Editor’s Note

Undeniably, the prospects of running 7km on a private elevated bus track for the first time was just too good an opportunity to pass.

Moreover, I was keen to take part in my first running event organised by a new event outfit called CentriSoh Sales & Marketing which was established in 2016 by a band of seasoned runners.

So, after energising myself with a delicious cup of TrueStart Performance Coffee, I made my way to the Sunway race venue for my 2am flag-off.

↗ 4⃣ Levels Up

Our race venue was a huge bus depot on top of a multi-storey car park which was walking distance from the BRT U Monash Station.

There were plenty of parking lots available at the surrounding shop lots for parking convenience.

Lam (Left) & Law (Right)

⏳ Last Minute Rush

I arrived at the enormous BRT Depot just before midnight and I was faced with a large crowd waiting to collect their race kits. I was guessing this delay in the distribution of race kits was why the first 12am wave was initially postponed by 15 minutes. For this reason, it’s always advisable to let runners collect their race kits before race day.

Since, I had two hours before my 2am flag-off, I occupied my time chatting with some running buddies, visiting the various vendor booths and talking with several of the uniformed Prasarana officers.

After the first wave runners had left the depot, I collected my kit without any waiting time.

One runner was upset that there was no baggage drop area, and he couldn’t leave his belongings in the car like the others because he came by motorbike. I advised him to leave his belongings with one of the vendor’s booth or with the race officials.

🌊First Wave Drama

Soon after the Emcee had announced that Wave 1 Midnight Flag-Off was delayed by 15 minutes, the enormous Start/Finish Balloon Arch decided to play funny buggers and collapsed to the chagrin of the anxious runners. The Technical Crew immediately sprung into action to fix the problem, and by 12:30am, Encik Azmi Abdul Aziz, Group Managing Director of Prasarana officially flagged-off the first batch of eager runners.

Smooth As Silk

My second wave was flagged-off according to plan. Immediately, I was awestruck by how clean, smooth and well-lit the track was. In fact, I couldn’t remember running on a smoother surface than this one. Wearing shoes seemed pointless on such a perfect surface.

Then, it made me wonder how great it would be if the street below could be as well maintained as this track. Perhaps, I was being delusional due to the lack of sleep 😂

The Perfect Run

It was exciting to be running on a pristine track, and being above the streets and away from the pesky traffic below.

I was surprised at how much different the atmosphere felt a few stories high – it was much quieter and cooler than being on the street level. The higher atmosphere seemed to be made for running. If a Prasarana senior staff is reading this blog, I would like them to consider opening the track to community runners once-a-month as part of a CSR project because it feels such a waste not to make more use of such a superb facility.

The other advantages to running on the BRT Track is that it is completely safe, and you cannot get lost even if you tried!

During the actual run, I remember there were 3 water stations to quench our thirst, and there were enough helpful marshals around to keep an eye on all the runners.

Mr. Lum

Also, I like that there was a 2 hour gap between the 3 wave starts because it allows for non-runners to experience a 7km walk and still finish the course in time.

Watermelon Treat

The juicy and sweet watermelon slices tasted very good after our sweaty workout, and I have to give the organisers special credit for providing ample snacks of fruits, buns, nasi lemak, Isotonic drinks and water for all the Finishers.

A special shout-out to the Lucky Draw Sponsors, as well as to the @hitzfm Crew for the nice giveaways.

It’s A Keeper

As a runner, I would love to see this RapidKL BRT Run become an annual running event because it has many treats and unique qualities to offer the community and recreational runners which cannot be matched by any other existing events of the same magnitude.

😍 Thanks To RapidKL For Giving Us The Privilege Of Being The First To Run On The Elevated Bus Track.

👏 Congratulations To @centrisohmy on organising a one-of-a-kind running event.

