Running Toons Is Off & Running!

Running Toons Takes-Off!

Introduction
Running Toons (RT) is the brainchild of Fitness Coach/Sports Writer Gus Ghani (aka Happy Runner and Runner/Artist Wen-Li (aka LOTR: Life On The Run).

No run is complete without a Selfie!

No run is complete without a Selfie!

What is Running Toons?
RT is a safehouse where runners can have a good laugh at themselves in an interactive and harmless way. Through Gus’s keen observations & Wen-Li’s talented drawings, we can take a look at “The Lighter Side Of Running” through the funny media of cartoons, and hence, the name, “Running Toons”.

How Did The Idea Originate?

Cartoons are universal & timeless!

Cartoons are universal & timeless!

Gus explains, “Runners are fanatical about running, and sometimes, runners’s obsessions are so extreme & weird that it becomes hilarious. We are obsessed about our timing, our training, our running shoes, our medals, etc. It cannot be healthy to be obsessed with something so much that one becomes out-of-touch with reality altogether. Thus, I created Running Toons to encourage runners to NOT take life & running too seriously, by sharing with them, some funny running jokes and stories.”
Gus added, “I am fortunate that my RT co-founder & artist Wen-Li is also a runner who understands well the Runner’s Mind. Together, we hope to entertain runners with unique illustrations of our special brand of running humour.
Wen-Li share, “I hope we can inspire more people to take-up running for their health through a fun & unique way”.

Open Invitation
We invite you to be part of Running Toon’s extended family, and share your opinion and comments. Hopefully, one day, with your support, we can be a running comic of which all Malaysians can be proud!

Allianz Pacesetters 4 x 3km 2015 Press Conference

It was a wet Friday afternoon as I entered the Kiwanis Hall at Taman SEA, Petaling Jaya where representatives from the Title Sponsor Allianz Malaysia Berhad, the Event Organiser Pacesetters Athletic Club (PAC) members, the Charity Partner Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation (KDSF) National Centre & Members of the Media had gathered for the 2nd Edition of the Allianz Pacesetters 4 x 3km 2015 Press Conference (PC).
The short video of last year’s relay run showed alot of happy runners having a good time.
The PC Opening Address was presented by Mr. Wan Yew Leong (President of the PAC), and he explained to the audience the reasons why a relay event is a fun & exciting running format.

Wan Yew Leong's rendition of "I did it 30 years ago".

Wan Yew Leong’s rendition of “I did it 30 years ago”.

He added that with the mushrooming of many local running clubs & groups, a relay event is an ideal way for runners to work together as a team & compete against other running groups and/or just have a fun chilling-out with fellow runners. Furthermore, Mr. Wan pointed out that under the special donation Kiwanis Pace It Forward category, a total of 50 teams took part in their inaugural event in 2014, from which a commendable RM54,600 was raised and donated to their charity partner, KDSF. This year, PAC aims to raise more money by setting a higher target of 70 teams under the donation category. Interestingly enough, Mr. Wan’s relationship with the international organisation of Kiwanis started 30 years ago, and he did admit that while participating in Kiwanis Treasure Hunts, he did take notes on how they organised such an event which helped him later in organising his own events.

Next, the audience was introduced to En. Zakri Khir who is the CEO of Allianz Malaysia Berhad. En. Zakri Khir is a down-to-earth gentleman, and he presented his speech about Allianz’s intentions as the Main Sponsor, concisely & eloquently. En. Zakri said, “We are looking forward for many to participate in this 4x3km run as it is not only an interesting relay race that promotes a healthy lifestyle, but it is also for a good cause. Through this, we also hope that Down Syndrome will get the awareness it deserves”.
Incidentally, Allianz has been sponsoring the Penang Bridge International Marathon for 3 years until 2014. Thereafter, Allianz decided to sponsor their own running events such as this one and their first Allianz Pacer Run on 6th December 2015 at Putrajaya which has a 12km & 6km category. All 4,000 slots have sold-out.
Two years ago, Allianz Malaysia initiated a Running Community programme known as the Allianz Pacer Running Community, built on social media tools, to encourage more people to start running for a healthier lifestyle.

