RYSE TO THE CHALLENGE by Happy Runner
Editor’s Note
It is refreshing to witness the introduction of a new homegrown Obstacle Course Race (OCR) event in Malaysia, at a time when existing foreign OCRs such as Spartan Malaysia & Viper Challenge have become over-commercialized and too predictable.
What attracted me about the recently launched, RYSE GLADIATORS CHALLENGE 2018, was the Founder Maria Wong’s noble VISION of creating a local OCR which strive to give youngsters and newbies a systematic platform which can teach Youngsters about Grit, Determination and Teamwork, while keeping FIT and HEALTHY.
Being a Fitness Coach, myself, I have had many first-hand experiences of witnessing the unmistakable positive impact of Sports and Exercise on People of all walks of life, and the Community. Therefore, I was happy to cover this outdoor event, and share my experience accordingly with the Event Organiser RYSE and the OCR Fans out there….
THRILLING THREESOME
For its debut, RYSE has enlisted 3 premium private universities – INTI, Nottinghamshire & Sunway – to challenge each other for the right to be the first ever Champion of Malaysia’s First Intervarsity Obstacle Circuit Race à la RYSE GLADIATORS CHALLENGE (RGC) 2018. Each participating University will conduct their own OCR heats under the close supervision of Organiser & Referee RYSE whereby the Fastest Times for the Top 3 Individual & Team Relay categories will automatically qualify and represent their respective university in the Grand Final to be held at University of Nottinghamshire on 21st April 2018.
PASSIVE TO ACTIVE LIFESTYLE
Although, RGC 2018 is only open to the students from these 3 Universities, the Public will be allowed to participate in the afternoon of the Finals. Moreover, RYSE Director Maria Wong is inviting all eligible students, not just the fit ones, to try their new and exciting obstacle course. Afterall, apart from the competition aspect, the underlying objective of RGC 2018 is to promote healthy outdoor activities among the students whose lives are typically engaged in studying to pass exams, and many of these students lead a sedentary lifestyle, spending long hours staring at computer screens.
Therefore, being able to engage in more healthy activities, such as RGC 2018, the students can learn that achieving a good Work-Play-Rest balance is as important as scoring top academic marks. In fact, scientific research has shown that regular exercise can help people’s minds to FOCUS BETTER!
BREAKING NEW GROUND
Unlike public and state universities, the exclusive private Universities tend to be more elusive, and they don’t interact with each other, preferring to keep to themselves. According to RYSE Director, Maria Wong, in the beginning, the private universities were extremely hesitant and skeptical of the intention of the untested RGC 2018. Only after countless meetings with several resistant private universities, RGC 2018 organising committee was able to persuade INTI, Nottinghamshire and Sunway Universities to collaborate and as they say…the rest is history.

My First RYSE GLADIATORS Trial
Many thanks to Maria Wong for giving me a Guest Invitation to INTI University for a try-out, and thanks to the helpful RYSE CREW who made me feel welcomed, even though, I was a senior veteran!
Inspired by watching American Ninjas on TV, I blazed through the 11-obstacle course in a respectable time of 4 minutes and 18 seconds. However, the Zig-Zag Wall costed me an additional 60 seconds penalty as my feet had illegally touched the ground. Nevertheless, I was feeling young again as I climbed, jumped, and bobbed through the obstacle circuit, and after crossing the finish line, I felt a sense of exhilaration.

Course Assessment
Frankly, I loved this new obstacle circuit because it really tests and challenges your overall fitness level. Don’t let the short obstacle course fool you, it takes not only STRENGTH and SKILLS to complete it, but you also need good BALANCE and SPEED for a top finishing time.
Safety First
For safety, the Participants must meet a minimum level of fitness to take on this course, and without any training beforehand, the risk of injury is significantly increased. No matter your age, if you have any doubts about your fitness capacity, please consult a doctor before signing up.
Fun & Fitness
Working out solo in a gym can get tedious and uninspiring at times, therefore, I salute Maria, RYSE and the official participating Universities for giving their students and the public an opportunity to make exercise fun and inspirational….
