Lunar New Year Run 2018 – Review by Happy Runner
Editor’s Note
Every year, this Family Fun Run is a JOYFUL pre-celebration of the Chinese New Year, and therefore, the AUSPICIOUS colour red and the ZODIAC SIGN for 2018, the Dog, were the main Event theme colours and mascot respectively.
There was a real festival spirit in the air as 5,000 runners and families with children, dressed in vibrant red colours, descended upon the Setia Alam Urban Park for a chillout Sunday run.
The situation reminded me of how fortunate Malaysians are to be able to live in a harmonious multi-ethnic country where we respect and appreciate our different backgrounds. In fact, festivals themed runs LIKE THIS ONE, are a great opportunity to participate in each other’s culture and tradition, and in turn, promote deeper understanding and better relationships between the various races, just like our hugely popular Open House tradition during Hari Raya, CNY and Deepavali.
In the ensuing photos, you will see mostly Chinese runners; and I couldn’t recall seeing any Malays (except for the RELA VOLUNTEERS!), but I did see a couple of Indian runners during the run. Nevertheless, as an independent running blogger, it’s important for me to cover all kinds of running events which reflects the full “colour” spectrum of our society without restricting myself only to those events which favour my personal beliefs – JUST as long as I am invited and welcomed there.

FEELING SAFE & SECURE
I marked this family-orientated fun run an “A” grade because it was very well planned, neatly organised and efficiently executed under the experienced leadership of Race Director S.P. Wong, Pacers Sport.
In particular, I give HIGH SCORES to the Event Crew for ensuring a near perfect ROAD SAFETY condition for all the runners, from the fastest to slowest :-
- Selecting a safe and running-friendly route,
- Utilising traffic cones effectively
- Engaging alert road marshals at every main junction,
- Employing a mobile team of cyclists to constantly monitor the runners along the whole route,
- Hiring 3 Ambulances 🚑