 C & D – RM120 per team

SCKLM 2015 – Back On Track

image

SCKLM 2015 – The People’s Marathon

They say that you never know just how much you appreciate something until you are about to lose it. Same can be said for the SCKLM 2015; a few weeks ago, so many registered runners showed their intense displeasure of SCKLM’s announcement to change the event date from 04 October to 10 October for reasons which they deemed as unjustified and unwanted. A week later, SCKLM 2015 reversed its unpopular decision, and reverted back to the original date of 04OCT to the huge relieve of the running community. This moral victory came at a cost because it has shaken the runner’s belief in the good judgement of SCKLM’s Management, and it meant that some runners will still miss-out running in SCKLM for moral or logistics reasons even after SCKLM quickly implemented “Cancel The Cancellation” policy. Consequently, there are some untaken running slots, and for those people who did not or could not register for SCKLM 2015 earlier, are now given a chance to submit their registration BUT it will be balloted. Some observers argue that balloting is another added complication and increased tension to the whole scenario. Personally, I feel it is good enough to simply reopen registration and let the public grab the available slots on a first-come-first-serve-basis without the added drama of balloting.

FOLLOW-THROUGH
In golf, when a golfer swings his club at the ball, it is important to have a good follow-through after the clubhead has impacted the golf balk to ensure a smooth & accurate shot. In SCKLM 2015’s case, in a way, the runners have won a moral victory to revert back to the original date of 04OCT, but what will happen next year or upto 2018 when the agreement between Standard Chartered Bank and Event Owner/Organiser, Dirigo Events, expires? For now, I want to join SCKLM 2015 because it is my way to register my support for SCKLM to keep doing what they do best – Organising Awesome Marathons!

Below is the latest official update from SCKLM 2015.

SCKLM 2015 – IS IT TIME TO FORGIVE?

SCKLM 2015 – IS IT TIME TO FORGIVE?

After the recent running community’s recent victory to revert SCKLM race day back to 04102015, there are still many people still sore about the whole unsightly spectacle: There are some wounded pride, some time & money wasted, and some uncertainty hanging in the air about SCKLM’s future.
In the past 7 years, SCKLM has given us the best of what running can give – it has helped  so many people realised their running dreams, channeled much needed funds to the underprivileged, and brought influx of foreign currencies & popularity to our shores, to our majestic capital of Kuala Lumpur in particular.

In life, if we never make mistakes, then we might be doing the right things wrongly or the wrong things well. Through genuine mistakes, we have the golden opportunity to learn & improve, instead of wallowing in our comfort zone.

They say that inorder to move on from a unwanted situation, you got to learn to forgive which is an integral part of the healing process.

I have forgiven SCKLM for the errors of their ways, and I will continue to support SCKLM A-Team for putting Malaysia unto the World Running Map & to keep adding credibility, integrity, and professionalism into our youthful and growing running community PROVIDED THAT there are no regretful outside interferences.

Join me now ( https://www.facebook.com/gusghani/posts/10153507166847079 ) & support SCKLM 2015 (again) for the sake of Malaysia’s running future!!

See you all on 4th October 2015 when RUNNERS will rule KL once more!!
A message from SCKLM :-
“Dear Gus,

We are pleased to announce that the dates for the Standard Chartered KL Marathon will revert to the original date of 4th October 2015 following the recent statement from the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
The decision was made after much discussion between the Ministry, Standard Chartered, Kuala Lumpur City Hall and race owner and organisers, Dirigo Events as well as feedback from the participants of the Marathon.”
For latest SCKLM 2015 updates, and the best running news & events, there is only one place… HAPPY RUNNER

KAMPAR MAJESTY RIDE 2015

KAMPAR MAJESTY RIDE 2015

For some, like myself, this will be our first ride in Kampar. I was told that there is a beautiful lake & many scenic paths to delight any cycling enthusiast. If you see me riding & clicking away with my camera, please say “hi” & smile for the camera – who knows maybe your photo will appear in a newspaper or magazine?!

