Semenyih Eco Trail Run 2015 Debut

THE LAST HURRAH

For many runners, last weekend meant officially signing-off their 2015 running calendar with one last hurrah event. Boy, were there so many exciting events happening on that penultimate Sunday. There were Melaka International River Marathon, Newton Challenge, MyBuddies Run, and not to mention, Taiwan Marathon & Chiang Mai Marathon too! As for me. I was invited to the inaugural Semenyih Eco Trail Run 2015 (SETR 2015) at the Hot Springs of Sungai Lalang which is only an hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur. The idea of trail running through natural greenery and getting away from the everyday concrete jungle of the city sounded very appealing to me.

image-8RUSTIC COUNTRY ROAD

Without the help of GPS, I headed to Cheras and Kajang, before reaching Semenyih Town where I turned-off unto the quiet back road of Jalan Sg Lalang. About 5km from the main intersection, I reached the race venue which was essentially a Hot Spring recreational area which was converted to our event venue for that mild morning. I would not be far wrong to say that there were about 300 runners for the 16km category, and around 500 runners for the 7km route. There was a pre-race warm-up & stretching session for the runners to limber-up which is also a good way to shake-off any muscle-stiffness and rev-up the body’s engine.

12374949_10205119589143510_6484265997626224907_o100% OFF-ROAD

At 7:30 sharp, the first group of 300 eager runners were flagged-off under a cooling mist of fresh morning dew. Although, I had no clue what stood between me & the finish line, I was, nevertheless thrilled at the prospect of running in such natural surroundings and filling-up my lungs with fresh air for a change. 12377607_1925325644359928_3806211880946116360_oThe terrain underfoot  was a variation of grass, dirt, and gravel. We ran through shaded palm and rubber estates, as well as along fruit orchards and small rivers. These well-kept trails were were normally used by the estate and farm workers. 10258254_1021213124565873_8821575172685058642_nAt times, we ran along the wider dirt tracks which were used by trucks to ferry workers, equipment & harvested fruits. The route was hilly which tested the fitness levels of the runners going uphill. The downhill portion favoured runners with strong leg muscles who could withstand the additional strains on the knee joints as they bombed down the hills. The final hurdle was a river crossing situated 100 metres from the finish line. Although, the water was only ankle deep, the slippery and muddy embankment added a final challenge for the weary runners.

12373149_10153850235652079_5915977005479059913_nAT THE FINISH

According to the official Seiko timing system, the average finishing time for the 16km was around 2 hours, and by that time most of the 7km runners were already back to the finishing area too. Upon crossing under the finish arch, every runner was given a medal, and we waited in line for our delicious egg sandwiches, donut, banana, watermelon and cold drinks. Some runners were wading in the hot springs as they rested and waited for the lucky draw ceremony. Afterwards, trophies and prizes were given away to the top 5 runners from the Men & Women Open & Veteran categories for both the 16km & 7km distances.

A SPLENDID DEBUT

In summary, the race organiser Innotex Sports Management did a great job looking after the welfare of all the runners from start to finish with adequate course marshalling, sufficient water and isotonic drink stations available, and the chosen trails, be it 2km under-distance for the 16km route, were well mapped-out and it gave the runners an exciting  all-terrain trail running challenge with the bonus of a beautiful countryside backdrop no far from the city centre.

8  TOP TIPS FOR TRAIL RUNNING

  1. Wear proper trail running shoes which are lightweight, sturdy, waterproof, and have the right traction for off-road trails.
  2. Always wear a hydration pack to keep water, energy bars, handphone and some cash in case of emergencies.
  3. Never run in a trail alone. Run with someone who is familiar with the trail.
  4. Novice trail runners should stick to easy trails such as the one in Bukit Gasing in Petaling Jaya or in Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) in Kepong in order to familiarise themselves with trail running.
  5. On the uphill, stop or walk slowly if you find your heart beating too fast or if you are out of breath.
  6. On the downhill, be careful not to take too big strides as it will difficult to balance and control your speed.
  7. Remember to pace yourself, and reserve enough energy to last you the whole distance.
  8. Inside the trails, never litter and do not damage the natural flora and fauna.