🌜🏃🌞 The Debut Of UiTM Ultra Marathon 2016

🌜🏃🌞 The Debut Of UiTM Ultra Marathon 2016

FACT FILE

Debut Running Event: UiTM Ultra Marathon

Distance: 52km

Race Format: 5.2km x 10 loops in 12 hours

Venue: UiTM Stadium, Shah Alam

Date: 10th December 2016

Flag-Off: 10:00pm

Cut-Off: 10am, Sunday 11 Dec 2016

Number of Participants: 350 Runners

Organiser: UiTM Running Club

Editor’s Note

How crazy can running 12 hours be if there are 350 people willing to do it?! The runner’s logic for joining such an ultramarathon is – “I love running, and so, the longer and further that I can run, the happier I will be”! Obviously, this is fallacy when it comes to a grueling ultramarathon.

It’s been 7 long months since my last Ultra event, so I wanted to rekindle my smouldering Ultra flame before it extinguishes altogether.

Besides, the allure of experiencing a new ultra event, offering new and different challenges, proved too irresistible, and the rest is history.

As First Published In Running Malaysia

After completing the event, I was elated to be able to share my latest Ultramarathon experience in Running Malaysia magazine, Mar/Apr 2017 (Issue 2⃣0⃣).

Atleast, I am guaranteed to have one interested reader, my wife!

In case, you could not find a copy, I have also included the original and unedited article herein below for prosperity. Hope, you enjoy reading it as much as my feet suffered for it 😥

What Does It Take To Run An Ultramarathon?

The simple answer is that you will need to be UNBREAKABLE!

For the record, my Ultra quests have been limited to successfully completing only three 50km and one 84km Ultra Marathons which certainly doesn’t make me an expert on the subject.

My only failure happened last year in May at the Eco 100 Ultra Trail Marathon (UTM), staged at Bukit Mertajam, when I pulled-out of the race at the second checkpoint, after completing only 30k of the required 100k total. I learnt much more about myself and ultra running in that one moment than in all my successful past ultra races put together. In fact, the saying that “Success Does Not Teach You Anything”, was true in my case.

Bouncing Back From Defeat

Initially, my first major running DNF (Did Not Finish) was hard to accept and it was frustrating to have a blemish on my otherwise perfect race records. However, I was determined NOT to waste my time wallowing in self-pity, and after some soul-searching, I did salvage 3 valuable lessons from that sombre episode which have greatly helped me become a better runner.

My 3 Pillars Of Ultra Running

After going through some trial and error, I can share 3 of my most important tips for Ultra Marathons as follows :-

Failure Is An Option: Previously, I was consumed with, and driven by Fear whenever I took part in any Ultra Marathon. I would be afraid of not being able to reach the checkpoints on time. I would be afraid of not being able to cross the Finish Line. I would be afraid of getting lost in the darkness. I would be afraid about picking up an injury or running out of energy prematurely. Then,it dawned on me that this approach to Ultra Running was unrealistic and unworkable. So, I replaced my “Fear To Fail” outlook with a more upbeat “Dare To Fail” approach. The idea behind my new mindset was to allow myself the freedom to take on Ultra Marathons as as a way to test my physical endurance limits, but if I happen to DNF, then I will take it as a learning experience to help me grow and become a smarter runner. On paper, this sounded like a Win-Win scenario, but I will still need to test if it works in a real ultra racing conditions

Mind Over Matter: It takes an unusual or even a crazy breed of runners to attempt an ultra marathon which is typically any distance from 50km to 200km! Contrary to popular belief, ultra marathon is not so much about who can run the furthest, but it’s all about who wants it bad enough. You may be the slowest runner in the field, but if you have the Mental Fortitude to battle through the inevitable intense pain and weariness of Ultra Marathons, then you ought to finish the race in good stead or in one piece, at least. So, before someone decides to venture into an ultra marathon, they must first overcome the gigantic mental barrier which stops us from even attempting to run such a ridiculously long distance.

I Run To Eat

Discover What Motivates You: It goes without saying that you need to train hard to reach your weekly running mileage goals. Equally important, every ultramarathoner must be clear on their reasons and motivation before the race, because when the going gets tough and doubt starts creeping into your mind, you need to remind yourself why you are torturing yourself. Your reasons to complete the race must be compelling enough to stop yourself from quitting when your mind and body is pushed to its very limits.