For your riding pleasure, here are 6 Useful Cycling Tips:-
1. Please note that Participants are not required to wear the event T-Shirt. You may wear your own cycling attire.
 2. Your helmet (and sticker) will be your ‘passport’ for Water Stations, Medal Collection, Lucky Draw Prize Collection, and access to the Lunch Buffet.
 3. Only registered participants will receive identification stickers. Please stick them on both your helmet and bicycle.
4. There will be food items, flowers, fruits, and more!
 5. Hotel Carpark
For participants who will be arriving with their cars, please note that you can park your cars at the EAST WING (at the back of the hotel). Please refer to map below.

The West Wing Carpark (hotel front) will be reserved for Charity Bazaar stalls and the Start / Finish Lane.

6. Tips for Safety & Convenience:-
a) Please follow the instructions of the officials & marshals at all times.

b) Be aware of other cyclists around you at all times.

c) Give hand signals when stopping, turning & shout-out any dangerous road obstacles & potholes.

d) Avoid stopping suddenly. Veer to the left road shoulder if you need to stop.

e) Do not overtake from the left: This is not a race.

f) Although, there will be road marshals along the route, it is your responsibility to pratice SAFE CYCLING at all times.

 g) Go early to the starting area to avoid congestion & last minute dash.

h) This is a fun ride, so take your time to enjoy the sights & sounds of Kampar.

Always remember, it is not the bike, it’s the CYCLIST that matters!

The Hijacking Of…1,2,3 SCKLM 2015!

The Hijacking Of…1,2,3 SCKLM 2015!

Happier Days

 SCKLM 2015 SWALLOWED WHOLE
By now, the whole running world, except perhaps The North & South Pole communities, has heard of the incorporation of Malaysia’s prima doña running event, the Standard Chartered KL Marathon, into the Ministry of Sports’ National Sports Day event to be held on 10th October 2015 in KL. The latter event also happens to be the untouchable pet project of our ambitious Minister of Sports, KJ, as he is affectionately known. If you recall last year, KJ officiated the launching of SCKLM 2014: I was there, and I watched him become the 1st participant to register online for his first 10km run ever. At that time, I was thinking to myself how cool it was to have a Sports Minister who could actually run, and I was impressed with his seemingly sincere support for the running community. However, after reading yesterday’s press statement (see below for contents) emitting from his office regarding SCKLM 2015, all my fear of dirty politics entering the sacred sports arena, along with their hidden agendas, resurfaced automatically.

Julie wants 4th October reinstated

Politics in Malaysia Sports is nothing new, but within our running events circle, politicians presence have been limited to flagging-off the events & giving-away prizes to the runners. Now, KJ has singled-handedly crossed the boundary of decency to a place where his actions are perceived to be disrespectful to the 35,000 registered runners who paid 4 months in advance to run on 4th October 2015. In the past, paid runners have had to put-up with all kinds of reasons for a postponement or cancelation of running events such as ‘Act of God’, ‘Force Majeure’ & ‘Riots’, but never in our wildest dream could we have imagined that a whole Running event could be airlifted and inserted into a political rally disguised as a Sporting Event! The words, “gob-smacked” & “flabbergasted” do not come close to describing the feelings felt now by the faithful community of passionate runners. Yes, the faith of runners has been shaken to our very core. Can runners ever trust the words & promises of another race organiser ever again? If the ‘powers that be’ can command Malaysia’s most prestigious running event to roll-over & play dead, what chance has all the other smaller event organisers to stand-up against the whims & fancies of a politician? The short answer is “nil”, “nada” & “zip”!