Stepping Up In 2016

It is always great news for the running community when a top running brand such as Compressport is willing to meaningfully sponsor running events in Malaysia. Indeed, Year 2016 will be a groundbreaking year for Compressport because we will see not one, two or three, but FOUR new COMPRESSPORT running events in Malaysia with Compressport Asia Pacific (CAP) of Singapore as the Title Sponsor in partnership with the My Triathlon Shop (MTS) as the Race Organiser.  A leap of zero to four events in one year is a huge one, and it goes to show that Compressport really means business. As Mr. Kishen of CAP declared, “Since running fees are getting expensive, Compressport want to add value to running events in Malaysia by sponsoring high-quality Compressport products as we have successfully done so in Singapore over many years.”

Compressport Combo Challenge 2016 Launch

Event: Compressport Road

Compressport 100 Ultra Trail Marathon Series Official Launch

12339540_1005580346129812_1395273589159561186_oNEXT, PLEASE: On 12th December 2015, Compressport officially launched their next two new Ultra Trail Marathons (50km & 25km, Solo & Team) to be held in Penang Island on 20th Aug 2016 and in Semenyih, Selangor on 5th Nov 2016 respectively.

12375065_1005581122796401_3523923472644282995_oCIRCLE OF FRIENDS: The official launch event in Petaling Jaya was witnessed by more than 50 Newbie & Seasoned Ultra Marathoners at Xero Gravity Climbing Gym. The guests were all given an attractive Compressport blue “media” dri-fit running Tee and a Compressport visor as part of their goodie bag.

12339535_1005579586129888_6586998928603791986_oBEAUTIFUL BEAST: Our first speaker was Ironman & Director of My Triathlon Shop, Ms Karen Geh, who highlighted the “no-loop” breath-taking scenery of the Penang Series trail, as well as its monster total elevation GAIN of 2,800m.

12339584_1005576876130159_7489289870092706926_oGIVEAWAYS & ADDED VALUE: Our second speaker was Mr. Kishen of Compressport Asia Pacific who revealed Compressport commitment to provide Malaysian runners with high-quality and value-for-money running apparel and events. For our gathering, Compressport & MTS sponsored 3 Lucky Draw prizes of free running slots to Compressport 100 UTM 2016 for 3 lucky guests.

ULTRA MENTORING: Ultra Running is a gruelling test of physical endurance and mental strength. The intense pain of completing an ultra marathon is only matched by the euphoria of personal achievement upon reaching the finish line. It takes courage to run an ultra.

With the right mentoring and support from the experienced ultra runners, the big step-up to ultra running becomes less daunting and more achievable for ultra newcomers. Hence, this launching of Compressport UTM Series provided an ideal opportunity for ultra beginners to be inspired and to learn from the seasoned ultra runners in the audience.

12238254_1005578129463367_7093786683226439484_oULTRA PIONEER: Although Mr. Ng Seow Kong, the President of Malaysian Ultra Runners Association (MURA) could not attend the launching because of his involvement in staging UM24 on the same day, his message of support for the ultra running community was read-out ably to the audience by veteran endurance runner, Ms Amelia Ang. I recommend that all local ultra runners read his full text given below for a great summary on Ultra Running in Malaysia today.

12375056_1005578742796639_8990202864135401565_oLIVING LEGEND: An Appreciation Award was presented to the guest-of-honour, Mr. Oliver Ker, for his admirable dedication to running and for inspiring so many of his fellow runners to run with heart, to never give up and to walk to the finish line if you can no longer run. As a senior veteran of long-distance running, Oliver’s incredible passion for running until today at the age of 74-year old provides constant inspiration to the whole running community regardless of age, gender and status. Being a humble guy, Oliver is the first to say that there are other runners who deserve this award more than him. Nevertheless, we can all agree that the enormous contribution to running made by Oliver deserves more than a simple award.