Rediscovering Distance Running

When Race Director of UiTM Running Club, Aizuddin Imran, invited me to his inaugural UiTM Ultra Marathon which consisted of running 10 times around a 5.2k hilly route within the UiTM Campus with a 12 hours cut-off time, I was ready to take-up this new challenge.

The advantage of running in loops is that there is one bag-drop area at the Start/Finish Line where the runners can change clothes, eat and rest all in one place at your convenience.

The disadvantage is that some runners will find it too boring having to run in circles and passing the same scene over and over again.

A Fresh Outlook

As I stood there at the Start Line, a few minutes before the 10pm flag-off, it was the first time that I was not shivering with fright at the thought of running an ultra. In fact, I was pumping myself up with positive thoughts such as, “It’s not the Winning or Losing that matters, but it’s the Taking Part that counts!”.

It was going to be a long night, so I ran at a slow pace, so as not to expend too much energy too quickly.

Barefoot Beginning

For some reason, for the first 4 loops, I ran barefoot. Perhaps, I wanted to feel awaken by my soles touching the tarmac road.

After each loop, I would stop for the drinks and light snacks of peanut butter sandwiches & fresh fruits to keep my energy levels up.

After 20.8km, my feet were getting too tender, so I put on my shoes and continued running into the night.

Undulating Course

The majority of the roads were well lit and in good condition. The steep hills slowed some runners like me to a walking pace, and I would run faster downhill to catch-up for lost time. Frankly, I like the hills because it breaks the monotony of running at the same pace on a flat course.

Sleep Walking

Whenever I run past midnight, I will get very sleepy after 2am, and at the peak of sleepiness around 3am, I was fighting hard to keep my eyes opened. Fortunately, the True Start performance coffee stall at the transition area had freeflow coffee for the sleepy runners. After 5am, my sleepiness disappeared and I was able to focus on urging myself to keep running.

You’re Never Alone

Fortunately, there was always other runners nearby to keep each other company; we fed-off each other’s energy, and it really helped knowing that we were not alone in our sufferings.

At my last 5.2k lap, I was on course for a finishing time of 10 hours which was well within the cut-off time.

Rizal (Far Right)

Meeting up with Ultra Marathon Newbie Rizal along the way, I decided to walk together with him so that I could give him some positive words of encouragement as he still had 2 laps to go. It was at that moment that I really appreciated my new running philosophy of Dare To Fail because it allowed me to forget about the destination of the Finish Line, and instead, I felt relaxed enough to enjoy every step of my epic running journey, be it a 50k long distance or a 5k fun run….

🍜🍔🚚 TTDI Food Truckers by Gus Ghani

🍜🍔🚚 TTDI Food Truckers by Gus Ghani

Episode | TTDI Food Trucker’s 1st Anniversary

Date | 18 March 2017

Location | Taman Tun Dr Ismail (Near RHB)

Operating Hours | 6pm~11pm, Mon~Sat

Editor’s Note

Not long ago, my wife Maryati and I sampled our first real food truck dining experience at Tapak Urban Street Dining at Jalan Ampang. What We Liked About It? I liked the concept of eating good food with minimum fuss, and Maryati liked the variety of different food types available.

So, Maryati recommended for us to have supper at another similar outdoor eatery called TTDI Food Truckers on a Saturday night…🌙

The Layout

Situated in an open air carpark, TTDI Food Truckers consist up to 15 different food truck vendors surrounding tables and chairs where the patrons could dine under the stars.

There were many parking spaces available along the streets.

First Timer

Since it was my first time, I had a good look around at all the food truck menus before deciding what to order.

Seafood Aglio Olio

In contrast, since Maryati had been there once before, she had already ordered a plate of SEAFOOD AGLIO OLIO from the popular Street Gourmet KL truck whose kitchen was in full swing keeping up with the many orders.

Their other signature dishes are SAYONARA CARBONARA and SICKO CHICKEN PESTO.