THE WRONG PRECEDENCE By accepting, under pressure to do so or otherwise, the unlawful demands of a political force, I am afraid that Dirigo Events have let themselves down & the whole local running community too.

Will there be another twist to this fable?

HOW SO? It is certainly, NOT about the accommodation & flight booking cancelations, it is about something much more dear to our hearts. It is about breach of trust. Since the inception of SCKLM in 2009, the running community has backed this award-winning event right up to the hilt and to the high-point SCKLM enjoys today. Changing the event date for a good reason is one thing, but to give in to the bullying demands of politicians for the benefit of another totally unrelated event at the expense of SCKLM true supporters is INEXCUSABLE! This makes those people who work in, those who support, and those who help build the local running industry, a laughing stock. If it can be done once, it can be done again; this unprecedented turnaround is laying the foundation for future events to be treated equally bad again. Yes, our local running events are not perfect, but at least, the organisers are trying their best to meet the runners’ demands & we call our own shots, and not some big-wig in Putrajaya. In all decency, the Ministry’s proposal should have been shot-down even before it could reach the negotiation table. There is nothing in the SCKLM 2015 terms & conditions which allow such changes to be made, and certainly, not in the manner that it was made.

WHAT’S ALL THE FUSS ABOUT?

Who could have predicted this outcome?

Many people, especially runners, are fed-up with politicians unashamedly abusing their power for personal gains, speaking incoherent rubbish in public, and generally messing-up our economy & our lives. You see, running is one of the few remaining non-aligned bastions where we could escape from the meddling of clueless politicians & where we do not have to listen to their rhetoric repeated over & over again in the mainstream media. When runners get together, they normally talk about Running, and those runners who talk politics will soon be finding themselves alone. So, it crushes our world to find that politics & its powerful friends are now able to tell tax-paying runners when & how we can run! My Grandpa would have told those unwanted advisors, “go and fly kite!” Admittedly, I did signed-up earlier for the Fit Malaysia 10km Run scheduled for 10th October because it was free, or more accurately, it is paid by the Rakyat. Now, I have less than 3 months to decide whether or not, I should run in SCKLM 2015 at all, because under the current circumstances, the quality of SCKLM 2015 will be heavily diluted to make room for the added non-running activities & extra crowd, and furthermore, we have a venue with limited capacity. This seems like a recipe for chaos. Ironically, in 2011, the now-extinct Siemens 10km run was postponed to a later date of that year because the original date clashed with the Yellow Bersih Rally at the same place!
DO THE RIGHT THING It is not too late for KJ to see the error of his ways & to reverse his decision of high-handedly hijacking 35,000 SCKLM runners for the sake of meeting his target of 3 million participants at the inaugural National Sports Day. However, the likelihood of a Malaysian politician admitting to a mistake is like expecting the Klang River to freeze-over! Neither is it too late for the Title Sponsor & Organiser  of SCKLM to stand for the rights of their paying customers & stick to the original plan & date: In doing so, they can restore our faith in Running!
PARTING SHOTS Will common sense prevail or will SCKLM 2015 be remembered for all the wrong reasons? Only time will tell, my fellow runners.

PUTRAJAYA, 13 JULY- The inaugural National Sports Day which will fall on the 10th of October 2015 will see the Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2015 as the flagship event in its activity line-up.

The Marathon, which saw all 35,000 spots snapped up within 4 days, will lend a big boost to the targeted 3 million participants for the inaugural National Sports Day. This means that the iconic race will move from its announced date of Sunday, October 4 to Saturday, October 10, 2015.

National Sports Day will be celebrated simultaneously at district, state and national levels on the second Saturday of October each year following the inaugural event. The celebration has multiple objectives of inculcating a sporting culture, promoting unity, stimulating economic growth, growing sporting knowledge and recognising sporting talent.

“We thank Dirigo Events and Standard Chartered Bank for agreeing to move the Marathon date in support of the National Sports Day,” said Minister of Youth and Sports, Khairy Jamaluddin.