ULTRA ACHIEVERS: On behalf of Compressport & My Triathlon Shop, I sincerely thank all of our guests and photographer, Mr. WK Chan, for their valuable time and support, and for being part of the launching of the inaugural Compressport 100 Ultra Trail Marathon 2016. We hope to see you at the Penang and/or the Semenyih Series for the ultimate ultra running experience.

QUOTE

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. The new and the more seasoned ultra runners. I am Ng Seow Kong, the President of Malaysian Ultra Runners Association.

I wish to thank Compressport and My Triathlon Shop for inviting me to attend the launch of Compressport 100 Ultra Trail Marathon 2016. Unfortunately I am now physically in Stadium Jugra, Banting, directing a 24hours running race called UM24. It’s a race format none of you have probably tried before: running around a 400m stadium for 6hrs, 12hrs and 24 hours. Some days you might want to consider doing that.

So I apologize for not being as lucky as all of you who can be here attending the launch of a new ultra running event sponsored by Compressport, and organized by My Triathlon Shop. Such an initiative indicates yet again the rise of interest among Malaysian runners in running ultra marathons. In direct response to such a demand, many ultra races have mushroomed in the last 1-2 years all over different parts of Malaysia. Ultra running calendars are rather full.

Also in response to the growing ultra running community, is the formation of Malaysian Ultra Runners Association. It’s an association whose members are ultra runners themselves. MURA’s objective is to promote ultra running standards through organizing forums, clinics, LSDs, posting of ultra running articles, and supporting local ultra races. So, we will promote and support the Compressport 100 Ultra Marathon in 2016 as well.

We support the wise consideration by the organizer to limit the distance to 50km. This is a good race to make it as your virgin ultra. With its tough elevation gain, it can be challenging as well to the more seasoned runners. Such a combination will appeal to a broad range of the growing ultra running community.

Malaysian running communities are predominantly comprised of road runners, many of whom have some fear of running on trails due to its uneven terrain, thus the possibility of tripping and falling. While this is perfectly understandable, trail running offers the kind of beauty offered by the nature surrounding the race route that you can’t possibly get from road races. The varieties of terrain activate many different parts of the leg muscles and other parts of the body, thus allowing the runners to suffer less from running injuries, or to recover faster from training and races.

It is therefore heartening to see more trail races (ultra or not) being organized in Malaysia. Compressport Ultra Marathon 2016 has obviously taken the correct step in moving the ultra running movement forward.

In promoting and supporting ultra trail races in Malaysia, MURA has planned for more LSD trail runs in 2016. It will continue to organize forums on ultra trail running, inviting established ultra runners to share their tips, and post articles which are educational to the runners. We are planning a boot camp sometime in Feb 2016 where the runners will spend 2 days 1 night over a weekend to learn from invited speakers on trail running and nutrition and etc. We hope this will be useful to those of you who are new to ultra trail running.

MURA would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. We wish Compressport all the success in this event, and will support and promote it actively in 2016. Thank you for having MURA with all of you today.

Ng Seow Kong, President of MURA

MPI GENERALI RUN 2016 – COUNTDOWN

Snr Mgmt with models.JPG

Cheer-Up 2014 !!

MILO VAN IS BACK!

My first & only MPIB Run was in 2012 when it was first launched & I remember running my first barefoot run of 16km. It was an exhilarating moment and it was a marvellous way to kick-off the running year with so many running buddies over a cup of milo.
The last two years, MPIB 2014 & 2015 has sealed its popularity with record-high 5,000 participants. Although MPI Generali 2016 will have 4,700 runners, I expect another stupendous event with many runners staying behind for a traditional NEW YEAR 2016 chit-chat while enjoying the snacks & drinks provided by the generous sponsors.

PRE-LOVED SPORTS SHOES & TEES WANTED

The concept of My First Run Clinic came about helping individuals who are not runners to take up the sustainable recreational activity.

My First Run Clinic aims to improve the participants’ health, cardiovascular fitness and BMI measurements as well as contribute to their weight loss within a two-month programme.

