it Asia’s largest night marathon once again.

Being the nation’s first night race to be nominated twice for the prestigious International Sports Event Management (ISEM) Awards and, more recently, Marketing Events Awards, for the Best Sport-Oriented Event, Sundown Marathon has fearlessly gone where other running events fear to tread.

Sundown gave running fanatics the perfect opportunity to test their limits with Singapore’s first ultra-marathon lasting through the night in 2008. In 2012, Sundown Marathon moved into the city and became the nation’s first night running event to flag off at Nicoll Highway. Since 2013, Sundown put on a show under the stars at the renowned F1 Pit Building, dazzling runners with Zumba sessions, live concerts by local band 53A, a food and beverage village and VIP packages.

For the 10th edition of Sundown Marathon, there will be four race categories – 5KM Fun Run, 10KM, Half Marathon and Full Marathon. Sundown Marathon is the perfect platform for runners of all levels, giving them the chance to step out of their comfort zone and challenge their limits, whether they are true blue running advocates or casual fans.