Judging by the crowd and the 15 minutes waiting time, Street Gourmet KL has already built-up quite a following after having operated in the same spot since its inception one year ago.

Around The World

Apart from Italian dishes such as spaghetti and pizza, the other interesting food trucks included The Gringos which, as the name suggests, offered some mouth-watering Tex Mex dishes such as Rice Burritos and Nachos.

Laksa Johor

Laksa Oh Laksa

After much deliberation, I finally settled for a hot dish of Laksa Johor which was not only delicious but, with a price tag of RM 8, it was certainly affordable. It was so tasty that Maryati decided to order a Laksa Siam from the same food truck too!

Laksa Siam

Love Umbrella

As it started to drizzle, the staff placed umbrellas over each table. Coincidentally, it was also drizzling when we visited the Tapak Food Trucks. At that time, there were no tables available, so we ended up eating in our car. However, this time, thankfully, we had no trouble finding a table on which we could savour our hot bowls of laksa noodles.

Freedom Of Choice

What I enjoy most about this kind of food truck dining is the freedom to come as you are without any need for formalities, and to be able to choose from a wide range of different cooking styles of the West and East.

Furthermore, the clean and spacious surroundings, and affordability of food truck eateries will always attract patrons who want tasty food at their convenience and budget.

You may be interested in Honey, I Have Shrunk page for more food sharing recommendations.

Drop me a line if you have any recommendations on good eating establishments.

🏃 Running Event | Pahang International Marathon 2017 (PIM 2017)
Date | 12th March 2017, Sunday

Flag Off Time | 3:00am – 42 KM, 5:00am – 21 KM, 6:00am – 10 KM, 6:20am – 5 KM, 6:40am

⏳FM Cut-Off Time | 7 Hours

Venue | 🌳Taman Gelora, Kuantan, Pahang

Total Participants | 4,000 (FM=500)

Event Organiser | Monkey Theory

Editor’s Note

I was excited to join this new marathon event because ;

I wanted to support the first ever Full Marathon in Kuantan🌊

I wanted to see how the Event Organiser, Monkey Theory, coped with the difficult transition from handling the previous Annual Kuantan Half Marathon to a full-fledged FM event

I was invited to run as the 7-hour Pacer/Sweeper

It was my first FM in 2017

Making History
I was pleasantly surprised to see as many as 500 runners taking part in the 42km Category, and many of them had traveled from outstation and Kuala Lumpur.
Due to the central location of Kuantan, there was a good mix of runners from the North, South, the East Coast, and even from Singapore.

Dennis (far left) & John (far right)

🇰🇪 There were also a handful of Kenyan Marathoners who comfortably secured the top spots under the International Category.

🌖 Early Start
The 3am FM flag-off proved a good decision because it meant less cars on the road to bother the runners, and it reduced the heat exposure for the slower runners.

🌞 Bright Future
I was impressed by the overall management of this inaugural event, and in particular, the welfare of the runners, before, during and after the race were well taken care. This good start to Pahang International Marathon augurs well for its next installment.

The number of quality Full Marathons in Malaysia is too few, and although, every year there are new marathons emerging, only a few can survive beyond the crucial 1st 3 years. Nevertheless, with continued support from the Pahang State Government, the Local Authorities and Event Sponsors, coupled with putting the interest of the runners first, I don’t see any reason why we cannot see PIM developing into a reputable marathon which can annually attract many local and international runners.

👟💨The Tailenders

Henna (in red) was determined to complete her first FM

Running as the 7-hour Pacer, I met many Full Marathon Debutantes. In Kuantan, I met a few FM Maidens who did well to beat the cut-off time. Only 11 Runners missed the cut-off time. There were not many Non-Finishers or DNF which was partly due to the flat course and the less-heaty early start. For those who DNF, it was mostly caused by muscle cramps.