This Saturday morning 12th December 2015 is the last running clinic, and they will be using a base 3km route starting from the large playground located just a short walk from the Petronas station along Jalan Sri Hartamas 1 (GPS 3.155964, 101.647603) loosely based on a Beginner’s Running Program by the New York Road Runners (www.nyrr.org).

Venue: Large playground located a short walk from the Petronas station along Jalan Desa Sri Hartamas 1, KL (GPS 3.155964, 101.647603)

Time: 7:30am – My First Run Clinic starts (every Saturday from 31 Oct to 12 Dec 2015)

8:30am – Talk by Guest Speaker (on selected Saturdays)

Besides a Fellowship Run, they will also have a pot luck breakfast for all participants and our first collection for Project Good Deeds. So, even if you are not going to participate in the run, you can still bring along your pre-loved sports shoes & T-shirts to donate to several Orang Asli homes. After all, we runners have way too many running Tees, and it will be for such a worthy cause which will be good for your soul.

PRESS RELEASE
MPI Generali celebrates countdown with sponsors and partners
Kuala Lumpur – MPI Generali Insurans Berhad held a 30 Days Countdown Cocktail for its annual community run at Pacific Regency Hotel yesterday. Run sponsors and partners as well as members of the media packed Cristallo Restaurant to build momentum for MPI Generali Run 2016, the fifth run organised by the general insurer.
The attendees were treated to a retrospective catwalk that featured all five runner T- shirts that had been printed for the Run, each corresponding to one of the five colour blocks in the Run logo. Sponsors and partners were formally recognised for their support of the Run in an appreciation plaque presentation ceremony. Some of these sponsors have been with the Run since its debut in 2012.
The new MPI Generali CEO Mr Oliver Tan shared his enthusiasm about the upcoming Run in his welcome address: “We have attracted many supporters with or without running background, colleagues, corporations, and sponsors and partners like yourselves. Through these five years, we have established a base of loyal followers, and we want to show our appreciation of their loyalty with MPI Generali Run 2016.
“It is going to be bigger, bolder and brighter. This is the Run where the fun comes in family sizes. We want our followers to make it their family day. We want you to make it your family day.”
Snr Mgmt with sponsorsThe list of sponsors and partners for MPI Generali Run 2016 includes New Balance (Official Apparel), Revive Isotonic (Official Isotonic), Pacific Regency (Hotel Partner), Running Malaysia (Media Partner – Magazine), Gleneagles Kuala Lumpur (Medical Partner), Affin Hwang Capital, BP Healthcare Group, Mamee, Sworke, Magnum, Nestlé Fitnesse, Nestlé Milo, Pilatique, Garmin, KT Tape, Leong Adjustment Sdn. The token of appreciation for donors of the third Project Good Deeds was also unveiled at the cocktail: the Pandanus bookmark. Made from pandanus leaves, the bookmark bears the weave patterns based on the indigenous Mah Meri latch weaving of a traditional pouch.
The amount of work that goes into the making of one bookmark gives the token a special touch. Donors will receive the bookmark in acknowledgment of their donation of sports shoes and T-shirts to Project Good Deeds, which is set to benefit another four Orang Asli kampungs this time.
What does the Organiser have in store for the community in MPI Generali Run 2017? The Organising Committee assured supporters and followers of the Run that they would be the first to know once plans could be finalised. Ice-Watch Light Up The Night Run 2015 – Press Conference

PB250352.JPGIce-Watch Light Up The Night Run 2015 – Press Conference

Shah Alam Gems

Prior to registering for this inaugural 10km Ice-Watch Run, I had never heard of this watch brand from Belgium nor had I been inside Plaza Shah Alam. Admittedly, I am out-of-touch with reality when a subject matter is not part of my cycling and running world. So, I headed to this press conference determined to find-out more about the Event Title Sponsor, Ice Watch, and at the same, check-out Plaza Shah Alam for the first time.