“It’s very significant to have the support of the 35,000 runners. Since 2009, the Standard Chartered KL Marathon has attracted participation from all over the country and abroad. We recognise that the date change will pose some challenges to runners and organizers,” he said.

He added that the ministry will work closely with the organisers to make the transition as smooth as possible for participants.

The race organiser, Dirigo Events, will be contacting all participants of the Standard Chartered KL Marathon (SCKLM) to provide some options soon. Runners are also advised to check the official website: http://www.kl- marathon.com for more information and follow them on Facebook and Twitter for updates.

Merapoh Forest Run 2015

  Merapoh Forest Run 2015

Foreword
Malaysia is blessed with some of the world’s oldest & largest tropical rainforest which is home to many indigenous flora and fauna. The awe-inspiring beauty & generosity of Mother Nature can never be matched in variety and depth, by anything man-made.

However, over the years, Mankind has consistently exploited our natural resources to the extent that if the illegal logging, unsustainable industrialisation, animal poaching are left unchecked, our children and the future generation may no longer be able to freely breathe fresh air or swim in clean mountain streams. Indeed, deforestation today has reached such alarming rates that it threatens to scar our natural green & vibrant landscape for good! Global-warming is no longer just a cry of warning by a bunch of eccentric scientists & green activists, it is happening right now, and the extreme global change in weather patterns is our last warning to save our planet from self-Inflicted overpopulation and overdevelopment.

How Can You Help?

As an individual, there are many important ways in which we can help to protect & save our precious natural resources from abuse & overuse. Here are 7 Easy Steps which we can all take to help address the problem of global warming:-

1) Save Water especially for your personal & household use.

2) Practice Recycle, Reuse & Reduce especially when using & disposing of materials made from plastics, paper & glass.

3) Drive cars & ride motorcycles less, and instead, take the public transport, carpool or ride a bicycle.

4) Save electricity & opt for energy-saving electronic devices & household appliances.

5) Do not buy foodstuffs, medicine, clothing & any consumer products which are produced from endangered species, nor should we buy any goods or services derived from the exploitation of child labour, sweat shops, the poor and the underprivileged.

6) Whenever possible, we should buy from & support companies who uphold sustainable practices throughout their whole business operations from sustainable sourcing of raw materials, to both sustainable production & delivery. Good examples of such environmentally-sensitive companies are:

 – Organic farmers

– Brands of “dolphin-free” canned tuna manufacturers

– Resort hotels who do not automatically give their guests a fresh towel everyday.

– Corporate Social Responsibility projects such as tree replanting & ‘gotong royong’ or community-based rubbish cleaning operations.

7) Support local, national or international Non-Profit Organisations who need the Public’s help to campaign peacefully to protect & preserve our precious natural environment. PEKA is one such Malaysian NGO who actively campaigns to Save Our Rainforest through their public awareness campaigns & through tree re-planting activities nationwide.

City Boy Meets Wild Forest
Trying to kill 2 birds with one big stone, metaphorically-speaking, I registered for this Merapoh Forest Run 2015 because firstly, I have been promised breathtaking sceneries unique to Taman Negara, by the race organisers. Secondly, and more poignantly, I wanted to give support to an organised running event which is playing an important role of highlighting the plight of our rapidly-dwindling virgin jungle. Oddly enough, I enjoy being a tourist in my own country, and her amazing places & friendly people will never cease to inspire me. Malaysian Tourism captured the spirit of traveling best with their catchphrase “To know Malaysia is to love Malaysia”. There are still many parts of Malaysia which I have yet to explore, and the prehistoric limestone caves in Merapoh is one of them. Why there and why now? Because big commercial conglomerates are already planning to build limestone quarries in Merapoh and their actions threaten to destroy what mother nature took millions of years to create. The same threat is happening in Chiku, Kelantan where there is a plan to build a cement plant which will not only affect the health & livelihood of the local farmers, but it will also destroy the last remnants of forest wildlife, as well as destroy the ecosystem within the 40-50 limestone caves in that area.