Congratulations to Mohd Nazri who was the fastest in the Men’s Open with a time of 2’47″💨🏃

After having visited the race site and having chatted with Race Director, David Tully, I can safely say that this could well be the best Spartan Race in Malaysia because for the first time, the race venue is surrounded by Mother Nature in one of Selangor’s beautiful greenery of Semenyih where there will be no less than 4 water crossings, some trees providing cooling shade from the expected hot sun, and a new water-based obstacle.

Moreover, this event will include the launching of the NEW & EXCLUSIVE Trifecta Club where all Trifecta Finishers will be given a special pin in order to gain access to a special area opened ONLY to Trifecta Finishers.

On cue, you can expect a tough physical challenge with lots of mud and sweat. As they say, Pain Is Weakness Leaving Your Body 💪🚶

To get you in the mood and perhaps, for the newbies to calm your nerves, here are some of my Personal Tips on how to ‘Race Like A Boss’! 😎

There will be a total of 20+ Obstacles which are scattered over an 8 kilometre route. To wet your appetite, I have video taped and previewed FIVE of the expected obstacles below…

🏃🏊NEW SPARTAN RACE COURSE!

EXCLUSIVE FIRST PEEK at Spartan Race Malaysia’s Brand New Obstacle, and Better Still Score Hot Tips🔥How To Beat It👊

💪SPARTAN RACE TIPS

🏊 The newly introduced Swim obstacle will strike fear in the heart of Spartans who are afraid of open water. However, there is no need to panic because ONLY those Spartans who are in the Elite or Competitive Category are given the OPTION to swim the 60m length.

If these Elites & Competitive Spartans decide to swim, then they will need to utilise the WIDER swimming lane on the far left (refer to VIDEO).

For the majority who are in the Open Category, they MUST wear a LIFEJACKET first in order to pull themselves along using the ropes of any of the 3 NARROWER lanes.

To Complete It SWIFTLY & SAFELY, Remember These Pointers :-

If you are not in the earlier Elite & Competitive Categories, you must wear the lifejacket provided, and don’t enter the wide lane which is reserved for Swimmers Only.

For the Elite & Competitive Spartans, don’t shove, hit or kick other swimmers, and stay inside the far right lane.

Watch-out for a high step just before exiting the water.

There will be race marshals in kayaks monitoring the Participants. If you are in distress, stay calm and call for the nearest marshal by waving your arm in the air. 🙌

Don’t be intimidated by the 60m distance because the water is not deep with maximum depth of only 4-5 feet only.

⤵⤴➡The O.ver U.nder T.hrough (OUT) obstacles are the first and easiest ones which are designed to get your blood flowing before tackling the tougher obstacles ahead.

To Complete It SWIFTLY & SAFELY, Remember These Pointers :-

For Over, make sure you get a good run-up before throwing yourself over it.

For the Under, you can crawl or roll under it

For the Through, grab hold the top frame with both hands, before jumping or pulling yourself through it.

✔ The A Frame Cargo obstacle requires good hands & legs coordination.

To Complete It SWIFTLY & SAFELY, Remember These Pointers :-

Always keep one hand on the net.

Don’t look all the way down.

Climb it as you would a ladder.

Always lean your bodyweight forward towards the netting.

Unless you have exceptionally long legs or on the way down, you should not climb more than one rung at time.

On race day, your hands will be wet and slippery, so you can wear gloves for better grip or grip the netting with both hands.

Before starting your climb, choose a line with the least number of participants for a smoother line.

The hardest part is to get yourself over the peak: As you can see from the video, when I reach the top, I move up & over sideways while reaching my one arm and one leg on the other side first.

✔ The River Crossing obstacle looks simple enough, but watch-out for the strong current and soft mud bottom.

To Complete It SWIFTLY & SAFELY, Remember These Pointers :-

Grab the rope before you descend the embankment.

Don’t jump in but step down into the water.

If the water current is too strong for you, don’t worry because there is a net downstream, off-camera, to catch you!

🐒 The Multi Rig obstacle is the one that most are dreading for very good reason, and where the BURPEES will be heavily dished out! Remember, Spartans never backs down from a challenge 👊

To Complete It SWIFTLY & SAFELY, Remember These Pointers :-

Wipe your hands dry before taking this on👋

As soon as one hand grabs the ring, quickly grab it with the other hand too.