Eat, Shop & Run

PB250356.JPG

The proceedings started with a short speech by Dato Sri Meer Habib, Managing Director of Time Zone Sdn Bhd who is the sole exclusive distributor of Ice Watch since April 2014. The Habib family name is synonymous with jewelry, but on that day, Meer Habib was dressed in an all-black sporty casual number in line with the topic of the inaugural Light Up The Night Run 2015 to be held on 5th December 2015. Meer Habib’s friendly smile and easy-manner when he addressed the press conference audience made us all feel at home.

Currently, we have 12 Ice-Watch outlets in Peninsular Malaysia, and next month, we will be opening our first outlet in East Malaysia at Viva Mall, Kuching,” he proudly declared. Meer added later, “On race night, Plaza Shah Alam opening hours will be extended to 12 midnight. So the ladies can shop, while the men can eat at one of the many splendid eateries here, after the run.”

During the Question & Answer session, we clarified the following:-

  1. This was the first time that the local authorities have allowed such a run to take place in that area.

  2. One in every six participants will be given a free Ice Watch.

  3. 2,000 runners registered for the 5km run, and 1,500 runners will take part in the 10km run.

  4. Top 5 Male & Female Runners for 10km will be given a trophy and Ice Watch worth RM699.

  5. There will be ample parking spaces available in and around the race venue.

  6. No, the sponsor will not be giving away Habib jewelry as part of prizes!

Safari, Crystals & Glitter

Next, we witnessed a ribbon-cutting which marked the official opening of Ice Watch latest gallery at the Ground Level of Plaza Shah Alam. The beautiful models and celebrities showed-off the chic and elegant watches as the media photographers fired their flashes. I was surprised by the wide range of different watch models available to suit any occasion. Furthermore, the numerous designs and colours meant that you could match the watches according to your specific lifestyle and personality. The designs range from classic to contemporary, and made to suit the socialite, as well as the sporting crowd. Every Ice Watch is backed with a 2-year warranty. When you wear an Ice-Watch, you won’t want to take it off in a hurry because it compliments you perfectly and the strap is very comfortable.

Know Your Organiser

The founder of The Marathon Company (TMC) is Benz Malik who have been given the task to ensure that the inaugural Light Up The Night Run will be enjoyable, entertaining and safe for all participants. After the successful Run Stroller Run event which took place last week, this will be only the second concept run for The Marathon Company (TMC). Having witnessed the excellent co-operation between the sponsor and TMC, I have no doubt that this night run will live-up to its exciting billing, and it will brighten-up the Shah Alam streets with the help of 3,500 glow-stick-waving runners.

Spartans, Are You Ready?!

SPARTANS, ARE YOU READY?! SPARTAN RACE ARRIVES IN MALAYSIA!

The World’s Best Obstacle Race
The Reebok Spartan Race is the world’s leading obstacle racing series with over 130 events in 18 countries during 2014 alone. Typically, the races feature 3 distances;
– 5km course with 15 obstacles called the ‘Sprint’
– 13km course with 20 obstacles called the ‘Super’
– 20km course with 25 obstacles called the ‘Beast’. Participants can choose to enter for the competitive Elite heats or the Open heats for all fitness levels.
The first Spartan Malaysia race would offer only the Sprint distance. “How tough can it be?” I thought as I signed-up for the inaugural Spartan Race Kuala Lumpur together with my wife, Maryati.
IMG_0663
Whatever the outcome, we have the Sports & Youth Minister, YB Khairy Jamaluddin, to thank for bringing into Malaysia, for the first time, this world-famous obstacle challenge as part of the first National Sports Day on 10th October 2015.
Tired, Wet & Thirsty
The first few obstacles were easy as we comfortably jumped over, ducked under, and climbed through a few low obstacles. After lulling us into a
sense of false security in the beginning, later on, we were hit with a never-ending barrage of muscle-straining obstacles which took the wind out of even the fittest competitors. We had to carry heavy bags of sand up and down hills. We had to scale 6 & 8 foot walls. We had to flip unbelievably heavy lorry tires.

We had to scale two-stories high towers. We had to crawl under barb-wires. We had to slide into a mud pit and clamber back up the slippery slope on the other side. We had to hoist heavy backs of sand on a rope two-stories up.