Surely, the authorities will not allow such atrocities to occur, right? Think again, my dear friends!

Remember not long ago, how important ancient artefacts were destroyed in Kedah by a private entity.

Remember, the land slide at Ringlet Town & the widespread soil erosion in Cameron Highlands which was caused by illegal farming carried-out by illegal workers!

Remember the destruction of protected coral reefs in Pulau Perhentian as a result of the building of State-run marine jetty which was ironically set-up to protect the very corals they were supposed to protect!

Remember the erection of a shopping mall at the historical Padang Melaka where historical ruins of an underground ancient wall were found & partially destroyed!

I am sure that you too can cite many other examples of negligence & abuse of power resulting in the irretrievable lost of many of Malaysia’s priceless treasures in our current society.

In short, we cannot leave the task of protecting our valuable natural resources and historical artefacts to the authorities alone without any form of monitoring by its Citizens.

Therefore, I hope more runners will put aside our personal demands for one moment and take part in this Run in order to save our forest, to save our environment, and essentially, to save ourselves.

The Nuts & Bolts
Here are 10 important things you ought to know about this Merapoh Forest Run 2015:-

Long Live KL Car Free Morning

Is KL Car Free Morning Under Threat?

I have been meaning to post an update on DBKL’s twice-monthly KLCFM event for a while now, but other writing assignments always seem to get in the way of it. Well, after reading in the news today about Tan Sri Ahmad Phesal Talib’s tenure, as DBKL Mayor, ending end of July, I felt compelled to write this article quick-smart because I am afraid that the new Mayor, upon taking office, may decide to scrap KLFCM project in favour of stamping his newly-crowned authority in KL by implementing his own-initiated high-rolling projects. Am I being overly paranoid or is there some truth in my fears?!

In too many previous cases, great social projects have been abandoned & replaced by ineffective ones to be initiated by the New Man in-charge for personal reasons, no matter how successful the existing project has become. I am afraid that the same tragic fate will befall upon our beloved KLCFM sessions if the New Gang in the office have their way completely. I hope that they prove me wrong & against the odds, not only give credit to the outgoing Mayor for his stupendous vision to initiate KLFM so successfully, but also, I hope the New Guys will have the courage to carry onward & upward the baton which will passed to them by the likeable Ahmad Phesal. The latter is popular because  he is approachable & he is a gentleman who leads by example. You can often see him on his modest bicycle at the starting line of KLCFM. Judging by the absence of fuss & formality surrounding him during KLCFM, I suspect that Ahmad Phesal really wants to do good by our beautiful capital city for the rakyat unlike so many other selfish high office-bearers who strut around like the people owe them a living & sometimes, their ridiculous words & actions give the public the impression that Kuala Lumpur is for sale to the right bidder.

Brian is on a mission

Since its inception in January 2014, KLCFM has grown in strength, and this gold star event has brought so much joy & happiness to the people of Klang Valley, as well as to visiting tourists. In fact, Ahmad Phesal has been bold enough to double KLCFM’s frequency to the 1st & 3rd Sunday of every month, and judging by the enthusiastic crowd, the Mayor’s move is paying dividends in the form of increasing public support for a greener KL & better understanding from the affected motorists & shopkeepers.

Runner Bard gives his thumbs up

Everybody is Welcomed!

Personally, I really enjoy KLCFM because I can choose to cycle or run in the heart of KL hassle-free & smog-free with my friends. Indeed, KLCFM is not only an important GREEN & HEALTHY activity, but it also helps promote social unity by creating a favourable platform for families, friends, neighbours, tourists, strollers, skateboarders, runners, rollerbladers & cyclists  to BOND WITH EACH OTHER.

Join me at KLCFM on 19th July 2015 for a fun morning of whatever activity you may fancy.