Always keep a good swinging momentum throughout the whole obstacle.

The hardest part is transitioning from the fourth ring to the HIGHER (FURTHER) 5⃣th ring. You will need an extra wide swing and jump upwards to reach that devilish 5th ring!

Kid Sized ‘A’ Frame Cargo

Spartan Kids form an important part of the Spartan Race Family, and I can envision them having a whale of a time charging through the mini 800m obstacle course which is like a miniature version of the regular one. The elder kids will need to complete 2 loops instead of one.

Editor’s Note

Under the highly capable direction of Race Director, Mr. S.P. Wong, the annual Dragon Back Run in Meru is Pacers Sports showpiece event. It draws a loyal following because it provides a quality Running experience for the Participants.

With the surge in many Running Events which are too focused on making profits, promoting commercial brands and putting the Runners interest only in second place, it is easy to lose touch with the basic joys of running events – minus the bells and whistles.

So, I decided to join this event to support such rare events which form part of our Running Subculture, and at the same time, to rekindle my Running Soul.

Ready! Steady! Bang!

I arrived on the scene just in time to witness the fireworks being launched in the morning darkness, and I quickly joined the 23 km runners embark on our epic run.

At the start, I ran with the rear guard along Jalan Paip which gives me the chance to warm-up my legs first, and we even got the Race Director urging us onwards from inside the safety car.

Slippery Dragon

When we entered Persiaran Mokhtar Dahari, the rhythmic sounds of raindrops interrupted the stillness of predawn.

Cutting through the sheets of rain, we ran up and down the elongated rolling hills all the way to the end before turning left into Jalan Bukit Cerakah. By this time, the rain had stopped and daylight appeared,as I switched on my AfterShokz headphones to psych myself up for the upcoming series of steep hills ahead🎵

Musical Dragon

I had been constantly monitoring my heart rate throughout the race, and I decided that keeping my heart beat somewhere around 160 BPM was probably my best option to face the killer hills under my current fitness condition.

The later it got, the more thankful I was for the previous rainy spell because my body temperature kept cool and there was no crazy heat to further drain my energy.

Mission Accomplished

Although my overall pace was slow, I enjoyed the distance, the route, the cardio workout and most importantly, the whole experience reminded me, why I love Running in the first place, and that is the freedom to be myself and pursue my own dreams. It’s too easy to get caught up in all the commercial hype and soon forget about the pure pleasures of Running. Indeed, this kind of genuine Runner’s Running Event can keep me in touch with my Running roots, and that’s a huge plus in my books.

Breakfast Is Served

Since I only eaten half a red dragon fruit and coffee before leaving my house 5 hours earlier, I was understandably famished after the race. Luckily, there was plenty of food and drinks provided in the school canteen, and I wolved down slices of watermelon, 2 packets of nasi lemak and countless sweet snacks like there was tomorrow!

💓 My Event Highlights

I can fully recommend this Dragon Back Run to any runner for the following reasons :-

FIRST VISIT

In search of supper, Maryati and I wandered to Kuala Lumpur where we opted for some Street Dining experience à la Food Truck Park.

Despite the drizzle, there were punters queuing for freshly hot meals at the many food trucks available.

It took us a while to decide what to order because there were so many variety of cooking styles and eye-catching menus on display.

Finally, we opted for some Vietnamese Spring Rolls and the Mandi Lamb Rice Wrap. Check-out the culinary video clips below!

Since the open air tables with umbrellas were fully occupied, we ate our food in our nearby parked car. Our hot meals were PREPARED in Food Trucks & GOBBLED UP in a stationary car which gives new meaning to the phrase, ‘Meals On Wheels’!

📹What To Eat?!

CLEAN & CHIC

The menu prices are not as cheap as our regular roadside food stalls, but the food truck mobile kitchen were hygienic, plus you can sample many different specialty foods if you are tired of the usual local “goreng-goreng” variety.