Halfway through, I had lost my wife in the malaise of tiredness, and I was sure that my wife would have quit out of fatigue or due to some injury. Although the sky was sun-less, the afternoon heat was punishing and it slowed the racers down significantly. At this point, the thought of quitting seemed like a favourable option. To add to our hardship, there were only 2 water stations on the course and we could not hydrate ourselves adequately. Moreover, besides making only water available at the water stations, the organisers should have provided sports drinks or electrolyte drinks too in order to help the tiring contestants replace the heavy lost of salt in our bodies. Other obstacles included spear-throwing, scaling-up hill slopes using ropes, carrying buckets full of rocks, and traversing a wall which required a good sense of balance and powerful hand-grip. The two most challenging obstacles were the one-story rope climb and the monkey bars. Many contestants, including myself, had failed or skipped these two extreme obstacles, and as our penalty, we had to complete 30 burpees which was as tiring as the obstacles themselves.

Leave No One Behind
It is in our human DNA to help someone in need, and it was really uplifting to witness strangers giving a helping hand to a struggling contestant. Perhaps, this act of compassion was one of the important lessons of being a true Spartan.

About 2 km to the finish line, we had to hike up a jungle trail. The natural canopy sheltered us from the heat and kept us cooler in the shade. Almost reaching the trail summit, I saw a guy sitting on the ground, and he was grimacing in pain. He told me that he was suffering severe muscle cramps. I told him not to worry, and advised him to take deep breaths to lower his heart rate & to conserve his energy. After he had few minute rest, I put one of his arm over my shoulder to ease pressure on one of his leg, and he used a piece of wood as support for his other leg. Then, we walked slowly together to the bottom of the hill. By this time, he had recovered well enough to complete the last 3 obstacles & cross the finish line, and graduate to be a Spartan. Could this be the Spartan’s way to remind me that it is not important whether you win or lose but how you play the game? Afterall, the whole purpose of the National Sports Day is to build a fitter and healthier nation, and we cannot do it alone.

Quitting Is For Losers
After collecting my Finisher Medal and T-shirt, I was looking around for my wife. Then, it dawned on me, “what if she had not quit and she is still making her way through the course?”. Swiftly, I made my way back to the finish line. IMG_0694There, I could see this female covered in mud, jumping energetically over the last fire hurdle and gleefully skipping to the finish line with arms raised and her joyful face full of relief and satisfaction. “Could it be?” – I asked myself. IMG_0723As I walked closer to her, I rubbed my eyes to get a clearer view, and to my surprise, it was Maryati, almost unrecognisable from her muddy appearance. Admittedly, I felt guilty for doubting my wife’s ability to finish the course, and promised myself to not make that same mistake again. Only at that moment, I could completely relax, and bask in the glory of reaching our newfound status of Spartan. The next big task was to get ourselves cleaned-up. Fortunately, there was a big fire truck with firemen hosing down the muddy Spartans. It was refreshingly fun being hosed down by the high-pressure hose. In no time, the mud was removed from our clothing. Then, it was time to gather our belongings and take the shuttle bus back to Setia City Mall where we had parked our car.IMG_0707
IMG_0713
A Microcosm of Life
When I reflect back on my first Spartan Race, I now understand why they have such a huge following around the globe. It is not only because the race pushes people beyond their comfort zones and tests our physical & mental limits. On a deeper level, their obstacles represent the challenges that we face in life. How well we progress in the race, as in our lives, will depend on how well we deal and overcome these challenges. However, unlike the inequality of life, in the Spartan arena, everyone is treated the same, and what we get out of it will depend directly on our willingness to work hard for it.
IMG_0748
Feeling Fully Re-Charged
Having completed the Spartan Race, I feel a renewed sense of greater self-esteem and a better appreciation of my strengths & weaknesses. Based on my eye-opening Spartan Race experience, I feel that I could and should push myself more to be a better person to my family, friends and to my community.
In The News
IMG_0908
The Star published my article on my virgin Spartan Race entitled, “Spartan suffering” on 17th October 2015 which included a comic sketch specially commissioned by Running Toons.
